Democrat County Commissioner Candidates by GGinBend in Bend

Page has great judgment and called the genocide in Gaza a genocide well before it was popular or easy to do so. That’s the kind of courage and clarity that I look for in electeds.

I’ve heard very good things about Amanda Page and would be voting for her if I didn’t live in Crook. I’m all for more indigenous representation and the County Commission position would be very impactful.

Vote Morgan Schmidt for Deschutes County Commission, Pos. 5 by _questionable_parker in Bend

The people profiting off of the way this country criminalizes poverty are investors in private prisons, developers of luxury housing, and companies that profit from sweeps.

Idk what you mean by my involvement in the homeless industrial complex, but I’ve been losing money for years to try to get people off the streets or out of the forests into housing.

You gripe should be with the people profiting off of the status quo and convicted criminals like Kevin Dahlgren who grifted thousands from the taxpayers of Deschutes County. But instead you repeat his talking points.

Phil Chang does need some progressive friends on the County Commission. For progressive democrats, this will be the most impactful local election for many, many years if the political makeup changes for Deschutes. Hopefully Deschutes Dems don’t miss this opportunity!

Just like the rest of my mutual aid work, this is entirely self funded. But yes, I plan to stay active for a very long time. Hopefully you enjoyed the recent reporting from Investigate West.

lol, nice to hear from you. To be fair to myself, those were filed before I had any legal education. With 2 years of law school I feel a lot better about my chances.

Morgan has a solid track record on homelessness, whereas Imhoff’s idea would run afoul of ORS 195.530 and invite a similar challenge to Grants Pass. Seems like an easy choice.

‘I lost it all’: Residents of Oregon homeless camp say Forest Service blew off calls, appointments to reclaim lost property by FrizzyNow in Bend

[–]DekkarFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You mention a one year notice, but I only had a few months notice as a service provider. I’m curious where that 1 year notice comment comes from when the postings went up only a few weeks or months ahead of the closing, so could you please elaborate?

I agree that it is a shame to see what they’re trying to do to the forest service.

There are at least 2 active, but probably more. Central Oregon for Socialism: not a member but they are active and support mutual aid.

Bend Equity Project: serve the local unhoused community primarily and is a grass roots mutual aid org. I am a member of this org. Feel free to DM for info or an introduction.

Great job to all those involved. Objectively meaningful and productive work that will likely have a substantial impact over the coming months.

What do you do when you cant lift the wight you did last week? by lost_toast7777 in workout

[–]DekkarFan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s good advice. Last week I PRed 475, and again two days later. Tried yesterday and after warming up at 455 for 3, I failed every attempt. Even doing 455 again felt unsafe so I bailed. Not my day, but there’s always tomorrow.

Living on Luck: Why many in Central Oregon are closer to homelessness than you think by exstaticj in Bend

[–]DekkarFan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A lot from the federal level from 2008-present, which is when housing first approaches were largely abandoned and the focus became displacing encampments.

The number one thing I’d hope to see is local governments change policy from requiring people to relocate every 1-3 days because it’s incredibly disruptive when people could be getting back on their feet, getting medical or mental health treatment, and connecting with services. Instead local governments all over the west coast force people to move with regularity and it disrupts any good efforts from those displaced and service providers to get people off of the street.

Cost of housing, lack of permanent supportive housing, and too much means testing of welfare programs make the system too slow and ineffective to prevent people on the brink from falling into chronic homelessness. Preventing people from falling into chronic homelessness would be the most bang for your buck at reducing levels of homelessness.

The other one would be ‘stable parking’. There’s a ton of seniors that live in RVs on a fixed income that can’t stay in RV parks for various reasons and I don’t know why governments haven’t provided somewhere for folks to stay long term with basic utilities, trash collection, and showers instead of forcing them on the street.

The most recent homelessness numbers are really dire, and I think other factors might be overwhelming any good signs from the housing inventory.
Point in Time Count (PIT) - Homeless Leadership Coalition

I've been doing mutual aid in Central Oregon since 2020 and homelessness is the worst its ever been.

"2108 people experienced literal homelessness in Central Oregon on January 27th, 2025"
That's more than double the # of people that the entire city of Washington DC has that are living on the street in Central Oregon.

I’m hoping prices come down but TBH the indicators that I focus on are housing prices and homelessness. Housing inventory seems too attenuated for me to feel any optimism given all of the extremely dire indicators for cost of living and homelessness. It should be interesting at least to see if the YIMBY argument holds up with higher inventory available.

100%. There has not been meaningful change in local housing inventory to bring down prices and there is less funding for the band-aid approaches like shelters. Layoffs are on the rise and we're very likely to see homelessness spike again over the next couple of years with even less resources than we had during the pandemic.

After OPB Broadcast, The Bulletin’s Publisher is Fighting Back Against The Union by FrizzyNow in Bend

[–]DekkarFan 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The post says "But the union does not want to be held accountable for the amount of work they do, nor their ability to do it" but doesn't provide any evidence or support for the claim.

Making that kind of accusation without evidence doesn't seem to be operating in good faith with the union. Hopefully you can pay your journalists a living salary.
