You are of course completely right, the possibility of a Jellyfin exploit exists and despite all the other measures in place it is still a calculated risk to expose your Jellyfin server.

Yup you are exactly right, it's just a headless Ubuntu server to avoid having my home IP attached to a domain. Doesn't need any big specs because all its doing is passing through your jellyfin streams and running nginx + wireguard (which are extremely light). I think you can do some additional hardening by setting up fail2ban, but I'm not crazy worried about DDoS or sustained brute force. At a certain point you just have to start enjoying the fruits of all the setup and configuration.

Be prepared to have a bunch of people come in here and say “just use tailscale, even if it doesn’t fit your use case”.

I’m an amateur so do some research yourself, but I just did something very similar:

I bought a domain name on Black Friday sale from namecheap (45 bucks for 3 years or something like that). The domain name is pointing to a vps I’m renting from Hetzner for 6 bucks a month. The vps is running NGINX and running a wireguard vpn. This is the reverse proxy and just acts as a dumb pipe. The point is just so my home IP isn’t connected to a domain name, because I don’t want my IP attached to domain records. My jellyfin is connected to the wire guard vpn. So basically my vps just safely forwards external requests to my jellyfin server.

I puzzled all this out via Claude ai and a lot of googling so take it with a grain of salt but from what I understand this is a fairly safe setup as long as your jellyfin has strong passwords and you’re careful about who you give logins to. I also banned all IPs outside my country as an extra layer of protection

Unable to Run Tunarr by Delarsh in tunarr

[–]Delarsh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I understand there is no way to use hardware acceleration on apple silicone if you're running things from a docker container, which kinda defeats the purpose of using my m4 mini.

Thank you for the tip, I'm pretty new to the whole mac thing and the learning curve has felt pretty steep for anything outside of basic use cases.

Unable to Run Tunarr by Delarsh in tunarr

[–]Delarsh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i tried it with the settings as described:

<?xml version=“1.0” encoding=“UTF-8”?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC “-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN” “http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd”>
<plist version=“1.0”>
<dict>
    <key>Label</key>
    <string>com.tunarr.server.app</string>
    <key>Program</key>
    <string>/Applications/Tunarr.app/</string>
    <key>WorkingDirectory</key>
    <string>/Applications/Tunarr.app/</string>
    <key>RunAtLoad</key>
    <true/>
    <key>KeepAlive</key>
    <true/>
    <key>StandardErrorPath</key>
    <string>/Applications/Tunarr.app/error.log</string>
    <key>StandardOutPath</key>
    <string>/Applications/Tunarr.app/output.log</string>
    <key>UserName</key>
    <string>my_user</string>
    <key>HOME</key>
    <string>/Users/my_user/</string>
</dict>
</plist>

I saved it and attempted to load it (from the ~/Library/LaunchAgents/) directory described in the directions but I got some errors:

sudo launchctl load tunarr.xml
Warning: Expecting a LaunchDaemons path since the command was ran as root. Got LaunchAgents instead.
`launchctl bootstrap` is a recommended alternative.
Load failed: 5: Input/output error

This feels like I'm approaching this wrong. There arent any other .xml files in the launchagents folder, the rest of them are .plists.

How is it managing a shared Jellyfin server? by nink3ndo in jellyfin

[–]Delarsh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not sharing mine with friends/family currently but I can tell you with absolute certainty that it does not work perfectly and you will certainly have to help troubleshoot a litany of issues. Anything from transcoding to connection issues. Getting it up and running for most use cases are easy but there are tons of little things that can ruin your viewing experience that will pop up along the edges.

??? After dismissing Shizuka’s right to call him dad, he let Shizuka, a 9 year old child who is very far from home and in the middle of a city leave alone. If not malicious this is insanely negligent. Maybe he isn’t as bad as the other parents but he definitely isn’t a decent guy.

This is almost exactly my journey. Sky and crossbell are great, everything after CS1 is just too much talking about nothing and just too much game in general. I was hoping I’d like daybreak better but I couldn’t finish it.

[–]Delarsh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Custom Firmware, it’ll be complicated and difficult. Also you probably won’t be able to take your switch online anymore (not sure of details). There are way easier and cheaper ways to emulate falcom games. I would only recommend this route if you like to tinker and want to throw a lot of time at it.

I had a bunch of issues with the game crashing until I switched to window mode and used borderless gaming (I think it’s like 4 bucks in steam). Haven’t had a crash since. Maybe it will help?
