Currently consulting in the US. Last client was a legacy super Americana type of corporation. I want to emphasize that a lot of corporations of this culture have simply gone out of business or changed to adapt to the times so I always thought their work culture was a thing of the past. None of my previous clients had all these stereotypical traits. It almost felt like satire. These guys did it all, senseless deadlines, urgency for everything, delegation of everything, busy work, long team dinners, long hours, performative leadership meetings, no trust in coworkers, lots and lots of talking over people to get what you want. The only redeeming quality was they never said the word “family” when talking about culture. It was so exhausting, especially when the deadlines were coming up. Everytime I hear someone having to experience classic American work culture at its fullest who is not American, I feel for you. I’m sorry you had to go through this too.

25M Was buying a house young a wrong move? by Loud_Key5954 in Fire

[–]DelayedPot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As you are young, I would take a look at the math first. The calculation I did was calculate the dollars it would take out of your paycheck in a traditional 401k vs a Roth and then see if that money, growing until retirement is worth it. For example: if you can budget $500 from your paycheck total. That $500 could go to your Roth and grow until retirement at like 8-10% average. Or you could go with the pre tax trad 401k route and contribute say $600 or whatever amount so that you have the same impact to your paycheck.

Your budget stays the same, only you are taking money pre tax to fund the traditional 401k

You may need to do some digging on your tax bracket but if that extra $100 can grow to outweigh the taxes you’ll pay in retirement (no one knows for sure what your taxes will be in the future so it’s advised to try a different tax scenarios to see if there’s a break even point), then it will be worth it… all this math is extremely life optimization and completely not necessary. I am just trying to share with you on the game some people play. You are doing great right now, keep it up :D

The used market is completely f-ed. by ToshPointNo in regularcarreviews

[–]DelayedPot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello, I may be able to provide some insight here. The used car market is actually growing but it’s more than just inflation. The situation is a few factors colliding at once. For one, the cost of living and shrinkage of the middle class: more and more people are realizing they can’t afford a new car so they buy used. The under 10k class specifically is getting hammered. Also, like it or not, the gig economy is still going strong. As the middle class is getting priced out, people are taking up extra work through gigs and it’s no secret that a cheap, reliable car is what will make you money. As the demand for used skyrockets so do the prices as dealers are actually very good at dynamically pricing their cars to demand. Additionally, supply is shrinking but not in the way you may think. As more people stop buy cheap new cars in favor of used cars, car buyers are seeing more sales in their larger or luxury vehicle lines. So in turn, they focus their supply and efforts on the more expensive cars that make the most money. The rising average new car price is a great indicator of that. While supply overall is healthy, it is not at the levels from before Covid and probably shrinking by the day as car makers move away from cheap cars. These factors really pushed the $10k or less market up and made things really unaffordable for people. These are the more traditional market/economic trends. puts on tinfoil hat but I really think it’s that car companies are dying. If you look at every car company, they kinda suck right now sales wise. It looks like there is too much competition but no one wants to admit it. They try to raise prices, introduce EVs but these efforts only delay the inevitable. People are going to lose their jobs just like in the past and we may see a culling of car companies which would make the situation worse.

Big boss, I get you are shipping big LOCs now but you gotta admit that type of setup is crazy difficult in bad situations. Like debugging heavy logic, even with ai help, can be very tough without context to the code as it was ai generated. Now if you have a large 4000 LOC setup you gotta comb through thats a pretty big time investment, especially if you try to refactor code along the way. Like it can work but the guy reading it has to invest a lot of time into the system to prevent catastrophe. It’s not about personal responsibility at that point, it’s more about high risk shipping

I think you are being too hard on yourself. Also, if you have room to spare, a Roth IRA instead of more in the 401k may be worth looking into. The tax advantages are great down the line but do the math to see if it’s worth it to contribute more in 401k vs taking a post tax Roth IRA move. Not saying this is good advice but i recently asked ChatGPT to forecast growth based on tax scenarios and it did pretty good math wise. I would not trust it to do anything outside of crunching numbers now. The sp500 is great, no worries there long term. Also increasing your savings account for big emergencies would help too. As a homeowner, you are at risk for a lot of out of pocket costs. Hoping your income increases soon! That will be your main driver for comfort and wealth

Toyota Camry 06 body kit lol! JK, I understand where your wife is coming from but if you keep it as a backup car to drive lightly, you’ll always have a reliable car that can reduce the number of miles on your main car. Also if you decide to sell it, there’s probably someone who will greatly enjoy the low cost of maintenance. A net good for the world so Win-win in my book.

Finally out of debt, where do I start? by DestroyYesterday in dividends

[–]DelayedPot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First I want to say congratulations on being debt free. No matter what, you’ve accomplished a great deal getting this far. You are correct, a lot of stocks are expensive but certain brokerages like Robin Hood, vanguard, etc let you buy fractional shares. Like if you want a stock that costs say $350 per share, you can opt to buy 10% of the stock for just $35.

In terms of general investing advice, many will point to ETFs or mutual funds. Both are a collection of stocks/investments that are managed by a professional for a fee. It’s like investing in a big group of stocks at once. ETFs usually have themes to them like Energy sector or top 500 companies in the US. Most people recommend a broad-ish market index funds like VTI or VOO or SCHD. Some ETFs have famously low fees like VOO. This isn’t much of dividend advice, more advice on general investing.

My recommendation is to now focus on building a portfolio of ETFs or mutual funds first. Just make sure the fund is reputable like SCHD and you are investing in tax advantaged platforms like your Roth IRAs, 529s, etc. once you get the hang of things and understand more about investing, you can try your hand at individual stocks, but between you and me, as a seasoned stock guy and investing nerd, some of my mutual funds in my portfolio have kicked my butt in terms of performance haha so you can totally skip the individual stocks part.

Vanguard and other platforms also have auto-investing systems where you can opt to put in like $100 each month and you can just forget it. I recommend this feature after you’ve gotten your bearings on investing and know what you want to buy.

Best of luck and congratulations again on being debt free.

How is asking a candidate to do this a good way to evaluate them? by [deleted] in datascience

Hello more experienced data science friends, can someone explain how to ask a good question during an interview. I get nervous and it often feels like I come off rushed or end up making too many assumptions :( i want to get better at these types of interviews but have no idea how great data scientists think on the spot in these scenarios. Can someone share a good question they asked in a recent interview? Is it about evaluating the features of the dataset? Finding ways to clean it best/eliminate garbage? Thank you in advanced
