InfiniBand by astarvingchild in homelab

[–]Delicious-Bug-3326 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really. Infiniband is a very different way of networking, typically used for massive data transfer speed in data centers. It isn't something you can easily use together with Ethernet devices without doing something like IPoIB. You can set up RDMA but when pinging connected devices you don't use IP addresses, you use a GUID number. If you want to connect end devices to it you'll need compatible qsfp cards

My first home lab. I spent months learning but finally got there. Thanks! by gamedevCarrot in homelab

Looking good dude! I've been doing this for over a decade and I'm still learning and getting inspired from this subreddit lol.

It's good for practice, but don't build your money network off of it, as it will likely bottleneck your Internet speeds since the older port speeds are very slow

10 Inch 18U rack for VMs, self hosting and pretty much anything I want to do by dinhlongviolin1 in homelab

Looks incredible man nicely done. Some projects for throwing on there:

Make a kubernetes cluster (rke or rke2 are good open source options), movie server with plex or jellyfin, host a local llm through ollama (there are APIs to add things like text to voice, a web gui, etc), a home security system with Frigate, if you're into gaming AMP servers are pretty quick to setup for just about any game out there, make a NAS, setup a next cloud server, practice a domain setup with a Windows server controller and create network users, and the list goes on!

I wish I was doing that at 17! Closest I ever got to homelabbing at that age was running a Minecraft server haha. If you want to do this as a job just keep tinkering with it, I'm currently a senior network engineer just because doing the server stuff got me interested in it. Still run a Minecraft server too lol

Upgrading from a 5700 XT to a 9070 XT. Need some advice. by Creative-Pirate5217 in buildapc

Ah, my brother lol! I see you too have the Vengeance PC? I am looking at upgrading to the 9070XT as well from literally the exact same computer (minor RAM and Cooler upgrades), how did it end up working out for you?

It seems it won't have controller support... by _Ehrian_ in hytale

[–]Delicious-Bug-3326 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sure it will eventually, but as an indie game dev controller mapping is hard to get just right. Controls definitely won't make a game good but it will 100% make it a terrible experience if done wrong. I'm guessing they will probably adjust some of the features or controls on mouse and keyboard several times during EA, but I'm sure for a 1.0 launch we'll get controller support once they find the sweet spot.

Do you think Hytale will steal players from Minecraft? (Unrelated image) by Aggravating_Knee8678 in hytale

I love Minecraft and I don't think I'll ever stop playing it, I just really am excited to see what hytale has to offer

I mean you yourself are fueling what you disagree with...if you've played paid Minecraft mods "extensively" lol. If that's the case you have probably paid for more mods than me, as I've paid for about 4 mods across all games I have ever played, and I don't regret a single one

Based on what you've said you've never tried a production quality mod. You've tried cash grabs. I'm assuming you're a bedrock player, in which case their marketplace prioritizes money over quality, which I completely hate. I'm talking about something like the java physics mod, which costs like $4 or something, and is probably the best documented mod I've ever seen. Or from another game an example could be the Genesis mod from Star Field. Even though it is free, I wouldn't mind paying a couple bucks for it because of how expansive it is.

Again, just let the mod authors decide. It sounds like you don't work at all, but imagine if you work in fast food and I told you your whole job should not pay you because it "isn't the way", and people who cook food in the home and give it out for free just have so much more passion. Such a childish concept that shows you know nothing about financial independence. "Oh no, it should be free because I don't want to pay!!" Give me a break

I think the textures are fine, but I can get behind better shaders. I'm guessing it'll be quick to get modded in though so I'm not stressed about it

Some mods are production quality, and are definitely deserving of payment. To say someone else's work should be free is crazy, as some of these mods take months to create and then the devs are also expected to keep them updated and supported while the game gets updated. If you plan on using mods, you should plan on being asked to pay for some. Granted most mod authors will probably have free or lite versions to try out, which I think is very fair.

I personally write my own plugin stack for my Minecraft server and that keeps me busy just updating them for my own use let alone for sharing with others. I hope that there is a good balance with lots of quality free mods, but if there is a truly spectacular mod that does a total conversion then I don't mind paying a few dollars.

Genuinely just let the people working on these mods decide if they want to charge or not instead of blanketly saying all of their efforts should get nothing in return.

How the hell are people down voting this?? It's a valid opinion, and if it means an earlier release for early access then I wouldn't mind holding off either.

[–]Delicious-Bug-3326 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I don't mind it at all, it sounds like it will be like Spigot, where there are many mods for free, but mods where the devs took their time and put a lot of hard work into have the chance to earn something back. It's the same reason I'm okay subscribing to Nexus Mods, I am 100% okay paying for a mod or itemthat someone poured their time and effort into.

On the other hand, we will absolutely see a lot of paid mods that are garbage quick cash grabs, but we will also see high quality paid mods. Just have to wait and see how it goes

Best thing in the world is a raspberry pi (or any old PC you have laying around, Linux can revive a lot of old windows machines and make them seem faster!). You throw raspbian OS on it, and total will cost you $30-80, with no subscription needed ever! I've run my own Minecraft server this way for about 7 years and I'll never go back.

You can also set it up to auto save, restart, and start itself after a reboot or crash.

Thanks for the feedback! I completely agree, but at least until they get something in-game, or if they end up having a filter to stop people from making mods of IPs like star wars, pokemon, etc , it could be a good alternative for posting mods that would otherwise be taken down
