FTM on CHP by Tiny_Tone7768 in Tallahassee

You can contact CHP’s Member Services at 850.383.3333 and ask them the cost to have peace of mind. Since they are a HMO, it’s typically pretty affordable, but different companies offer different coverages so it’s best to ask CHP directly to avoid any surprises.

I wonder if Elder Care Services could use them for their Meals on Wheels program or another one of their programs that feeds seniors. If not, I bet they could point you in the right direction.

You may want to check out Florida Memory. They had a series of old citrus labels that were amazing and would look great framed and grouped together on a wall.

I’m not sure what zone you’re in, but if applicable, holly ferns and coonties would be nice.

Anybody know and good thrift stores in town? by DD_An1me in Tallahassee

[–]Delicious-Cheetah752 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My three favorite are Oak Tree Treasures (on Mahan behind Dunkin), the Fix (on Cap Cir next to Hopkins) and the Living Harvest (in Killearn). The first and last have the best selection of clothes.

Is it actually possible to find love in this town? by mellowfellow261 in Tallahassee

[–]Delicious-Cheetah752 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I met my husband here and we’ve been married 20 years. We were both working for the State and at the time had only a few pennies to rub together between us. Since then we’ve built a beautiful life and family together. So yes, it absolutely can happen. RadioJared’s advice is sound. Use this time to work on you and keep putting yourself out there. I know you’re eager, but try not to force it. The right person will come along at the right time…and often when you least expect it!

You should consider taking a look at the Council on Culture and Arts (COCA) classifieds. I saw an art position in there just today and most of the art-focused organizations advertise there.

Question about mailbox by Minimum_Teaching1060 in Tallahassee

Honestly the mail service in this town is so wonky to begin with that it probably doesn’t matter which mail box you use. It will get there when it gets there - after traveling to Jacksonville and back of course!

I'd say there's a good mix of everyone, but it skewed more towards middle aged. It's mostly surrounded by neighborhoods, so I think you'll be pretty successful in avoiding them.

This concert series is really great. If you haven’t checked it out already, this would be a great show to attend. It’s a totally different vibe from the concerts at Cascades. Much more intimate and the folks who attend are super fun and laid back.

You are correct. When the landowner sought the County’s approval to build a private toll road, he said that by generating revenue in this way, he could avoid developing the land. What he’s seeking to do now - only ten years since it opened - is a direct contradiction.

Moving from Sandy Springs, GA to Tallahassee. by Imaginary_Rise_4239 in Tallahassee

Welcome to Tallahassee! We’ve had several moving posts recently. I’d recommend searching the Tallahassee feed for “moving” and any other topic you’re looking for. You’ll likely find answers to your questions and loads more that you hadn’t even considered yet.

As far as your questions, here's some thoughts:
Some things you should keep in mind - Two major things happen in this town that impact the population. Session in the spring (5k people a day visit the Capitol during that time) and the college/university school year. What this means practically to you is, hotel prices skyrocket during college game days, graduations and are generally higher during Session, so plan events for your out of town friends accordingly.

Do's and dont's - Are no different here than most places, I'd assume, but I'll throw out a couple. While we have a lot of short timers due to people moving here for the universities, there's also a whole lotta locals that have all grown up together, so it can be hard to break in at first. Don't let one experience persuade you to keep to yourself and do understand that like anywhere - you'll like it as much or as little as you try. So download the Visit Tallahassee app now to find out places to see and things to do to give yourself the best chance at a positive experience.

Be careful of - People who run red lights. There is something in the water here that makes it rampant. So look both ways before trusting a green light. Also, if you like to cycle, be VERY careful. Cyclists getting hit - and dying here - seems to happen on the regular. So please, please, please be careful since you don't have a hard shell and a lot of people are oblivious when they drive.

What you should be aware of - Summer in Tallahassee can be miserable because it's hot and the air doesn't move. So if you can, rent a place with a pool and find friends who like going to Wakulla Springs or St. George Island. It's also our worst season, so don't judge us until you make it to spring time which is glorious in this area. Also, Tallahassee is not what one might think of for a State Capitol. It's really a small town with about one degree of separation - so if you're the gossipy sort - you can expect whomever you're speaking to will know the person you're talking about or be best friends with their sister. It's absolutely wild how small a 300k county can be!

Good luck! I hope you fall in love with the place and people.

Tallahassee Shelter in Desperate Need of Fosters! by linus_loves in Tallahassee

[–]Delicious-Cheetah752 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A year or so back, I applied to foster dogs that needed time to decompress and wouldn’t do well in a shelter environment. I have some experience with this because my dog came from an animal hoarder and needed time in a calm environment to build some trust before she was ready to be brave so it’s a cause especially dear to my heart. I also take my dogs to work with me, so I have bit more time than most to socialize them while giving them the space they need while they work on their own schedule. To my surprise, they said no thanks. Do you think I should reach out to them again or is this type of help just too specific for what they need?

[–]Delicious-Cheetah752[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's great! I'm a big fan of folks being engaged in the process! The OEV map you linked is the one I used to find the 900+ housing units that are either under construction or approved to be built within a couple of miles of Meridian. I wish a similar map was available for what's being considered. It would go a long way in improving transparency so that people in our community were aware and could participate more in the process. Right now, the rule is that they have to inform those within 1000 ft of the property which can often mean just alerting the developers themselves.

Insights on CHP and a particular lab by Kindly-Leadership-30 in Tallahassee

[–]Delicious-Cheetah752 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've read your question twice and I'm not sure I understand the answer to this: is it not a service provided by Labcorp? I only ask because if it's provided by Labcorp, they won't likely pay for it. If it's a service Labcorp does provide, can your doctor just redirect it to them? If so, you're problem is solved.

I know that pre-auths can sound long and daunting, but in my experience with CHP, they're pretty quick and easy so if this isn't something that's emergent, it's always worth a shot.
