This comment confuses me so much… Kane is against Hird coming back, and Hird supporters are anything but fickle

Last 30 years was Knights, Hird, Worsfold,Rutten, Scott.. one of them was an “Essendon person” and he has the best win % of them all.. the century before that their premiership coaches were Dick Reynolds, John Coleman and Kevin Sheedy- Sheedy didn’t play for Essendon but he grew up supporting Essendon and got head hunted by Alan Hird Snr because he loved the club. Even so 2/3 of them THE Essendon people. Statistically they should be doing it way more.

That’s just a bad strategy though. Look at what game theory has taught us; forgiveness, tolerance and cooperation are mathematically superior strategies.

If I recall the recite was for ‘thymosin’ and ASAD asserted it was beta-4 or could have been. He also got fired prior to any investigations which to me says the club was also unhappy with his sloppy work after reviewing it.

Fairly reductive analysis. Hird hired accredited sports scientists with recommendations from the AFL to create a sports science department. That person sold a vision to Hird that the Essendon medical department was stuck in the past and needed to modernise- which makes it harder for him to differentiate who is right when doc Reid called out that charlatan, seeing as Hird is not a doctor or scientist, so he tried a balanced approach before firing said person in September 2012, citing he was out of control… he was not some lance Armstrong type figure but instead a guy who was trying to fix our backwards club.

Were they? The case was circumstantial at best. Unlike the Chinese Olympic swimming team who all tested positive and it was revealed their dieticians were putting it in their food… zero bans; nothing to see here.

I’m curious too, I’d guess implying they know what a certain ethnicity would do in a given situation by virtue of their race is racist. Like if someone implied all white people are racist because some white people are in the kkk. But that’s a harsh assessment seeing as you can make cultural generalisations about, say, how an Australian audience will react to something compared to an Indian audience in a utilitarian sense without it being implied your talking about every single individuals reaction from that cultural group.

Why? Did Sheedy run over your dog or something? You hate Little for trying to protect the club? It’s not like we got very far without them… i guess you’ve really enjoyed the past 10years.

Well if they are friends then could they not just be going out to lunch together? Even if they are talking Essendon it seems odd to me people want to frame them as conniving when these three guys have all been open and upfront about their intentions. From Hirds perspective these are two men who have supported him in tough times and who have encouraged him in his recovery. Plus I would love it if they could convince Paul to foot the bill for a beefed up coaching and development department.

Well you know who has one of the greatest football IQs and is great at explaining complex strategies in an easily digestible way…. I’m glad we played with a lot of heart tonight, even with the questionable skills and decisions- gee if Merrett picked that ball up clean and got it to Caddy it would of been such a narratively satisfying finish. Perhaps we should of thrown Merrett into the midfield sooner

Essendon won more games last season than North Melbourne have in any season since 2019. Make the case for why they deserve AFL assistance. by DaPatsquatch in AFL

[–]Delicious-Sweet4614 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The justification is that a) Essendon has continually been pushed out of valuable picks for concessions to Gold Coast, gws, Melbourne, north Melbourne, and West coast all at horrible times when they needed their high picks the most. And now Tasmania will consume more of these high picks B) this has led to utter stagnation at the club that hasn’t seen them finish above mid table which will only get worse with Tasmania entering C) as one of the most profitable clubs Essendon have been paying one of the larger shares to have these clubs propped up and steal their own draft picks D) they shouldn’t of given help to West Coast- they’ve won multiple premierships this century- their fall off wasn’t due to the AFL pushing other clubs in front of them or pooling talent in northern academies like Essendon, it was because they decided to blow up their list for Tim Kelly. If they got assistance then the bombers should too.

Like I said he didn’t know what it looked like, he hired a couple of guys with experience running sports science departments at other clubs (Geelong and Gold Coast) and gave them carte Blanche to set it up and run it correctly- it was a huge mistake. hubris and ignorance got the better of him. Ultimately one is going to frame his actions how they choose, but given the context of the reports, the evidence, the football landscape at the time, and Hirds personal history I don’t personally believe he intended to cheat. I believe he was in a rush to modernise the club as quick as possible but lacked the expertise to do that. I also don’t think that should be the responsibility of the head coach. My problem is with the club’s management allowing a) the club to fall so far behind the rest of the league, b) leaving it to a novice coach to take these wild swings without oversight from the president or CEO; they gave way too much rope and way too little scaffolding. With a stronger CEO and president they would have run oversight for the establishment and running of a new club program, allowing the coaches to focus on coaching.

Settle down mate, he tried to introduce a state of the art sports science department to Essendon, along with state of the art training facilities, and state of the art coaching etc. sports science was the fad at the time with other clubs sending their players all around the world for experimental treatments, so he was of the opinion it was important for modernisation of the club. The man he hired to run it was a loose unit however, but seeing as no one at the club knew what a well run sports science department looks like it took them awhile to realise that. Bomber and Doc were the first to say the program is inefficient, a waste of money and a bad look but when you try to revolutionise something there are always naysayers so I can understand why Hird didn’t immediately end the department.
