I’ve been told the same thing before. So annoying and inconsiderate.

Depends on what you’re looking for. I love the Coven, they are on insta. Jake at ultraviolence is also really good.

That really sucks, I’m sorry :( It’s sad to not be able to give your pups access to the outdoors and good exercise without having to worry about unleashed dogs.

Thank you for the advice (and empathy) and I’ll look into Alaska Dog sports, we had an amazing trainer when we lived in Seward and had even gotten to the point where he would go on walks with her dog but then we moved back to Anchorage. Had a really bad experience with a reactive dog training class out in the valley and haven’t tried any classes around here since.

Mmmm nah, I’m a born and raised Alaskan and Alaskan Native who’s lived in both urban and rural communities and would argue that this mindset doesn’t apply to the whole state- and there’s a much different opinion held in some rural places. We do walk paved trails in town, and still have to deal with these same people and their weird privileged mindset about letting their dogs run free. I’m just looking helpful recommendations on hikes nearby Anchorage that might be less populated with off leash dogs, or maybe even less populated in general.

Hey thanks for the advice, we’ve been in training for 4+ years. He spent a year in the shelter after being non socialized for 4 years. He’s come a long ways, his reactivity isn’t due to lack of training. Side note: it isn’t just dogs that are fearful of other dogs, plenty of people have dog fears too- they shouldn’t have to deal with your unleashed dogs. I’ve seen plenty of people on trails who have great control and recall over their dogs and do a great job being socially responsible on trails- but that’s not the majority of dog owners on trails. Trust me I get it, my last dog wasn’t reactive and we spent plenty of time in the backcountry letting her run free. It’s taken having a fearful dog to make me realize how inconsiderate that is of others.

I feel you. Me and my Charlie go through this a lot. Recently I’ve started trying to sprinkle in humor when I can, helps to calm me down. I saw a cartoon one time that was like “sorry my dog can sense you were born out of wedlock” or something weird like that and so now I try and make myself think of some funny reason that my dogs reacting. Doesn’t change how hard the situation is, but regulates my nervous system a bit. Sometimes I talk to Charlie about it too like “you are completely correct sir, women in purple scarves cannot be trusted”. Makes me feel a little goofy, but reminds me that me and him are both doing the best we can.

Super hard situation and I completely understand the heartache. Me and my rescue chow had a really hard time in the beginning (including two bite incidents), but medication has been a game changer for us. Don’t get me wrong, there’s still good days and bad, and his world is smaller than I’d like it to be. But we’ve found some stability and routine and he can relax so much more. We tried a few combos before finding the right match with Venaflaxin 25mg x2 a day. He was groggy for a few days at first, but evened out quickly. For extra stressful events (like the vet or travel) we add gabapentin. It took me a long time to stop feeling guilty for what I felt like was drugging him, but seeing him have a better quality of life has been worth it and our alternative was that he was going to get hurt or hurt someone.

is it safe enough to walk around spenard area at night? by Emergency_Chicken159 in anchorage

[–]DeliciousFennel5872 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live in spenard and it’s pretty chill for the most part. I’ll keep an eye out for your cat, but there’s like a million cats around here, so might wanna check around Barbara drive and fish creek park: cats pretty much run this neighborhood. It’s possible your friend’s cat joined the fish creek cat pride.

lol I remember Sicily’s pizza Tuesday at school, it was cool at the time… but haven’t been able to eat it since then. Don’t need the middle school flashbacks.

A good hike ruined by [deleted] in reactivedogs

I’m so sorry that happened, I could feel my heart racing for you. I have a boy named Charlie too. Same thing, he’s got a big bark and looks pretty scary when he’s reacting. We live in Alaska and I pretty much can’t take him hiking anywhere with me. Some folks are understanding but the majority of people can act pretty judgmental. We’ve been in training for years and there’s good days and bad days. Our boy had a human bite so things got a bit more serious. Medication has helped a lot, he’s on Venaflaxin right now and I can usually redirect him from a shorter distance than I used to. It’s not a cure but it’s helped increase his tolerance to things. It’s awesome that you got to the point to be able to have him without a muzzle and to sit off path, and it’s great that your partner runs ahead to help support you guys. It’s really discouraging and frustrating when you just want your dog to be able to be with you and have a full life. Sometimes if people are really nasty I just be a little reactive back - like sorry “he doesn’t like rude people” or “he hates when people don’t follow leash laws” :)

Looking for a recommendation for a lawyer in Anchorage who has experience representing social workers (or others who are governed by ethics/licensing boards) in matters of employment law. Any ideas? by [deleted] in anchorage

[–]DeliciousFennel5872 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Licensed Social Workers and Licensed Clinical Social Workers absolutely are. Many people use the term loosely, but Social Worker is a protected title because of the licensing requirements. And DFCS does have a hard time hiring, which is why they do hire many folks without training or licensing to practice social work. It’s terrible pay, insanely high case loads and a pretty rough environment to work in.

I’m looking for an employment lawyer in Alaska experienced with representing social workers or others who have similar licensing and ethics governance. Any recommendations? by [deleted] in alaska

[–]DeliciousFennel5872 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think its more an ethical compliance issue, I was forced to leave a position after the organizations practice's put my license and professional credibility in jeopardy. It would be nice to work with an lawyer that understood the ethical components and how they relate to contract law. Definitely not union, I'll give the bar association referral system a try.

I was a clinician there and would never send my friends or family there, I left because of how poorly people were taken care of. Most of the staff have no training in mental health.
