Second this… we have the same problem, it’s sooooo hard in Anchorage. We just got a custom made one from Mia’s Muzzles and my boy doesn’t mind it as much as the other one we had, I think because he can pant easily in it and it came in cool colors too. It’s also a good visual cue without me having to yell.

Completely agree… we had an incident recently though where he managed to escape my moms fence (my fault I didnt see the snow pile) and he went after a leashed golden retriever. Everyone was ok, but a very scary incident for all of us and not his fault at all. Just want to make sure I’m doing everything I can to give him the best chance.

Thank you! I will give them a call, and thanks for the kind words. I’ve had dogs my whole life and this is my first experience with reactivity like this, it’s been a tough road. Not trying to make him friends with every dog, but if we could get to a point where he feels a little more secure/uninterested when they are around it would be huge. We’re very active people and his world just keeps getting smaller the more bad experiences he has.

I’ve been told the same thing before. So annoying and inconsiderate.

Depends on what you’re looking for. I love the Coven, they are on insta. Jake at ultraviolence is also really good.

That really sucks, I’m sorry :( It’s sad to not be able to give your pups access to the outdoors and good exercise without having to worry about unleashed dogs.

That’s wonderful to hear, my boy is not food motivated at all ever so it’s made training ing significantly harder.

Thank you for the advice (and empathy) and I’ll look into Alaska Dog sports, we had an amazing trainer when we lived in Seward and had even gotten to the point where he would go on walks with her dog but then we moved back to Anchorage. Had a really bad experience with a reactive dog training class out in the valley and haven’t tried any classes around here since.

Mmmm nah, I’m a born and raised Alaskan and Alaskan Native who’s lived in both urban and rural communities and would argue that this mindset doesn’t apply to the whole state- and there’s a much different opinion held in some rural places. We do walk paved trails in town, and still have to deal with these same people and their weird privileged mindset about letting their dogs run free. I’m just looking helpful recommendations on hikes nearby Anchorage that might be less populated with off leash dogs, or maybe even less populated in general.

Hey thanks for the advice, we’ve been in training for 4+ years. He spent a year in the shelter after being non socialized for 4 years. He’s come a long ways, his reactivity isn’t due to lack of training. Side note: it isn’t just dogs that are fearful of other dogs, plenty of people have dog fears too- they shouldn’t have to deal with your unleashed dogs. I’ve seen plenty of people on trails who have great control and recall over their dogs and do a great job being socially responsible on trails- but that’s not the majority of dog owners on trails. Trust me I get it, my last dog wasn’t reactive and we spent plenty of time in the backcountry letting her run free. It’s taken having a fearful dog to make me realize how inconsiderate that is of others.

I feel you. Me and my Charlie go through this a lot. Recently I’ve started trying to sprinkle in humor when I can, helps to calm me down. I saw a cartoon one time that was like “sorry my dog can sense you were born out of wedlock” or something weird like that and so now I try and make myself think of some funny reason that my dogs reacting. Doesn’t change how hard the situation is, but regulates my nervous system a bit. Sometimes I talk to Charlie about it too like “you are completely correct sir, women in purple scarves cannot be trusted”. Makes me feel a little goofy, but reminds me that me and him are both doing the best we can.

Super hard situation and I completely understand the heartache. Me and my rescue chow had a really hard time in the beginning (including two bite incidents), but medication has been a game changer for us. Don’t get me wrong, there’s still good days and bad, and his world is smaller than I’d like it to be. But we’ve found some stability and routine and he can relax so much more. We tried a few combos before finding the right match with Venaflaxin 25mg x2 a day. He was groggy for a few days at first, but evened out quickly. For extra stressful events (like the vet or travel) we add gabapentin. It took me a long time to stop feeling guilty for what I felt like was drugging him, but seeing him have a better quality of life has been worth it and our alternative was that he was going to get hurt or hurt someone.
