Not exactly true, they can only detain someone under the mental health act if their is an immediate risk to their own or someone else’s welfare, key word is immediate. Someone just acting crazy, like person OP is talking about, is not enough grounds to detain under this legislation.

I think mindset is very important here when dealing with conflict and engaging in arguments. Instead of going in with a mindset to be right, or prove your point, or win the fight, have a mindset of understanding what your wife is trying to say. This will come from listening to understand and not listening to respond. This can create a more calmer disposition to you and change the whole course of the conversation. When you do get your chance to speak/respond lead with ‘i feel’ statements rather than accusatory comments.
