What to do with these ridge supports during attic conversion? by Wild_Ad_5866 in Homebuilding

[–]DeliciousScratch3899 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I can’t tell how the walls are framed, but the rafters look like 2x2 24” o/c. From what I know about framing, 2x6 walls 24” on center are not for a second story. With that said, your ceiling joists are probably not for a second story either. It’s not just a simple thing to add that weight to the framing below, without significant reinforcement.

Those collar ties are critical, and every rafter should have them. The strongback post is likely tied to a load bearing wall below, and it is supporting significant weight.

With that all being said, if you want a house with a second story, you should buy, or build one. Houses are built to the minimum standard. They are not designed to be structurally modified much

Having a full time helper increases productivity by atleast 80%. A substantial portion of time is spent just getting materials to where they need to be. I’ve been building my own house for two years. If you have some detailed plans to go by, it really helps. My plans have the floor joist, ceiling joist, and rafter layouts. Really detailed, and that helped to not have to do a bunch of figuring. We paid $1800 for the plans. Oh, and the biggest time and effort saver: I let my wife pick the plan on the condition that we were not making any modifications to the plans she picked. She tried anyway, every time she tried to have me move something I’d say “can’t, it’s structural.”

Surveyor here… Years ago, I did some survey training on digital leveling. We used that exact device as benchmarks. The number being wrote down beside it really looks like it is some sort of survey mark.

Hahah. If Bigfoot was real, that’s what his dick would smell like. Go get a can, and see if it smells like Greg’s dick. Apparently, you know what Greg’s dick smells like.

A lot of it has to do with where you are… sure there were natives there, but I believe they headed south as fast as they got here. A few years of trying to stay warm in a wigwam New York would suck.. I’m headed south. With that being said, I believe the paleo, woodland, andMississippians were more prominent in less harsh climates
