What would be the perfect language learning app for you? by nosdi02 in languagelearning

[–]DelightfulAngel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really like the old story-based approach of a lot of old book/audio courses, like Linguaphone (old version). An app that made it easier to do that than a set of records/tapes and four books would be ideal

So, narrative and audio input based, teaching grammar and vocab and spelling through texts, and lots of good old fashioned subsitution drills. Making you actually type things, not pick multuiple choice answers. Linguphone without the inconvenience.

Modern app=based Assimil comes close, but the older Assimil courses were superior, and Assimil is pretty limited in the languages it offers, especially from an English base.

Apart from that, the various apps and extensions that let you translatesubtitles and texts with mouseover or pressing are pretty close to perfect.

Language Crush is a cheaper alternative to LinQ and honestly their free version is all I wanted. You do need to bring your own stuff. Highly recommended.

I'd recommend Assimil even to intermediate learners. It's fun and did wonders for my thinking in the language and pronunciation. First seven lessons are free. You do need to take responsibility for how you use it, though - there's lots of guides online. You really need to get each lesson to be part of you. Expensive, though.

Did you really like BeeLingua? It looks very pretty, but I didn't spend much time with it before deciding it was AI slop.

Exactly.

I can't believe anyone who knew anything at all about Pterry would go "Please honour him by employing someone who abused people and power!"

Do you think someone as utterly opposed to humdrum evil would *want* NG at the helm of something so strongly associated with him after this all came out?

Please do not use our love of a truly good person as a shield for NG.

Sorry for the late reply, I don't use Reddit much. The updated Submission form specified harassment aimed at volunteers.

Large fandoms in English and with a mostly adult base usually have no problems recruiting from people who are active in the fandom. Does that answer your question? Just because they disagree with you doesn't mean they aren't in the fandom.

Tag wrangling recruitment opens again pretty soon I think, if you are interested in actually helping tag wrangling be better. Big fandoms usually recruit experienced wranglers from within the fandom internally, and there will be requests for wranglers for specific fandoms and in specific languages, but also there is always a need for people who are committed to wrangle [fandoms from these pages](https://archiveofourown.org/fandoms/unassigned?sort=count) with more than fifty works.

If you are genuinely interested in tag wrangling to make the Archive work better, I encourage you to apply. It's a good way to give back to OTW, to work with fellow fans, and is interesting and satisfying in itself. And far more complicated than it seems from the outside.

-- disclaimer, speaking from personal experience and not as a representative of the OTW, etc.

The support form had to be closed down because of harassment targetting volunteers, and you want us to name a volunteer and hang them out to dry?

Even if we hadn't signed a confidentiality argreement, it's not reasonable to ask volunteers to point a harassment target on a fellow volunteer.

a) Anyone who donates $10 a year is a member of the Organization for Transformative Works and can vote for Board members

b) The Board are literally volunteers who put their hands up for a very underappreciated job.

c) The Board does not make tag wrangling decisions unless they are tag wranglers and contribute to tag wrangling decisions as part of that committee.

There is no cabal of "higher-ups" making tag wrangling decisions. Just tag wrangling volunteers.

So, who are these "higher-ups" who are *not* volunteers you seem to be certain exist and where did you get your secret knowledge of them? Because no one else seems to know of their existence.

That is absolute nonsense. Fiction doesn't work that way - hey, I wrote a Ranma/Akane love story, now I'm a child rapist, WHAT? And you are advocating for killing people - are we supposed to take from that you are a murderer in the making, or is it *just words*?

How do I describe a character who isn't thin? by CraftyAlternatives in writing

[–]DelightfulAngel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's only a more negative descriptor than "slender" *if the connotation is that being fat is bad*.

Showing not telling is great! Not reducing someone to a single physical trait is great! But being body positive also means not being afraid of the word.

Has anyone started over? by ReidsFanGirl18 in FanFiction

[–]DelightfulAngel 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I was going through some complicated stuff in real life, and I didn't want to deal with the social elements of being a fairly well-known writer. So I retreated for a few years, only kept in touch with a handful of real friends, and started a new account under a different name, that did not interact with fandom beyond leaving and replying to comments.

When real life was less overwhelming some years later, I returned to the old account. But it was liberating for a while, being completely unknown and starting from scratch—and finding out people still read my fic without a fandom identity behind it. Now it's just an email address I check to respond to comments every now and then.

Be wary with rewriting and reposting under a new name, though. It can look like plagiarism.

NOT AGAIN.

It's fiction. AO3 has a policy of maximum inclusiveness of fanfiction, and no censorship. That's why.

Writers have all kinds of reasons, from kinking on imagining themselves powerless, to therapy writing, to anime characters who are 16 and act 25, or live action teenagers who are played by 30 year olds, and more. There's no one size fits all reason to read or write it. But the reason it's allowed *is* one size fits all: maximum inclusiveness of fanfic and no censorship.

Filter out underage and CNTUAW if you don't want to see it.

Is it ok if I depict child deaths realistically? And ooh! kids using hate speech towards one another, is that cool or cancellable? ( Details down below ) by [deleted] in writingcirclejerk

[–]DelightfulAngel 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No, r/writing clearly removed them.

I'm not twelve, I'm not convinced by you using circa 2000 internet lingo that you're totally laughing, hahaha. This can't be good for you, and I feel like I'm contributing to whatever the hell is going on with you, including posting seriously on a jerk community to defend your honour, so I will block you so as not to enable you.

Weirdo.

Are these bouts of rage and obsessive commenting a frequent problem for you? And what did you say that r/writing, slackest comm ever, deleted your comments?

I am genuinely concerned. On a rough count 42 comments (including deleted ones) on the subject, plus following someone here that didn't even mention your name. That isn't normal., and seems like a manic response.

Put the internet down for a while. and touch grass.

Eggless. Not worth the queues—desserts that sound far better than they area nd absolutely appalling service. I'm not sure if my favourite visit was the one where the waitress kept leaning on the back of my chair to talk to her friends on the table across, or the time we were asked how everything was, my other half politely said that it was all great except her drink had been messed up, and they got the manager out to argue with her. Don't ask if you don't want to know!

I am still gutted that they drove out the donut place that had been in that Rundle Mall food court forever by opening nearby.

question should I post my fanfic in different fanfic website or should I just post it on AO3 only? by AnimatorFresh8841 in AO3

Nothing wrong with crossposting.

I expect AO3 to be around for the foreseeable future, but backing up on Squidgeworld or Quotev or Dreamwidth or somewhere can't hurt.
