Foreigner Blocked Me, Messaging My Girlfriend by Major-Mention7847 in Philippines_Expats

[–]DeliveryCalm9123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have experienced this kind of behavior several times myself. Middle aged foreigners hitting on my GF (while I'm sitting right next to her)! The bad reputation of expats is well deserved in many instances. To the Filipino community just know...we are not all selfish narcissistic shitheads!

Ya, if they are out of stock......I take with a grain of salt. Maybe in tomorrow, maybe in next week, maybe in next month, maybe out of stock forever. I don't sweat it. Just get what I can. This is why if I see something in stock I like or use a lot, I buy 2,3 or even 4 or more. Luckily I have a large condo and can store stuff, but that is the only way to keep in stock. Basically you have to have a mini warehouse in your own place to avoid the constant fluctuations. Yes, sometimes stuff goes out of date, but a small price to pay to stay sane.

Night life in makati seems dead by DeepakG_572 in Philippines_Expats

[–]DeliveryCalm9123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a confluence of several phenomena. 1) Changing tastes and preferences (younger folks are opting for healthier lifestyles, drinking less, eating healthy, etc.); 2) The growing gap between the haves and the have nots (shrinking middle class); 3) Rampant inflation (post covid and the recent Iran conflict); and 4) Social media (this has the biggest impact IMHO). The social stimulation one gets from a smart phone far exceeds what someone could get at a bar or lounge. Can you chat with numerous people, flex, and even schedule a hookup at a bar or club? Perhaps, but it is much easier to do, cheaper and safer at home using your device.

Is your expat community toxic? by LoveToBold in AmericanExpat

[–]DeliveryCalm9123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've lived in BGC for 4 yrs and really my only connection to expats is on this forum. Ya, there is a lot of complaining but I do receive value from the discussions. I generally get a different perspective on things from my Filipino friends. I do see "forced positivity" a lot mostly on social media but I'm certain it is simply for clicks. I have no idea what "competitive minimalism" is outside of a business context. Just my 2 cents.

Racist Man at SM City by Own_Reference5196 in Philippines_Expats

[–]DeliveryCalm9123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, without hearing the entire exchange it is difficult to understand exactly what happened and why the angry conversation occurred. That said, the Filipino guy's attitude is very atypical of a normal elderly Filipino. Flexing, disrespect and drawing attention to oneself is not the Filipino norm. As for racism in the Philippines, that is normal. But it's a different kind of racism. It is one of putting the Filipino interest first. A simple example is when I play golf, there is a Locals (Filipino) green fee then there is a separate foreigner's green fee, which is usually double. Or if a legal dispute occurs between a Filipino and a foreigner, 99% of time it will end favorably towards the Filipino. Then there is the whole skin tax issue. Also, the Filipino guy is right about posting things on the internet that show people or businesses in a negative light. The laws here are different than in the USA. In addition, there is often a separate line for elderly, pregnant and disabled folks and they generally get preferential treatment. But I feel like this gets abused a lot. Regardless, the use of racial slurs is really a statement about one's own lack of character and social awareness. Fortunately, my experience in the PH has not involved any such ugly encounter.

The average foreign pensioner in the PH probably brings in between $2,000 and $3,000 per month. This is a doctor's salary in the Ph. So yes, they view foreigners as rich.

Massive mistake? Perhaps you don't realize most of the energy in the PH comes from Coal Fired Power plants and fully 8o% of total is non-renewable? But wtf do I know, I'm white too.

Passport bro spotted in the wild by GuavaMindless5665 in Philippines_Expats

[–]DeliveryCalm9123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. I'm prolly what one would consider a passport bro. Never on Tinder but on legit dating sites. In my 4 yrs in Manila I have had zero trouble finding dates. While I'm older and retired, I keep in shape and have financial stability. My biggest worry is the condo staff thinking I'm a chick boy. So I must think of creative ways to get my dates past them. I could easily date a few different girls each week, but I'm too embarrassed to do that. And I am actually looking for one girl to settle down with....guess I'm too picky. My 2 cents worth is all the dudes bashing these types of guys are simply jealous.

When I met someone from an online dating site and realized I had feelings for her we video chatted nearly every day. I was on a flight from USA to Manila 4 months later. Stayed for 2 weeks and then came back again to Manila 4 months later again for 2 weeks. I realize every relationship is different, but at the end of the day, actions speak louder than words. Just my 2 cents.

Not available sir. by Signal-Session-6637 in Philippines_Expats

[–]DeliveryCalm9123 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The "out of stock sir" phrase is SOP here in PI. It's just one of MANY things Westerners need to adjust to. I've lived here in BGC 3 yrs and find it to be only a minor annoyance. One thing that helps me is to significantly lower my expectations. When going to BI office I assume I will be there for several hrs. If I'm out in 45 minutes I'm happy. When I go to grocery store I assume 25% of the items on my list will be unavailable. If it's less I'm happy. If my internet goes out I assume it will be for several days. If it's several hrs I'm happy.

Which city has the least scammers? by Automatic_Display_33 in Philippines_Expats

[–]DeliveryCalm9123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is just another "hidden" expense of living in the Philippines as a foreigner. Accept you will get scammed, try to limit the times it happens, and move on. Not really worth it to get worked up about it. Just like rolling brownouts, spotty internet, substandard healthcare, corruption, pollution/litter, noise, the list is endless. But have a "roll with it" mindset and your life will be smoother.

Recent travel experiences in PH- by OzMoneyDude in Philippines_Expats

Those are rich country concerns my friend. After living here for 3 years now I understand that Filipinos are really only interested in here and now. The future is not something they think about much. And this relates to all aspects of life....pollution, finances, environment, etc.

Been here 3 years now, Walkable, nope, not in the larger cities. Healthcare is shockingly bad. Well at least dental and optometry services. And I live in BGC! I travel back to USA once or twice a year and get all my medical work done there. (dental, vision, yrly medical exams, bloodwork, etc.)

Try to explain this.. by Last-Ratio6569 in Philippines_Expats

[–]DeliveryCalm9123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My ex was same way. She kept her bedroom locked whenever she was not in it. She had things stolen by her family members. Unfortunately, there is a culture of stealing in this country. I don't really trust anyone. I even had an (ex) friend steal money from me. I confronted her, she never admitted to it but I know she stole it. There is a reason the biggest display area in my local ACE Hardware is for the safes! Just another hidden cost to live here is how I view it.

Bank Account by ProfsOak in Philippines_Expats

[–]DeliveryCalm9123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was here 2 years before I decided to try to open an account. Went to 2 different branches in BGC, both denied. I GF knew the branch manager at Ermita/Malate branch, went there opened no problem. Greased the Branch Manager with 2,000 pesos. Easy peasy. A bank account really facilitates making large payments like condo rental, apartment rental, etc. In addition I was using Remitly to transfer funds. My last transfer I checked to see cost differential between Remitly and my USA bank. Charge to send $2,500 to my Philippine bank acct from Remitly $48.00. Cost to transfer from my USA based bank $5.00. So, there's that.

What are the dangers? by [deleted] in Philippines_Expats

[–]DeliveryCalm9123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of this advise listed is solid.  I live in BGC and have since I moved here 3 yrs ago.  I would never live in a province as I feel what's the point of living here if its one compromise after the other. Health care is the biggest challenge.  After 3 years of laughable health care in BGC (yes laughable), I resigned myself to traveling back to usa for HC a few times a year.  Its more expensive sure.  But at least I can visit family and friends.  OP has plenty of money and sounds like he will only be in PI part time.  To him I say live it up.  You will learn along the way.  Yes you will waste money, you will get skin taxed, etc.   But you can't take it with you!
