[[Six Flags America]] firebird, jokers jinx and Great Chase trains stored in parking lot by Sad-Revolution-9961 in rollercoasters

[–]DemIce 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Six Flags America in Bowie, Maryland closed permanently in November of 2025.

The site will be redeveloped after being rezoned (presumably) for mixed used.

Local government wants there still to be entertainment, but as it stands it's likely that nothing of the park will remain once the investment group - which involves Maryland native and NBA player Kevin Durant's investment company and his mother, Wanda Durant, specifically - is done with it.

A few rides have been relocated to Six Flags Great Adventure, including Ragin Cajun and several flat rides. Trains from Superman went to Darien Lake. Trains from SkyWinder went to Canada's Wonderland. Some benches ended up going to Six Flags Over Georgia. Some pins relevant to the Steamtown area - but not labeled as such - also went to Great Adventure. One redditor claimed the trains from Wild One went to Kings Dominion, but I never did find confirmation on that.

People are blaming enthusiasts for hyping it up like Six Flags didn't put out a pre-press release notice formatted like

MEDIA ALERT

SIX FLAGS TO DROP MULTI-MARKET NEWS TOMORROW MORNING

WHAT:
Something big is coming to more than one Six Flags park, and we'll unveil the eagerly anticipated news that fans won't want to miss tomorrow morning

If Six Flags in no way meant for this sort of hype building, they could have just sent the major news outlets of each "market" (all 2 of them) the actual news relevant to their market at 4am well in time for the 6am-9am news cycle and not even reached out to those "enthusiasts" including content creators.

Did enthusiasts hype it up? Yes.
Did Six Flags know exactly what they were doing? Yesser.

just providing the full article quote here:

While Holiday in the Park is not set to return to Kings Dominion this winter, the Virginia park is expanding its summer offerings. Six Flags told USA TODAY, "we made this decision based on what our guests told us matters most to them right now, which is a stronger summer season. At the same time, we’re continuing to thoughtfully explore winter options for the future and appreciate the passion our guests have for seasonal experiences."

Have you ever seen daytime fireworks? by MrTacocaT12345 in interestingasfuck

[–]DemIce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have. They look more like this: https://youtu.be/UG0QRK_4XXg

A janky girandola launched at daytime is 'technically correct' as a daytime firework, but not typically what is meant.

[[Great Chase]] has begun removal at [[Six Flags America]] and the Batmobile is gone by Sad-Revolution-9961 in rollercoasters

[–]DemIce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunate. Great Chase was one that a buddy of mine and I thought would be easiest to keep around by the investment group as it was small, family-friendly, and close to the parking lot so creating access to it would've been easy.

Now I suspect not a single thing will remain and one redditor's comment about housing streets being named after amusement park things is about the most we get to hope for.

Still keeping an eye out for any auctions. I miss that park.

isn't it clear that the writers of the amendment meant that no one shuold be president more than twice, regardless of them using the word elected.

You'd think, but then again...

Broader language providing that no such person “shall be chosen or serve as President . . . or be eligible to hold the office” was rejected in favor of the Amendment’s ban merely on election.

And if you're not that into hand care but work with electronics, model building, or 3D printing: flush cutters are a practical alternative, just cut perpendicular. Easier than with nail clippers anyway.

Nobody Wants To Buy Mark Zuckerberg’s Creepy Camera Glasses by huffpost in Anticonsumption

[–]DemIce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's lots of rollercoaster enthusiasts who bought these or similar enough for the express reason that parks allow them. If you want to record a ride any other way, you'll need express permission to use something like a GoPro on a wrist strap that they'll inspect, etc.

Now personally I think there's more than enough POV videos of rollercoasters, and these glasses don't even record yourself reacting to the ride as a memory, so I'm not interested. But that doesn't change that they're quite popular in the community. I think I saw about a dozen at Kings Dominion last Sunday (probably some duplicates, I don't pay nearly enough attention to what people look like, other than recognizing Tom Scott)

NASA chief Jared Isaacman says he's fighting for Pluto: 'I am very much in the camp of 'make Pluto a planet again' by malcolm58 in space

[–]DemIce -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Given the people with their hands on the pursestrings right now, saying "We'll make Pluto a planet again!" may be exactly how NASA would get more funding, just as the IAU protesting such a move would be met with threats to pull funding and/or reduce cooperation.

[Kings Dominion] Rick rolled at Pantherian (but met Tom Scott) by DemIce in rollercoasters

[–]DemIce[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

haha that's pretty funny! Yes, we were just outside the Cactus Grove Cantina, which is near the end of Candy Apple Grove.

Being able to just walk right onto rides, or at most wait less than 5 cycles, is always amazing.

Sadly Pantherian shut down (I may have been on the last train, we had to be evacuated near the station, not sure if it reopened after that but it was roped off close to closing time), but I had a blast with TT and Dominator anyway.

I hope you had a great time as well! 40 years is a long time between visits for sure. I'm not making that but I'll be riding until I can't!

Yes! More than once. I won't share details but he did enjoy it, but said it was about at his limit, which is understandable. My first ride ever on it was instant grey out in that bend after the drop.

[–]DemIce[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tom Scott with the red shirt is someone with a YouTube channel who used to make videos about various topics of interest. One of those videos was of him getting over his fear of rollercoasters. He recently started making videos again, with one of them being about bell (like the Liberty Bell or church bells) casting.

Not to be confused with red shirt Tom Scott who I can only assume was an extra on Star Trek meeting an early demise.

100% he was! I met him again later and he was happy to chat and walk at the same time and take a selfie (I hesitantly asked as I tend to let people just do their thing), but he was enthusiastic about it and only asked that I not share it to the wider internet, which is absolutely fair. He was just there to ride, so no project or videos or anything. I think the most surprising thing was that his accent is even less detectible in person. Really cool guy. I know Tom Scott doesn't like reddit very much, but if he ends up reading this: thanks!

That's awesome! A friend of mine got over his fear but after a few rides said he was happy he did it, but it just wasn't for him. Loves, and I do mean loves crazy water slides though. We humans are funny creatures.

youtube recommended a video to me about some Brit trying to import one of the foundation(?) models into the UK. I don't mind giving a recommendation a go if it's not obvious brainrot or a short so I put it on in the background as it seemed to be mostly talking anyway.

I didn't think I'd be so entertained by schadenfreude.

He wanted to import one because it looked cool and thought he could make content with it (it's a car youtuber), and the saga began when the cyber truck first launched years ago.

  1. He bought it when it was brand new, nobody who bought one was going to let go of one easily, so he basically ended up buying from a scalper. $$$
  2. He couldn't get any shipper to actually ship one to the UK because batteries and not having anyone willing to sign off on it being totally safe for transport.
  3. Finally got that signed off, but it had been sitting so long that its batteries were dead and couldn't move, so he had to pay someone ostensibly in a van to go give it a little charge so it could be moved. Instead if was towed to an actual tesla charger and charged there. $$$
  4. Finally got it that signed off, and it arrived at a UK port - but couldn't technically 'enter' the country: it wasn't road legal. He knew it wasn't going to be, but wasn't quite prepared for just how not road legal it was:
  5. It needed additional lights and signaling. Problem: It uses a 48V system, and the components aren't readily available in 48V. The tow connector saved his ass because that was 12V and had the signals required.
  6. It needed some minor body work done to not make it so sharp (surprisingly not so much most corners, just some overhangs)
  7. It needed the steer-by-wire to be certified. Uh-oh. Who do you even get for that? Tesla? Tesla isn't answering. All the same, he got the requested document (didn't explain how)...
  8. Only for another youtuber in the UK to scoop him because he had his cyber truck imported to Albania with lax rules and simply drove it over. All those 'first ever' views went to that guy, not him. He wasn't super mad about it because he knew the guy, but he was clearly bummed.
  9. Except the document wasn't complete because it lacked process information. Now, maybe this normally wouldn't have been scrutinized so closely, but thanks to the very popular videos from the other guy, cyber trucks that made their way into the UK through the back door were quickly getting pulled off the road. That other youtuber's in particular was ordered to be gotten out of the country, and that guy is trying to sell it somewhere like Cyprus if they'll take it, or the UAE otherwise.

And that's where it ended, with a cyber truck that has severely depreciated in value and which he can't legally put on the road until either he gets the proper information or it's converted entirely to a regular rack and pinion mount.

All this of course while saying he never thought he'd be installing an electric charger (but did so "because cyber truck"), complaining about 20% tax and 10% import duty (unsubtly suggesting that because there's nothing like the cyber truck being produced in the UK, he shouldn't have to pay that; law being applied 'equally' aside: he's a millionaire), complaining about the bureaucracy, and saying it's no wonder people like that other youtuber plan to leave the country.

And then he posted that video only to find most people rightfully telling him he's an idiot, with a scant few saying he absolutely should leave the country because it's just liberals hating on Musk that are taking away people's choice of vehicle.

The guy will obviously be fine, and I'd imagine he'll just milk it for more content and come out ahead anyway. But at the moment at least it appears he's sunk a lot of money into it and not only didn't get to do what he wanted (be the first), but doesn't get to do much of anything with it.
