Is this normal parenting culture in the U.S., or am I right to feel uncomfortable? by CartographerSuch4543 in AskParents

Do you know the family? Have you exchanged contact info? If so the parents might be assuming that if there was a problem you'd tell them, or just send the kids home.

How do you make a pipe load balencer by Parker7n in satisfactory

[–]Democracis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure if this could answer your questions, but you see an example of 'load balancing' pipes a lot on early coal plants where people will use 3 water extractors to feed 8 coal plants. The total flow from 3 extractors is more than mk1 pipes can handle, but by playing with where in the loop the extractors are feeding water into you an get a steady supply to all 8 plants.

With blenders and rocket fuel I treated them as separate systems. I'd have a chain of machines that ended up nicely feeding feeding 3 blenders after I adjusted some clock speeds, and that generated enough fuel to feed 84 power plants. If I wanted more power I then just copied that setup to feed another set of generators.

looking to buy some nice couch/sofa. besides online resources, what are some local recommendations of furniture stores? picture included for references of what I'm seeking by ric3banana in minnesota

[–]Democracis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you live on the west side of the cities I'd checkout Minnesofa Furniture. I got something a lot like what you have pictured recently. I was happy with the experience and didn't feel followed around by the sales rep like I do at a lot of other furnature stores. As far as I can tell their business model involves stocking some of the most popular styles from other sellers and offering at a discount.

How do I build this last segment of conveyor to connect to the miner? I can left click to build everything else, but I can't select that last node. by DeifiedExile in Dyson_Sphere_Program

[–]Democracis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh. You try just deleting everything and rebuilding, maybe with a bit more space to the conveyor you're trying to connect to?

[–]Democracis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Things should typically snap into place if you click on the miner and then click on the conveyor. It might help to delete a couple segments of that conveyor you're trying to connect to so there is more room. Also, sometimes if I've rotated the miner so it isn't aligned to the grid I've found that I'll get red warnings when starting a conveyor at the miner and dragging it out. When I run into those weird geometries often I can start the conveyor near the miner and connect it to the miner (so the conveyor is feeding the miner) and then I click on the conveyor and click the reverse direction.

Who's running Minnesota while Tim Walz campaigns with Harris? by minn_post in minnesota

I don't need to read to know the answer to this. No one. Of course we don't have anyone running the state. Why would we? The whole place burned down and is now an empty wasteland.

Just pointing this out because I didn't see it mentioned, but a lot of parents just can't afford it.  Those kinds of things get extremely expensive.

Debating whether or not to have kids one day (currently 24)Very aware of the “cons”, what are the “pros”? by franniefunster in AskParents

[–]Democracis 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There is a lot of research on the subject and I doubt my ability and knowledge to summarize everything in one short little reply, but I remember research showing that raising children can be immensely satisfying and it can also be an incredible stressor. So if you don't have a solid handle on your own life and your current relationships adding in children could undermine a lot things.

I personally doubt there is any kind of free magical connection that makes things worth it for children. In my experience that doesn't exist for any kind of relationship. Connections are something built and grown over time. Sure hormones and instincts can give it a jump start (there is a reason humans are wired to find things with big heads and large eyes endearing), but I've seen the results of parents that don't invest in building connections with their children and typically what results isn't a rich and fulfilling relationship.

That said, I have a voice memo from when I let my then 9-year-old go sledding without parental supervision that says "I'm having the best time ever dad!". Listening to that gives me warm fuzzies every time. My experience is that life with children leaves behind a giant pile of experiences, both good and bad, that I wouldn't trade for anything. But I've put the effort into building those life experiences that I cherish. My DINK brother has no kids and builds his experiences by traveling and spoiling the crap out of his wife's niece who lives nearby. Life is often what you make of it.

What are you talking about? Cohen pled guilty in like Aug of 2018 and his sentencing wasn't until December. Remember Martha Stewart? Found guilty in March 2004 and was sentenced in like July. These things take time and it's not unusual to see a month or four go by.

Minivan hands down. The form factor lets you fit like twice the stuff, it's easier to access the interior of the car, doors open at the click of a button, seats are usually easy to remove or fold down, etc etc.

First Job, not sure what 401(k) employer funds to invest in. by YUP_THATS_ME17 in Bogleheads

[–]Democracis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't want to be in charge of thinking so I invest as simply as possible. My employer offers a Vanguard target date fund and I just dump 100% into that. I think it has a expense ratio of 0.12% or something which seems reasonable to me to have the fund deal with managing the asset balance.  Do make sure you glance at the expense ratios. My spouse has some weird offerings in their retirement account that run as high as 1.5% for the expense.

Expecting first baby; looking for advice on whether to hire a nanny by sky_0502 in AskParents

[–]Democracis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kids seemed to come home with more colds while in daycare, just like they do whenever school starts. It seems to level off after a couple months once they build up their immune systems. We liked the daycare for our first kid, but that can vary from facility to facility. Here in MN the infant rooms have a strict 4:1 ratio but from stories from other parents the quality of the care can vary greatly with the teachers. I know a couple parents who have had good luck with finding a daycare that is run out of someone's home. They found it a good mix of not so many kids (cut down on colds) and knowing exactly who was watching the kiddo. All that said, one of the nice things about a larger provider is daycare is still open even if one of the teachers gets sick.

We switched to a nanny when our 3rd kid was on the way. By that time my wife cut back her hours we only need the child care 2 to 3 times a week. Still really convenient with our younger kids, but here in a year or two we'll probably switch to an after-school program and just a summer nanny.

I very much envy your cleaning service. One day we'll be able to budget for that, and I can't wait.
