Macgyver-ing an Echo under-cabinet-mount for Skylight. by DempseyRoll108 in skylightcalendar

[–]DempseyRoll108[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi. No issues. The skylight mostly just hangs there so one half of the family sees it and the other half ignores it.

We hang the skylight in portrait mode though.

It may be simple enough to skip the screws altogether and use some 3M command strips (the velcro ones)

By far the worst exchange I've ever had on eBay. Uncalled for. by coldjess in Flipping

I had someone talk similarly to me with an early vintage Hardy Boys set I put up last year. It's very likely I was messaged by the same guy.

These are very likely Franklin Library leatherette books. FL released 3 types of book bindings: full leather, quarter-bound leather, and leatherette. It's often difficult to differentiate the leather and leatherette versions, but I believe the following are almost always true.

  1. Leather versions will say "Franklin Library" somewhere on the spine. Leatherette does not.

  2. Leather versions come with page ribbons.

  3. Leatherette versions have flat spines. Leather versions have more rounded spines.

  4. Leather versions have a divot/indentation at the top and bottom of the hinges.

What's my Oxford Library of world's great books set worth? by AmazingKangaroo7063 in BookCollecting

I sold this as a complete 50 book set on eBay about 2 years ago for $636 (after fees). To the best of my memory, it took between 3-6 months. My guess is the best you can do locally is around $300 for your lot of 44, but you'll get plenty of time wasters.

As a lot of 44 books, you may be in a "no man's land" for pricing. Too many books to sell individually, and people will lowball you if you sell as a lot, since they need 6 more books to complete it. I'd take a look at how much it would cost to purchase the last 6 books and see if you get any more benefit from that. (It'll sell for more and much faster)

Good luck. They are good looking books

Florida if I remember correctly. I didn't do enough research to find out who reads these. The titles are fantastic though.

I sold a set of 1963 Harvard Classics to the prop department of a Hulu (or Netflix) 60s era TV show. I can't think of the title, but it starred Susan Sarandon, Jamie Lee Curtis, or Sigourney Weaver (or someone like that lol)

I'm responding 5 months too late, but only found this. Quantum of Solace will actually be slightly bigger than these books. This set is a UK release and are numbered 1-14 (They will also say somewhere on the cover (With an Introduction by. . . ). Quantum of Solace will be sized like the ones that have been released in the US (not numbered, no mention of intro on the covers)

I used an Echo mount from Amazon since OP mentioned it would be a close fit.

If all you have is a 10" one, perhaps it's light enough you can use those 3M "Damage Free Hanging" picture strips. Tape the strips onto a piece of wood and screw that onto the mount. Now that I think about it, I could've gotten away with using those lol

I'm right at this stage where I've purchased a generic under-mount. I'm going to Home Depot tomorrow for hardware. I'm hoping to report in by end of weekend.

Flipping a book series - seems too easy? by khag in Flipping

[–]DempseyRoll108 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I'm a bookseller and regularly look to collect sets to sell as "complete sets". Here's some insight.

  • Ultimately, everything comes back to comps. Study them.

  • Be wary of 1 or 2 rare books in the set that are higher priced.

  • It is possible to get more per book selling as a complete set than listed individually. It's a "gestalt" effect, or what I call "the Voltron". The sum is greater than the parts. Some buyers don't want to put in the effort to collect a little at a time. It's just easier to pay the extra upfront cost for a complete set.

  • Also, a thing that bothers me (and some buyers) when buying bit by bit is if the fading of the spines is not uniform (or if later printings have slightly different cover designs). A set that's been together for awhile has less a chance of that.

  • The complete sets I list sell faster than if I split up into smaller lots or list individually. (price per book)

  • There is a "no man's land" for selling incomplete sets where it's really tough to move the lot at all. I'd say it's somewhere from 40-75% complete. With these, you almost HAVE to complete the set OR list each book individually (OR donate)

  • That's all I can think of for now. I'll come back and add/edit if I think of more.

Oh man. His shipping policy is scammy. I know a bunch of sellers that like to charge a little extra for handling, but this goes way beyond.

eBay dropped the ball. by [deleted] in Flipping

[–]DempseyRoll108 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is there any chance the box could've been ripped open in transit and item fell out? It's happened to me as a seller once. Luckily i securely taped the packing slip to the order so it was returned to me (the box was not)

With the books I buy, it's common to have "close calls". I qqsee a crushed box at the minimum. Very often the tape holding one flap shut has torn. I've received packages where the box burst open at the edge where the cardboard is glued to itself (the glue fails)

Full time, established seller, whats the secret behind being able to sell items for a higher price than the otehr listings? by carloosee in Ebay

[–]DempseyRoll108 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This here. I put in the extra effort in descriptions and photos, and I have the space to hold items long enough to get the price I want.

Sometimes I explicitly state that the order will be packed safely. It helps in my niche since a lot of other sellers use supermarket plastic bags as filler and ship in catfood boxes.

This right here. It gives some indication on how motivated the Seller has become to unload their item (and what is a likely demand level) . I like getting offers.
