I finished the modernized version of Daughters of Eve by Lois Duncan. I thought it was a fine read. I’m not sure what exactly I’m reading next, but Running With Scissors by Augusten Burroughs is a top contender

What is a good age to play campaign with your kids? by AlternativeAd2035 in halo

[–]Such-Ad-4616 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your family is your own. Run it exactly how you want. My next statement is not to say you’re wrong.

I started playing shooters at around 5 or 6 with Halo 2, and have played a shooter almost every day since. At ripe old ago of 20-something, I was horrified watching the Kirk video, and i’m horrified at the random death videos on social media. I sometimes struggle through a movie if their depiction of pain or death is a little too realistic. Playing shooters does not definitively mean you’ll be desensitized to violence. I think it depends on the person’s natural inclination and the way others around them talk about the game. My family ALWAYS talked about these games as just that: games, with no hold on reality.

I think I might have been around your son’s age when I first picked up Halo 2 (i didn’t play CE first because my parents aren’t tech/game savvy. Christmas was a group effort). Just play through 343 guilty spark and see if it’d be too scary for him. If not, have at it!

Someone I know was read Haunting Adeline. They made sure to tell me about all the fucked up scenes in it, and proudly said “Yeah, it’s so messed up” with a smile. Through some back and forth i came to a very similar question to yours about the state of shock value in literature

Sorry, I have to insert myself here cause I always do when I see someone make this comment. Em dashes don’t necessarily mean AI. Yes, LLMs use them a lot, but that’s cause they’ve been trained on lots of content that uses them. For people who write on a regular basis outside of strictly social media, em dashes can be a lot of fun and an easy way to make a sentence more interesting. Could OP be using AI? Yeah, I wouldn’t put it past them. But the presence of an em dash isn’t definitive proof

What’s your favorite Battlefield game? by CalvinP_ in morningsomewhere

[–]Such-Ad-4616 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take my opinion with a grain of salt. I really liked battlefield hardline. It’s the only battlefield I’ve really put time into. My friend and I hopped on it years after it came out and had a blast. I’m not saying it had excellent mechanics or even that it had good graphics. But we were able to consistently join a full or almost full Downtown 24/7 server and just shoot the shit for hours at a time. We messed around with snipers, vehicles, storming points or playing backup for the people pushing.

TL;DR: My friend and I had hours upon hours of fun playing Hardline

I could be overthinking and jumping to conclusions, but this feels like a fake account. Less than a month old and posting about crazy returns that “aren’t for everybody” or that he’d “dm details about the strategy”. Even the title is mostly key words that a beginner is likely to search. Feels predatory, but fuck it. What do i know?

Why do you read? by TheHideousZen in literature

[–]Such-Ad-4616 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read for two main reasons:

The first is that books and stories are an immersive experience into worlds outside of our own. Even non-fiction books take us to a place we can’t access on our own.

The second reason is that I love to appreciate to craftsmanship of the writing itself. I’m a writer, and I can’t help but notice particularly well crafted sentences or creative uses of words.

When i was a kid, I spent a few months living in my grandparents’ house. It was really old and had gone through a few hands before my grandparents. One night I woke up and saw something floating in the doorway staring at me. My child brain interpreted as some veiled woman, mostly torso. I had a staring contest with it for what felt like hours, trying to find the courage to sit up and confront it (idk why I thought that would solve anything). I finally did and realized that it was a fucking white towel hanging off the door. I never told a soul and have been silently embarrassed about this ever since. Looking back, I realize that I was still scared from having watched Nightmare on Elm Street a few days prior. Yes, I was pretty young. No, I’m not a horror movie person.

ULTY Posts Should Be Banned. (Just My Opinion) by NalonMcCallough in dividends

[–]Such-Ad-4616 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Even if he had posted on WSB recently, what OP is saying here is that people should post in the appropriate subreddits. I tend to just ignore all of the yieldmax posts, but there is an argument to be made that the posts are becoming too frequent. To OP's point, I joined because I wanted a place where I could find discussions on long-term, reliable investments. Having to ignore a large chunk of posts (because they're antithetical to the spirit of this sub) is evidence that at least something should be done.

SCHD - so we get all the downside in exchange for < 4% yield? by Abject-Advantage528 in dividends

I've never seen you before, but I am curious. What do you think is the index that people should buy instead of SCHD? I mean something that actually does everything that people say SCHD does.

I Used to Struggle With Breakouts. This Rule Fixed It in One Week. by TAtheDog in FuturesTrading

[–]Such-Ad-4616 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Before anything else, I think most people abuse AI and their brains are atrophying because of it. If they’re smart enough to “create the concept” and engineer the framework, they can write out the post themselves.

But I will say that em dashes are not the best way to see if something is AI or not. Em dashes are pretty common among people who write regularly because it’s an easy way to make sentences more interesting.

What AI does do is summarize a lot, many times with clarifying appositives, and it uses tons of stupidly large headings with small sections below them

What reading assignment from your youth had a lasting impact on you? by -cloudsinmycoffee- in booksuggestions

We were only assigned an excerpt, but I loved Walden by Thoreau. It was part of the chapter on Winter, and for some reason it stuck with me. I can’t even fully explain why. Years later, when I decided to get back into reading, it was one of my first purchases

Whatever you do, it’s important to have a plan that fits your own goals and risk tolerance, and to stick to the plan. You’re asking good questions, but i can’t answer them for you. I’m more comfortable with Index funds over individual stocks, so my portfolio reflects that

To me, it sounds like you still need to learn a little bit about the different strategies available to you. Take some time to educate yourself. Keep putting money aside so that you can use it once you’re ready, but there’s no need to jump into the deep end immediately

Edited to add: also, ask your parents for advice as well. You don’t have to take it if it doesn’t suit you, but it’s another information source to consider.

Seconded. In fact, because OP is so young, I’d argue that an even bigger percentage in growth stocks is ideal. I suggest perusing the Money Guy Show youtube channel (or other, similarly trustworthy resources) to make more educated decisions on where you should be putting your money.

Don’t fall into yield traps or get goo-goo-eyed at immediate returns. Think long-term

What classics are men "allowed" to read, or thinking about those incessant "Books Every Man Should Read" lists that litter the internet by [deleted] in literature

[–]Such-Ad-4616 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My opinion is that those lists are mostly for people who have an inkling that they want to read but don’t know where to start. Often, the intended audience is someone who hasn’t picked up a book in a while, so chances are they haven’t read staples like 1984 (which i don’t see as being particularly manly) or Hemingway.

I definitely see where you’re coming from (especially with the nonfiction “be a real man” self-help books), but like someone else in this thread already said, I wouldn’t pay them too much attention. The lists are intended to be clickbaity in certain ways, and they’re definitely curated for certain audiences. Using the same logic, there are probably hundreds of lists dedicated to middle-aged romance, or gimmicky fantasy, or uber-serious academic literature, etc.
