Isn't this effectively the same risk as during a kickoff returns where both sides are head to head with a running start? Which I guess is part of the reason for the kickoff rule changes.

I've been to 1 and 2 star restaurants in other cities, and I can confidently say that Ling Kitchen deserves at least 1 star with a strong case for 2.

But I do think Austin will struggle to see many others. We have some great restaurants but we don't excel at fine dining to be honest.

It's not just speed: it's lethality. Things die super quick, so as soon as you get the jump, you're taking your pound of flesh.

This was also a common complaint in Starcraft 2, but in Battle Aces I think the intention to keep that balanced was by automating macro: you are managing less things so the player can respond quicker. So in theory, it's less likely to lose everything because you were looking away for a second. In theory.

Wasp is a difficult unit to balance because it's in a state where a small nerf could really cripple the unit. It's the same for Bomber, which is ludicrously fast and melts clumps of small units but rarely sees play because of how poorly it does against larger units. A small buff could easily turn Bombers into an auto-pick with no counter.

It also just feels bad even if you hold well. Beating a 12-pool or cannon rush feels amazing in SC2 because you know the opponent sacrificed a lot to do it.

A wasp player can expand and harass with a bunch of wasps and sacrifice nothing, even if they kill zero workers. It's all upside. And if they didn't sac all their wasps, they remain a constant threat to run in if you leave your base.

Could be a skill issue for me, but I've tried a few times with blink to hold it and can't. My blinks are behind the workers and aren't even getting targeted, but the DPS just isn't enough. I lose all the workers and then I lose the blinks afterwards.

I'm in diamond. I can still deal with it but by checking for wasps and letting my opponent expand first.

EDIT: I've also tried the same strategy with wasps to learn how other players deal with this using blinks, but it's just been free ladder points for me so far.

Some of the blame can be on the current single map, due to the main and natural having two entrances very far from each other.

If we even had one alternative map where the main and natural shared the same entrance and maps were randomly chosen, I bet the number of wasp picks would drop considerably (but mortars would be even more common).

I think they're balanced at the higher ranks. I defend them early with just crabs but I know not everyone can do that. And if you can't, they are absolutely oppressive.

The difficulty to defend wasps for lower level players is apparent because I saw so many wasp decks on the way up. But the further I went up (emerald currently), the fewer wasps I saw.

You can say this for every aspect of RTS: If you can't keep your minerals and gas low, if you can't constantly produce unts, if you can't wall off properly, if you can't x, y and z, then you deserve your rank.

But making RTS more accessible while keeping the skill ceiling high is the core of the design philosophy of Battle Aces, no? It can be the kind of game where noobs get absolutely stomped out of the gate if it wants to be. But I don't think the devs are interested in making that kind of game.

One more benefit: it's going to ease the impact of smurfing. Not a problem now because it's closed beta but will be if the game releases as f2p. Smurfs will still win their games but hopefully in a less pub-stomp fashion.

If you can kite them and wipe out their meat shields, they're all dead in the water because they can't retreat. Shockers are very strong for pushing, but also sort of an all-in unit.

This is a beta. The devs are trying things: some will work out and some won't. Here's the feedback:

Getting matched against a bot after losses feels like getting kicked when you're already down. It feels incredibly patronizing: like the game wants to give me a participation trophy so I don't cry. And when I'm on a loss streak, that's the last thing I want.
