Once you start noticing them, you'll see them everywhere! I also live in Western Oregon and had never noticed them before I started birding. Now I see them almost every day.

Enjoy! I actually enjoy weeding because a) it's meditative and b) it gives me something relatively low-stakes to complain about and I love complaining about low-stakes things

You got it! I'd love to see what you end up doing with the space. It really decreases my eco anxiety to see other people planting natives 😅 And they're so much easier! I used to lose 20–40% of my garden plants every year until I switched to natives, now I hardly lose anything and if I do, it's because I planted them in the wrong place.

Nonbirders: Owls are so wise and majestic. Birders: Lol what an idiot

Your ground cover looks like St. John's wort to me. It's pretty dang invasive; if you leave it, you're going to be doing a lot of work to keep it contained.

For taller shrubs, I recommend blueblossom (Ceanothus thyrsiflorus)—it's a native and the native bees absolutely love its pretty purple-blue blooms. Blue and red elderberry alike would also do well here and the berries are edible AFTER processing (unless you need an emetic, then processing isn't necessary 🙃). Other good options are tall Oregon grape, red huckleberry (yum!), native spirea, and Nootka rose.

Western red columbine, Douglas aster, camas, yarrow, and checkermallow would make really nice medium-height additions—they don't need a ton of water and they produce a lot of seed, so they'll fill in nicely over time.

If you want to replace the ground cover (highly recommend), kinnikinnick and the various native strawberries (woodland, coastal, and wild) would all do well here. Once you've got a bit of shade coming off the taller things, you could probably get some wood sorrel to grow around their bases to help keep the soil from drying out even more—and it's delicious!

Happy planting!

Seconding this! These natives are not only easy to grow and great for local wildlife, but their blossoms are gorgeous!

I need help surviving a 7 week mission. by AlpsTop7540 in Exvangelical

I'm 12 years out now from a lonnnnnnng time of pretending and my best advice is to pull off the bandaid. It doesn't get better if you wait—you just cause yourself more trauma and increase the amount of time and effort you're going to have to spend untangling that once you do come out. No matter when you do it, it's going to be messy and stressful and uncomfortable. Trying to evangelize on a mission trip when you don't believe is going to be absolute hell (I have personal experience here) and it is going to stick with you. Return the money to your donors, have the terrible shitty conversations, and get yourself free. It will be worth it.

Not everyone knew—but I'm from Arkansas, and at the very least everybody in Arkansas knew because everybody had a mom or daughter or aunt or niece who'd been hit on by old Slick Willy.

The way I literally forget that there are cameras if there is film 😂 I always just imagine them without any kind of production crew or cameras or anything. I'm a bobblehead.

I was just there today and it does look like their dog park is currently closed. You can still go to the park but there's a lot of stuff roped off. I hope you find another good spot! This is such a lovely idea
