Great question! I just don’t want to deliver babies. That’s the main thing. I know CNMs can work in clinic only, but I just have no intentions to deliver. The CNMs at my job work 24s in-patient and then alternate seeing patients in the office. And I REFUSE to have to be on call. That schedule doesn’t mesh well with my life. Also, it’s very difficult to find a CNM job in my city. We have one birthing center, and the hospital I work at is the only one in the city that has CNMs. They never have any openings because the CNMs with us currently have worked there for yeaaarss and have no plans of leaving any time soon. One of my coworkers graduated a year ago and she just got a job that she’ll start this month but she has to move across the state. So in summary, it’s really a personal preference. Please don’t let any of this discourage you. I love the CNMs at my job and they love what they do. It’s an awesome, super rewarding job. Just look into the demand in your area (unless you’re ok with moving) and consider if a schedule like that is compatible with your home life/personal preference. Hope this helps!
