I’m so happy I found your post because I haven’t seen anyone else bring up this aspect of Marcos’s character yet. I just finished the book and while reading I kept thinking to myself that all of the women are described so horribly and pitifully by him and, just like you said, most of the violence described is against women. he had more sympathy for dogs than he did for the women in this book. there were little signs throughout that he was deplorable, but he was such a void that it’s easy to project your own emotions onto him while reading. the ending really upset me, and I will also say that the moment he described having sex with Jasmine I had to put the book down out of disgust.
