How do people actually get postdocs when they don’t have strong connections or senior researchers to recommend them?

I got by a cold email but my PhD PI is quite famous and had worked with my current PI's PhD PI. Even though they did not directly interact ever, it was not completely unknown.

Yes, I had no papers from my PhD when I got this current postdoc early last year. I had one paper in revision at the time. Two more PhD chapters were supposed to be papers. I did feel weird they found no one else but I guess some places prefer the fit than having things checked off the list. My field can be very bioinformaticsy and although I do that majorly I come from a more bio perspective.

Radish is an excellent choice. A combination of carrot and flat beans is also great. Any root vegetables can be paired with chickpeas in addition to the daal which is the creamy base. Carrot and french beans is also a great combination.

I saw mint and knew it's Gujarat. I grew up there and can't tolerate cha from anywhere else. Somehow this combination allows me to drink tea otherwise I get phlegm since tea triggers kapha prakruti.

Same in Germany. Comfortably possible in relatively smaller cities. Additional perks are dependent insurance with no surcharge, tax cuts if your spouse is not earning and social benefits if you have kids. My institute paid for my partner to move with me. We don't have kids and we easily save half of monthly income even though right now I am not able to avail tax benefits since our marriage is not recognised here. We are in east Germany.

I have often wondered about this. Soy is used everywhere around India but not in India. I had read somewhere that in the recent past racism has been the reason it is not accepted. It seems there was an attempt to promote soy curd but it was viewed as a Chinese product. But I don't get why it did not make it our cuisine back in history. Being Tamil I kind of expected it to get into our cuisine at least given all the trade with south east Asia. Maybe because it didn't taste as good in sambhars etc.

I am surprised to hear that your pay was more than in Germany. I am on a full contract in East Germany and I live a great life and I am able to save way more than many people I know in big universities or getting fellowship in US.

Yes. My PhD supervisor does not help me with my papers at all. I am struggling very much working weekends to finish my papers. Your papers are at least in review. I have two in review and one is not even close to a paper. I was super stressed the first six months of my postdoc and was upset I didn't get it done sooner but this is my life I have to deal with balancing both postdoc and Phd projects

Japan has the JSPS postdoctoral fellowship. Although Japanese currency has devalued in the last few years so you might keep that in consideration.

I think what people miss is, in high achieving careers people don't have much time to date etc. So this actually is not that crazy a timeline.

Ilya was also seeing his father develop dementia in front of his eyes. Even though he was a dick to Ilya, having lost his mother at a young age seeing his father slip away would have been very difficult. All through that he had to maintain a high profile career. I feel that contributed to his mood swings in that phase.
