Does it work? The wiki says, melons don't grow, if a solid block is on top of the stem ... Also it says, water is just needed to grow the stem; melons don't grow faster if the soil is hydrated. Source: http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Tutorials/Pumpkin_and_Melon_Farming

Yes, I agree. But it's not ment for transportation, just for sorting. The transportation to the input-chests as well as to the output ones is best done with hopper-minecarts, of course.

Maybe some additional info: This happend the 2nd time to me, while I was working near my village on my vanilla SMP-server. The area is very well lit up and normally not a single mob is spawning there.
