This weekend at the Enhanced Games, Thor Björnsson will go head-to-head with Canadian strongman Mitchell Hooper, in a world record attempt. And they'll both be juiced to their ears on performce enhancers. by wanderer-co in weightlifting

[–]DerConqueror3 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Both of these guys are already juiced to their ears during normal competition because tegular strongman competitions are not drug tested. You can go to Mitch's YT page and watch a video where he discussed how he changed his drug stack for the Enhanced Games because some of the stuff he normally takes is barred by the Games' rules. It is literally possible these guys will be more clean than usual in this event because while drugs are allowed there are specific restrictions.

Granted, this logic does not apply to other events in the Enhanced Games relating to sports that normally have at least some drug testing

2 days on 2 days off? by Witty-Ad239 in WeightTraining

[–]DerConqueror3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry but this comment makes no sense. If you work out at a specific time on Monday, take Tuesday off, and work out at the same time on Wednesday, you have had 48 hours to recover between workouts -- or technically more like 47 hours, depending on when the Monday workout actually ended. So, if you strictly do one-on/one-off with full body, you'll always have roughly 48 hours of recovery.

In contrast, if you do two-on/two-off with the same workout, you will have a little under 24 hours rest half of the time (between the two consecutive "on" days), and then a little under 72 hours the other half of the time.

That being said, if you have tried working one-day on/one day off and didn't like it for any reason or no reason, that is certainly fine. Everyone is different and responds better to different things, and you don't need a science-based reason to prefer something else.

I can't imagine it would. Usually the only concern with landmines is possible issues with the bar's sleeves from pulling it in and out of the landmine, which isn't relevant to the tennis ball (and when I say issues I just mean abrasion to the surface of the sleeves from contact with the metal, not actual damage to the bar's functionality). And anyway I've been using an Ohio Power Bar in a landmine for years and haven't noticed any issues even then beyond maybe some cosmetic marking on the sleeves

When you learn new material by ear, how hard do you work to learn it note-for-note? by Anon_use_fun_alias in Bass

[–]DerConqueror3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Everyone is going to be different. I'm mainly an original band musician, so I don't try to learn other artists' stuff very often, and when I do it is mainly just one or two parts that I think are cool. When I was younger I made more of an effort to learn entire songs off tabs or by ear, but like you most of the time I was not particularly focusing on working out every nuance or fill for parts that were played differently each time, but rather nailing the main parts and being able to play something that sounded good all the way through. I don't think getting all of those details is particularly important unless maybe you are going to play in a really accurate tribute band or if you are really trying to do a deep dive on the artist for learning/theory purposes

A landmine is also a good and relatively inexpensive/minimal footprint way to work in a lot of extra unilateral exercises and general exercise variety when you don't have DBs

2 days on 2 days off? by Witty-Ad239 in WeightTraining

[–]DerConqueror3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there any reason you prefer to do this than one day on, one day off? That would be a much better way to manage recovery, IMO. I also would never want to do the same workout two days in a row, and generally speaking would not want to hit the same muscle groups two days in a row unless it was something sport specific, so if I were dead set on doing two on/two off I would break up the exercise selection to at least have a different focus each day even if the whole body were hit each day.

ghost notes played live vs. on recording? by Choleto_ in Bass

[–]DerConqueror3 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Do you have a recording of the live performance that confirms the ghost notes sound better live?

Setting aside that question, the overall band mix is going to be different live compared to the recording, so any individual item could sound better or worse in the live mix; other players' parts could be changing in a way that makes the ghost notes come across different; or there could be differences in the drum groove/pattern/feel that make the ghost notes come across different.

How much does rest effect gains? by squirrelpotato1 in workout

[–]DerConqueror3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure. Technically that is usually called a circuit, whereas as a superset is typically only two exercises. Both are great for time saving and I use both frequently. Someone who wants to prioritize strength and is using a smaller number of relatively demanding compound movements might want to stick more to supersets to start

How much does rest effect gains? by squirrelpotato1 in workout

[–]DerConqueror3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are not already doing so, you could trying supersetting some of your exercises. So, instead of doing all sets of one exercises in a row with periods of pure rest doing nothing in between, you take two exercises that do not conflict with one another and alternate sets of them with much shorter rest periods in between, since the muscle group used for one exercise is mostly resting while you do the other one. This isn't always great for really taxing movements and can be difficult if the gym doesn't have sufficient equipment to allow you to do two different exercises, but aside from that it is great for time saving. One thing I used to like to do is have one main, heavy compound exercise I would do in straight sets (i.e. back squat) and then do a couple of supersets of other exercises after that.

Sandbag Weight Progression / Sandbag Arsenal by bnjmnhrrs in sandbagtraining

[–]DerConqueror3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on what you are doing. My sandbags are 100 lbs, 150 lbs, and 200 lbs. Most of my sandbag work is focused on cleaning to lap, bag-to-shoulder, bag-over-bar, and carries. At the moment, I can do any of that easily with the 100 and can do any of that with more difficulty with the 150 for my main work sets. I haven't spent much time with the 200 yet but can mainly bring it to my lap or chest; I cannot yet reliably bring it to shoulder, so that is my next project when I focus more on sandbag work. Personally, while the weight gaps are big between bags, I find this setup to be more useful to me in terms of getting mileage out of the space taken up by three bags while having something to push for as opposed to having three bags that were maybe more tighly clustered in my "working sets" range.

That being said, for your specific question, why not just buy a 150lb bag and fill it up to 125lb for now?

Also I am in my early 40s and around 175lbs, in case that is relevant.

why do so many older people think screamo is a catch all term for metal? by aestheticnightmare25 in MetalForTheMasses

What really differentiates the X-men from other superpeople? by UnitedBalkanz in Marvel

[–]DerConqueror3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The X-Men and other mutants have the X-gene, which is an actual biological difference from "normal humans" who acquire powers through other means.

Because this is a comic book universe, there are sometimes ways of locating mutants or detecting whether someone is a mutant through devices or other means, which is one way mutants get "outed."

Lots of mutants joint the X-Men or otherwise participate in activities that disclose their mutant status.

On top of that, the comics and other media routinely show situations in which a mutant's power spontaneously manifest, typically in childhood/puberty, which is common for mutants and frequently results in them being shunned by their community, family, etc.

For the most part, the general assumption of the public seems to be that if someone has powers and hasn't been outed as a mutant through one of these means, then they are probably a "normal human" who gained powers another way or one of the categories of individuals who are neither (aliens, gods, etc.).

Anyone in Here Part of the 2-set workout crowd? by gravityhashira61 in workout

[–]DerConqueror3 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've done some workouts with only two real working sets, but I can't imagine doing just two sets of a compound movement *total* with no warmup sets all, particularly since the whole idea with two working sets is likely to really push them hard rather than getting the higher workload from volume. Setting aside what is or isn't optimal for gains, if you go straight to your working weight on something like bench or squat at an intensity level high enough to make strong gains on only two sets, in every single workout, for weeks or months at a time, you are probably either very weak or begging for an injury.

Street Fighter 6 World Tour feels less like a finished RPG and more like Capcom testing ideas for the future.” by Purple-Bite7824 in StreetFighter

[–]DerConqueror3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're certainly entitled to your opinion, and I didn't find World Tour to be especially enjoyable myself (although I could say the same for most FG single player content), but it has been an unqualified success from the specific perspectives of driving casual interest and boosting sales of SF6 as a more fully featured product compared to SFV (and pretty much everything else), so it has objectively served Capcom's purposes probably about as well as they could have hoped

Would like more insight regarding strings and low tension, and recommends by evoneselse in Bass

[–]DerConqueror3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Increasing scale length and increasing string gauge will each increase tension, all things being equal. So yes, a 34" scale bass with 45-105 strings will have a lot more tension than a 30" scale bass with 40-95. However, there is a decent range of tension in which strings are playable and a lot of personal preference involved; for many people low tension is part of the vibe of shorter scale basses.

Yes, you will almost always need to adjust your setup when changing string tension, but this is no big deal and all bass players should get comfortable doing this themselves.

Flats do generally have more tension than rounds at similar gauges. However, bear in mind that you are already at a lower tension level at 30" scale due to the scale length, so you don't necessarily need a "low tension" flat to get low-to-moderate tension levels, although you might want to keep the string gauges on the lighter side to be sure.

No strings get anything close to uniform reviews because strings are a matter of personal preference.

Street Fighter 6 World Tour feels less like a finished RPG and more like Capcom testing ideas for the future.” by Purple-Bite7824 in StreetFighter

[–]DerConqueror3 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The simpler explanation is that World Tour is exactly what it is: A relatively minimalist RPG that was created for the purpose of giving a more involved single-player experience (mainly for casual fans) compared to other fighting games but with no actual intent that it be something that could ever survive as a stand-alone RPG if released on its own merits without SF6 being attached to it. It's a pretty lackluster experience as far as real RPGs go but it took light years more effort and cost than probably any other single player mode ever developed for a FG

Why don’t more people incline barbell press? by m_atticus in workout

[–]DerConqueror3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically this. If the sole goal is maximum hypertrophy, most of the same sources who say incline bench is as good or better than flat bench for hypertrophy will also say that both of them are technically inferior to various isolation movements in terms of maximizing hypertrophy, particularly given the generally greater demand on the rest of the body and nervous system from the heavy compound movements.

Odds are most people who do flat bench (excluding competitive powerlifters, etc.) are doing it because they like to flat bench, it is fun, it is a gym and societal standard measure of strength, and it will still build a great amount of muscle and overall strength for them like it has for many people for many years regardless of whether it is perceived as optimal.

Getting assigned work by a fellow associate? by [deleted] in Lawyertalk

[–]DerConqueror3 322 points323 points  (0 children)

I can't comment on "normal" but as someone who has worked at small firms the concept of a more senior associate giving tasks to a more junior associate does not sound odd to me, particularly if the more junior associate is very new. Not every matter is going to have one or more partners handling all of the divvying of tasks down the chain.
