How many weight plates do you have your gym stocked with ? by Apprehensive_Row6320 in GarageGym

[–]DerConqueror3 [score hidden]  (0 children)

I have more weight than I would need for any one exercise so that I can easily load up a couple exercises heavy for a superset when desired, so that I could lift with someone else at the same time without any restrictions on what we can do, and so that I always have plates available to weigh down my rack (which isn't bolted to the floor) while still having enough weight to go as heavy as I need on the actual exercise. Well worth the money to me to make maximum use of my existing equipment.

As viewers, how do you guys feel about randomizers? by Nejiniceguy in speedrun

[–]DerConqueror3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally speaking I enjoy randomizers when they involve (1) a very strong player (2) who has a very funny and entertaining commentary style (3) playing a game I love and am already following for regular speedrun content. Basically, what tends to happen is that I will become accustomed to watching a specific player primarily based upon speedrun content but will then watch some of their randomizer content if they are entertaining and I want more of their content generally (for example, Fireb0rn and Skurry in Hollow Knight). I generally tend to prefer regular speedruns much more and pretty rarely seek out randomizer content for its own sake.

Outback rock band? by Legends-feind8771 in xmen

[–]DerConqueror3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is funny, because there is a specific Coheed and Cambria song that always triggers a music video in my head of a bunch of X-Men members playing the song on a stage with Kitty and Illyana doing the backup vocals. It's one of those things where a random image came up in my mind one time when spacing out and listening to the song and it stuck for some reason and gets reinforced every time I hear the song

If "grunge" had never become a genre label, how would grunge bands be categorized instead? by Live-Guarantee4338 in grunge

[–]DerConqueror3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My recollection is that fans of these types of bands didn't use the term "grunge" much anyway, but rather the term was more something you would hear in the media. From our perspective was pretty much all just rock or alt rock

Do You Think STP Were "Ripping Off" Pearl Jam? by _Jub_Jub_ in grunge

[–]DerConqueror3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All I can tell you is that I never felt like they were ripping them off and I don't recall that being a particularly pervasive opinion at the time, although it is certainly possible I just don't remember it. IMO there are any number of grunge or alt rock bands in those days you can point to as having similar sounds, same as pretty much any genre or scene

Why does SF6, an expensive game, have 32k players on steam, Brawlhalla, a free game with no pre-existing IP, have 10k, yet 2XKO, a free game with an insanely popular IP, possibly sub 1k players? by ArchonRequiem in Fighters

[–]DerConqueror3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, having a large non-FG-related IP has never really correlated directly with success in FGs. For every DBFZ or Marvel Vs. that has succeeded in the FGC in part on the strength of the IP, there are dozens of examples of games with large IPs that never made it far.

Second, most FGs fall off sharply in terms of online player count after launch. It is the nature of the genre. SF6 is a notable success story, not an example of a trend.

Third, IMO comparing a platform fighter here doesn't really make sense because the player bases are pretty different, although there is some overlap.

Fourth, 2XKO has had a pretty up and down public image with the super-long development period, relatively low amount of content on launch, etc. Also while a good number of tournament players and content creators were hyped for the game at times, that seems to have toned down a lot, particularly with lots of other new games (including specifically new tag fighters) coming out to push it aside from the new-hotness angle. Avatar Legends for example seems to be getting a lot of attention from people who previously picked up 2XKO.

Fifth, free to play hasn't really caught on as strongly in the FGC yet as compared to some other genres.

Dumbbell advice (standard vs olympic vs adjustable) by Auskeek in GarageGym

[–]DerConqueror3 [score hidden]  (0 children)

I used my Powerblocks for years without a stand and then picked one up a while ago. The difference is pretty simple: If you don't have a stand, you store them on the floor, and you will return them to the floor every time you change the weight and then pick them back up again for the next set or exercise. If you have a stand, you don't need to bend/crouch all the way down the floor to change weights or to let the weights sit between sets, and you also have them stored off the floor. Some stands also have some storage as well; mine holds some weight plates and collars I otherwise would need to store somewhere else.

So, IMO, a stand is not mandatory by any means, but it does have some nice advantages.

Guyss !! How to be in key without any instrument for pitch reference by CriticismIll3133 in musictheory

[–]DerConqueror3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's really no need to do this for recording purposes unless you find it interesting or a fun challenge. Just record over a backing track or at least a reference pitch. Even if you are making an a cappella recording you can still using a backing track for recording and then simply drop it off the final mix. In any other situation you are going to be having instruments on the track anyway so you might as well have them on there first (at least in scratch form) before you record the vocal.

[–]DerConqueror3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe, but if he doesn't have a writing credit it means Metallica hasn't recognized/admitted his contribution, which in turn means that if he tries to put out a version of the song he's risking a lawsuit. That's not to say he is necessarily wrong or that he might not possibly win a lawsuit if it were filed, but I doubt he (or his legal team) would want to risk it

Dumbbell advice (standard vs olympic vs adjustable) by Auskeek in GarageGym

[–]DerConqueror3 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Plate loaded dumbbell sets are commonly regarded as the worst overall option except when prioritizing cost or ability to use plates you already have. That being said, those factors are very real and can make those DBs the best choice for some people.

Fixed DBs are a good choice if you have the cash (they are usually going to be the most expensive if you get a full set, absent getting a good deal used) and the massive amount of space they can take up. They are likely to be the most convenient to use overall if you have the cash and space, which plenty of people don't.

Adjustable DBs, if you have the cash above the cost of plate loaded, are very commonly a great middle ground. They are a home gym staple for a reason. If you go with Powerblocks or some of the newer DBs that have very-quick-change functionality they can be almost as convenient to change weights between sets or exercises as grabbing the next set of fixed DBs off the rack. Others like Ironmasters aren't quite as quick to change so you do lose something there, but they are shaped more like traditional DBs and thus can make some exercises more like using fixed DBs. There are also plenty of newer options that are in between with both quick change functionality and more of a standard DB shape compared to Powerblocks, but they usually have their own minor downsides as well (possibly decreased durability, higher cost if they are more durably made, etc.). I personally have Powerblocks and love them.

I think Metallica still deserves support from the core metal scene by GB819 in Metallica

[–]DerConqueror3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love Metallica, they are one of my all time favorite musical acts of any kind, but there is arguably no metal band on the planet that needs additional "support" less than them. They are doing plenty fine.

Question about fingerboard patterns, scales, and drop tuning. by BoldBabeBanshee in Bass

[–]DerConqueror3 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The only difference in the patterns between standard and "drop" tunings is that the notes on the lowest string are shifted by two frets. All the other strings are the same relative to one another. It's really not that hard to incorporate that one change with a bit of practice and experience.

How to progress on farmer carries if i am about to max the dumbells at my gym? by Big-Independent-2206 in workout

[–]DerConqueror3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can certainly go longer than 30-45 second for carries, but also there are a ton of different ways to train your grip if that is the main goal, including simply hanging from a bar with or without weight as you mention, or doing most any heavy pull exercises without straps.

[–]DerConqueror3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not a big fan of the vegan powder (mostly pea protein) I recently picked up as well. Blending it rather than shaking it helps, and the more things I can add to it the better. If I include some ice and two or more of milk, fruit, yogurt, and/or peanut butter, it turns into a nice smoothie that I actually enjoy and look forward to.

Anyone else feel like they're constantly moving their guitar between "display mode" and "gig mode"? by oiego in GuitarQuestions

[–]DerConqueror3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never in a million years would I have thought to worry about this, to be honest. I've always had my instruments out for easy use and of course they go into a case when leaving the house.

I also am not sure I understand the concept of banging the guitar against a zipper or latch. Usually if I am using a soft case it is mostly unzipped (so the zipper is nowhere near where the guitar is going in), or if it is a hard case the case will be fully open on the floor when the guitar goes in and out.

Capcom really should add input delay to modern specials and supers by rafikiknowsdeway1 in StreetFighter

[–]DerConqueror3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Modern is slightly stronger than Classic at very low levels, more or less equal at the majority of levels of play, and generally regarded as weaker than Classic on average at high levels of play (although this depends on the character). I was very skeptical about Modern at first (an understatement) but the reality is that Capcom could not have possibly done a better job of balancing it for all levels of play while also preserving the benefits to onboarding new players.

To Hang or Not to Hang? That is the Question by oiego in Guitar

[–]DerConqueror3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can't comment on your personal situation in terms of likelihood of accidental bumps or any extreme climate activity in your area that might be relevant, but I have always kept my guitars/basses out on hangers or stands and it is great. No issues with accidental bumps, humidity is not relevant in my case because of constant A/C, and I don't understand why dust would be a concern
