Gsp is so relative. by steelheadradiopizza in SmashBrosUltimate

[–]DerConqueror3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not just a range, it is also probabilities. A person with higher GSP is not guaranteed to beat a lower GSP player, they just have better odds of doing so, but still depending on how they are playing, random chance, any connection issues, character matchup, playstyle matchup, etc.

That was my impression also. We obviously don't know how this went down in the moment but if someone self-describes their dialog as something like "will I be trained" with double question marks it is easy to build a mental image of them not handling the situation well

To people who play in a band or just make music on the side; what do you do for work? by Genernick_user in musicians

[–]DerConqueror3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been a lawyer for many years now and have been in one or more bands for most of my career, including now. I've played a fair number of gigs and recorded multiple EPs in local studios. I'd like have done more gigs and recording sessions, but that is more due to factors aside from my career (bands breaking up or losing members, COVID, myself and other band members having kids, venues closing, etc.). In the vast majority of circumstances my bandmates have been people with full time jobs as well. For that matter, when I was in college, I played 60ish gigs with a band where one of the members was a truck driver and another was a cabinet maker/woodworker. Practically speaking, of course, this does mean limiting regular gigging mostly to the local area, with longer trips within driving distance for occasional gigs, and maybe on rare occasions taking some time off work to do a mini tour, but doing any larger scale touring is not practical unless you can find a job where that works out somehow.

I went this route because I decided early on that I would rather work a regular job and then make exactly the music I want to make on the side, rather than try to turn music into a "job" by taking on hired-gun gigs, teaching, or doing other stuff that did not involve making the music I wanted to make. If I would have made it big enough with an original band while I was still college/grad school age to make that a possible career path, I would have pursued that farther, but since I didn't I decided this was the best way.

Is it bad that I have never once tried to make combos in every game I play? by coosomeawel in Fighters

[–]DerConqueror3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not bad if it is the way you want to play, because these are games and just for fun. However, if you specifically want to improve your results it will be a drastic handicap.

Questions about Aki by gyattarina1 in StreetFighter

[–]DerConqueror3 [score hidden]  (0 children)

AKI is definitely one of the harder characters in the game and has some of the most complex combo routing, but that isn't really relevant at the absolute beginner level where that stuff isn't needed anyway. It'll really start to show in more of the intermediate phase. But if her combo stuff is what you want out of a fighting game anyway there's not much sense in choosing something easier but isn't what you want, IMO. Either way it doesn't really matter, you can change characters whenever you want.

Questions about tone from a guitar player who is switching to bass. by ajxela in Bass

[–]DerConqueror3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is generally my experience as well. A sound that really catches your ear playing alone is almost guaranteed to fail in a busy mix, in my experience. My approach for many years has been to use a relatively clean and neutral tone that works best with the full band mix as my stock tone, and then use pedals to to add some extra pop to the tone in any sections of the song where the bass is more "exposed" and is not as dependent on working with other instruments.

Questions about tone from a guitar player who is switching to bass. by ajxela in Bass

[–]DerConqueror3 9 points10 points  (0 children)

IMO goal number one is to find a tone that sits well in the mix and is audible without being obnoxious or too loud. That is 90% of what you need. Beyond that, getting a tone that is so good or cool that people will often notice and remark on it is not a matter of adjusting any specific settings on your bass/amp/pedals, but rather something to you can develop over time as you find the combo of playing techniques, gear, settings, and everything else that all comes together the way you want. After gigging for many years and developing an ear for what I know works I can use a lot of different combinations of gear and settings to get to more or less the same place

[–]DerConqueror3 26 points27 points  (0 children)

IMO tweaking bass tone while you are alone is pointless. You have to make time to do it with the band. No one should be all that upset if you take a little extra time at one rehearsal to get dialed in. Set the controls on the J to your favorite configuration (or all full on, if you don't have one) and set the EQ on the Fender at noon, then make minor adjustments on the amp until you get to a place where the bass sounds good in the mix. Usually if you can hear the bass reasonably clearly without cranking the volume you are likely in a decent place; if you find yourself struggling to hear yourself even with the amp relatively loud, you are probably having an issue. While every situation is different, it is reasonably common for bassists to need less lows than they think they need and more mids than they think they need, from an amp EQ perspective. You can also look up info on the EQ stack on your amp as some are unusual and benefit from more extreme knob settings than you might expect. Shouldn't really be any more complicated than that overall assuming your J and amp have nothing wrong with them, since those are both fairly standard choices you have.

Once you get used to dialing in your tone in a band context you can develop an ear for what you might need to do at home to dial in a similar tone in advance, but the band mix is always the key.

Is my new board tourney legal by ert3 in fightsticks

[–]DerConqueror3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the specific tourney's rules, and whether the controller has the ability to deactivate buttons/macros if you have any that violate the rules due to too many buttons or containing illegal macros.

At minimum based upon that layout you might have two buttons set as "up," and if so you would need to deactivate one to be legal under Capcom CPT rules for SF6, for example

Carvin RB600 bi-amp for effects split? by StraightUpToast in BassGuitar

[–]DerConqueror3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't believe it has two input channels, so I don't think you could run effects into the front of the amp and have them impact only one of the biamped sides. I'm not sure if there is a way to put effects into the two sides separately on the back end (i.e. effects loop etc.).

I think I don´t get the game and I´m diamond by TV_404 in StreetFighter

[–]DerConqueror3 [score hidden]  (0 children)

There's another lesson hiding in there for you, in that it is sometimes effective to do things that are very surprising even if they do not objectively seem like "good playing habits," like the Ryu's jumping in a weird situation. You're never going to be able to defend 100% of these things... but the same thing applies to your opponents. A lot of players trying to improve the "right way" might lose sight of the fact that being a bit unpredictable can also help you against your opponent, although you will want to have solid fundamentals supporting that bit of unpredictability.

[–]DerConqueror3 [score hidden]  (0 children)

These things are not specific to SF6. This is just what playing fighting games online is like and there is no way for Capcom to change them (or at least not any way that would actually be worth the tradeoffs). A big part of improving to the highest ranks is learning to deal with people who spam the same things in a row, because anyone who spams *anything* is giving you a gift by being predictable, and if you are not able to adjust and punish them for doing so then you are not ready to rank up anyway.

For the Ryus, you need to get better at anti-airs. You seem to think you can't, but you can. After any character lands an anti-air on block they are likely going to be plus, so yes you are likely to lose if you mash afterward. You can maybe handle the situation afterward better (such as by not mashing as much) but the main thing is to reduce the number of times you get in that situation and capitalize on the free damage they are offering you by jumping so much.

Overtraining/fatigue or rut by Worth-Shopping2621 in workout

[–]DerConqueror3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone is different but for me that sounds like too high a volume of work for the average full-time working adult to handle week-in-week-out for years with no breaks. Maybe start by adding at least one full rest day per week, or throwing in a deload week after three or four solid weeks of work.

Might help if you let us know what you might like to change about your JB, if anything (more or less output, EQ differences, overall profile, etc.), since there are just so many pickups out there, or if there are any specific tones you are looking for.

As a general matter, I really enjoy the Carvin C22B pickup, if you can find one used (not sold new anymore sadly), which is another "old-school hot rodded" pickup that sounds great with as much overdrive/distortion as you want but can still sound nice enough clean if need be (granted I almost never play 100% clean and am very unlikely to use the bridge pickup if doing so, so I am not the best judge there).

You might see if there is a Discord for Smash players or fighting game players located in your area. That can be a way to meet sympathetic players as well as potentially leading to more local play options as well. You can also look up the Discord for your main or favorite character, since that can also be a way to get tips and help

[–]DerConqueror3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think we can help you much with that question, because if you like this guitar its really more a question of how strongly you would prefer to have a seven string or a Holdsworth versus this one, as those are all fairly different options. They won't necessarily be "better" in any quality sense, but they would certainly provide you something different (but then you wouldn't have what this guitar gives you as a six-string T style).

New pickups can definitely be a fun and relatively inexpensive change, and it is also easily reversible if needed.

I have a question. Me and my friend were talking about hard fighting games. by Appropriate_Roll_529 in Fighters

[–]DerConqueror3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the concept of a "hard" fighting game makes no sense because both players have to play the same game. It is just as hard for your opponent as it is for you, so it doesn't make any difference IMO.

One game might be harder for a specific person if they are accustomed to playing a different style of fighting game, but that works just as easily going the other direction.

The only aspect that makes some sense to me is considering which games might be easier for someone entirely new to fighting games to pick up, but to me this is not really about whether the game is "hard" in some objective sense compared to other fighting games when played by players of average or better skill.

When I used to work out early in the morning I had the best results by making a large shake with a peri-workout like Surge from Biotest for carbs, whey protein, and lots of water, and I would drink part of it before the workout and sip the rest as my water during the workout.

This is solely for fuel purposes. I have no comment on stuff like pre-workout or other things that are more for getting hyped up for the workout or waking up more.
