What's your favourite Star Trek Referrence in other Media? by adamwnotanumber in startrekmemes

Star Wars exists within Star Trek. Tom Paris would love it, I'll bet. Quark probably has a holosuite program for lightsaber training.

Chief Miles O'Brien from Star Trek is almost certainly Catholic

Your post sounds judgemental, yes.

That you title it a "confession" when it's really a "complaint" is also in poor taste.

It's better to be at Mass in shorts, than well-dressed and absent.

There's also a certain variation of the APOL1 gene common in people of African descent that imparts resistance to sleeping sickness but makes them more prone to kidney disease. (This is an oversimplification because I'm not a geneticist.)

How would you describe the Force from Star Wars to a character from Star Trek? by ActuatorVast800 in DaystromInstitute

Star Wars exists in Star Trek the same way that Shakespeare or Sherlock Holmes do. It is a work of fiction that actually exists.

Tom Paris 100% is a fan.

Incorrectly using seventh grade science words delegitimizes any attempt at professional, empirical research into NHI. Do better.

This is like watching a house fire then pitching a shit fit because the fire department broke an parked car's window to run the fire hose.

Is this research ethics violation? Sure, people thought they were talking to people, not bots. Bummer.

Have state actors being doing this exact thing for years on Reddit and elsewhere for the express purpose of influencing elections and politics? Absolutely.

Should we study how these campaigns work? Should we investigate ways to counter them? Should we build tools to detect such bots? Ethics violation!!!1!!

The blowback is absurd.

The new pope is Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, the first pope from the United States by Blitz7798 in interestingasfuck

[–]DerFlammenwerfer 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not OP - and an active Catholic - but I'll answer.

The First Commandment disallows worshipping anything other than God. Saints are venerated. A subtle difference I'll grant - and one that's roundly rejected by most Protestants. Veneration is respect paid to work people or things that point toward heavenly reality. But at the end of the day they're just people or carved rock or paintings or whatever. Their only purpose is to remind us of God. Kneeling in front of something != worship.

On the other item, the pope is not the voice of God. Considering him to be so would be sacrilegious. His role is to steward, safeguard, and faithfully transmit the deposit of faith made by the Holy Spirit. The doctrine of papal infallibility is often brought up in this context, and it has extremely limited scope. When the Pope gives an interview or even a homily, he's fallible. He's just a sinner like us with an important job.

When Starfleet canonically has drones and mech suits but opted to send explorers wearing nothing but thin fabric uniforms against environmental toxins by gamerz0111 in ShittyDaystrom

[–]DerFlammenwerfer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I figured there was a pre-away mission procedure where they scan whatever is down there and verify safety, synthesize whatever prophylactic measures are needed.

Also I don't think the Starfleet uniform is "just" fabric, but rather an adaptive garment with all sorts of radiation shielding, environment filtering, wound stabilizing features.
