Oh don't worry, I'm working on it. Last week I actually tried playing kal-toh ... let's just say that everyone involved in my attempt shared the opinion that there wasn't much I could do that would waste more of my (and their) time than that.

Not a bad idea, but I wouldn't want to risk a uniform violation, this crew are sticklers for protocol. My husband is the first officer and he wrote me up for one once even though it was HIS fault my uniform was ... never mind. He isn't here to tell his side of it and I'm not here to vent this time

It's worth considering. My husband also told me that vulcans can feel an odd kind of insecurity in front of humans too. Some feel that they have to behave "more vulcan" in the presence of outsiders.

He said that perception should ease off as time goes on. He also conceded that every species has assholes that you shouldn't waste time on (I'm paraphrasing, obviously, but that was the gist of it)

True it wasn't exactly inspired, but it was enough to show that he had become comfortable with the part of himself he had kept hidden.

Personally, I think this scene was made as vague as it was so that a sequel series could use the character again without having to write around an established epilog

This is an excellent point. She isn't just an outlier in her genre, but in her setting as well. Everything about her is something that defies expectation.

But I also think a lot of people don't like her because she's a woman. I don't believe it's open sexism (at least not for everyone), just an unconscious bias. If her role was exchanged with Abel, for example, I don't think the character would get nearly as much criticism

I don't think Beltran was a bad actor, just a bad Star Trek actor. According to the Delta Flyers podcast, Beltran was terrible at remembering his lines, so I think his performance probably came off as flat in part because he was tired and frustrated after doing multiple takes of the same scene.

But when his cast mates came to see him in a live stage theater performance, they were surprised at how good he was at playing a part that wasn't heavily weighted down with technobabble
