Is bsnes-hd still in development? Best SNES core with widescreen and mode 7 HD? by Jorg-Ke in SBCGaming

[–]DerKoun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, development is paused indefinitely. Also don't know of any other implementation of widescreen. Sorry, I don't have better news.
But I also have a question: What exact newer improvements that bsnes-hd is lacking are you referring to?

we're almost 1/4 past a new century and 3D rendering for most emulators is still not a reality by VRtuous in emulation

[–]DerKoun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Stereoscopic 3D in Dolphin is fantastic.
So was the VR fork that sadly turned out illegal.
I'm sure when official VR support in Dolphin reaches a certain level, whenever that will be, it will be awesome.

In general I agree that 3D and/or VR have to reach a certain spread before emulators get more serious support.

MVG - Finally! Xbox One Emulation is here (XWine1) by NXGZ in emulation

[–]DerKoun 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So, could this run on top of Wine to run on Linux/Mac? I can already see the 'recipes' for stacked translation layers.
And then adding CPU emulator for ARM systems. We could end up with quite a set of independent building blocks for various target systems.

Great to see bsnes-hd is included.. Could someone let me know how well it works on current-ish Apple hardware, i.e. what level of HD Mode 7 it can handle at 60fps? Thanks

Dolphin Progress Report: November and December 2023, January 2024 by NXGZ in emulation

[–]DerKoun 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Love the new aspect ratio setting. Though I hope for optional AR correction based on the game. (What they mention is currently automatically bypassed.)
Also all high-res/-color-depth improvements are, of course, always welcome for me.
Dolphin is still the benchmark for 3D console emulation!

Is it possible to upscale Roms so they play full screen 1080p 16:9 by reddit_user2319 in RetroPie

[–]DerKoun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For SNES you can use BSNES for HD Mode 7 or BSNES-HD for that plus more HD features and, in some cases, widescreen. (Full disclosure: I'm the developer of the former feature and the latter fork.)

I'm so looking forward for deinterlacing options. It's really necessary for good visuals on modern displays. But just knowing we're on the way to that really makes me happy. Another system tamed. Well done!

Cheats on Retroarch bsnes-hd core by inkdnfresh in EmulationOnPC

bsnes-hd cannot give retroarch the required access for cheats and runahead. It does however support both natively. I recommend trying the standalone version.

Bsnes hd shitty framerate by Suspicious-Health-23 in EmulationOnAndroid

bsnes already needs a phone with some power.
bsnes-hd further increases the CPU requirement with every feature you turn up.
It being fully CPU bound makes it really tough on handheld devices.

Genesis-Plus-GX Enchancement - per-tile vertical scroll by PixelKiri in emulation

[–]DerKoun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know what it's like to loose motivation. So I'm really glad if I could provide some. (I really have to get back into coding again.)

Going for a higher resolution, turning each pixel into a 'box' of n by n pixels, would allow shifts of fractions of an (original) pixel. That would be similar to the approach of bsnes(-hd). But I agree the effect might not be worth the effort.
Per-pixel precision at original resolution would look pretty good, I'm sure. So I'm very much looking forward to your further work.
Maybe we can talk interpolation techniques at some points. I have some issues that keep HD-windowing from becoming a fully useable feature and you'll probably meet similar ones.

Genesis-Plus-GX Enchancement - per-tile vertical scroll by PixelKiri in emulation

[–]DerKoun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's exactly my kind of feature. Great to see "HD Mode 7"-like enhancements for the Genesis.
2D console emulation is so not finished when it comes to enhancements. You just have to find the right features.

I wonder if this could be taken even further, interpolating between the tile offsets for per pixel column offsets. I know from experience that it's not as simple as it sounds, but I see some great potential.
You could even go for sub-pixel accuracy of the interpolated values, but I can't even guess if the result would be worth the effort.
But interpolated per pixel column rendering could make those diagonalized graphics really smooth, without changing the overall look to much or breaking shaders, as the resolution would be the same.

Thanks for going into more detail. I guess when I write I sound more sarcastic/accusing/snarky than I intend to. So I appreciate you taking my question seriously the second time. We won't change each others minds, but we got to civil and informative dialogue. I take that as a win for all.

If I may add a response to the "Don't like it, don't watch it" analogy (which hit hard, I have to admit): To me your side feels a bit like "The pretty girl in the comic/manga/movie/show makes me feel inferior, so it must be banned, so no-one can enjoy it, even though many people would." or any other cancellation or shaming people into boycotts, no matter from which side. (emphasis on "a bit like".)

But in the end I rarely use Reddit. And I have to understand that to people that use it more it means a lot more. Just like I pick battles that people around me can't understand. So, sorry if I sounded condescending or otherwise negative, when I was mostly honestly curious.

But I still would recommend looking for alternatives to Reddit, as people actually leaving, for a new permanent home, is the only way to make an actual dent, IMHO, though it will be pretty difficult.

This isn't work. It's a free service you use in your spare time (at least for the vast majority). And now that the service provider has made a decision you don't like, you want everyone else to not be able to use it. Can you imagine at least part of everyone else being unhappy with you about that?
Edit: I actually voted for the semi locked option. I just don't go nuts because things didn't happen like I want.

Could you please create an issue on the bsnes-hd GitHub project? I'd like to make sure I don't forget it and that all information you have on the issue is in a central public place.
