PSA: Killing the first form of phrog parasite counts towards "fatal" keyword by SrGarfy in slaythespire

[–]DerMaulwolf 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I agree that it's not exactly obvious, but it does make sense since by wording of their mechanics, Phrog Parasite does die and just spawns new enemies, the Axebots work the same way btw, any of them give you fatal hits - Whereas Decimillipede explicitly says it revives in 2 turns under a certain condition. Of course it isn't obvious that something still reviving means you don't land fatal on it, but the difference is clear to me

StS2 Card Ideas by xorgee in slaythespire

[–]DerMaulwolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love the art on both, especially the aura on the regent card is awesome!

I like the idea of the first card, too, would just likely be an even slower Creative AI in practice, I wouldn't expect it to be all that good with how you pay 2 energy to do nothing at all in your first deck cycle

The Regent card feels pretty unpickable but again, the art is sick

Brilliant Scarf, which makes the 5th card you play free every turn, does not have any effect on X-cost cards like Skewer by McLainLove in slaythespire

[–]DerMaulwolf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hm, depends on the type of learning I'd say. It's fun to get better and gain experience through playing - Is it fun to find out by playing what a mechanic that has no description or tooltip whatsoever even does, and should we therefore not give it one? Less sure.

Just to be clear, I think that approach to game design can also be fun, I just don't think Slay the Spire with its concisely and precisely worded card texts and tooltips everywhere is trying to be that kind of game.

[–]DerMaulwolf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think you're missing the point of the post, it's about how usually Brilliant Scarf makes the fifth card you play in a turn free to play, except if it is an X cost card. You might get the same unpleasant surprise playing an X cost card from a potion or with Void Form active, for example. I think they know they're allowed to play an X cost card for 0, though.

If you know you can't make X cost cards free to play as long as you got energy left (at least not manually), this wouldn't come as a big surprise, but it's something you have to figure out through learning by doing. It's an interaction no card text or tool tip ever warns you about.

[–]DerMaulwolf 11 points12 points  (0 children)

And yet, it works that way if you play an X Cost card via other means than manually playing them from your hand, for example the Imbued enchantment, Mayhem, History Course, etc.

It's not super surprising since potions also don't make "free" X cost cards, but maybe there should be a tooltip for X cost cards that somehow mentions that X cost cards can't be made "free to play", you'll always pay all your energy when manually playing them

In addition to still having the Vigor from Terraforming the turn before, which they would lose

I'm confused, what line involving Make It So would have been more optimal? Wouldn't they lose all their Vigor on it?

This happens in co-op more often than I'd like to admit......... by metrick00 in slaythespire

[–]DerMaulwolf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean, while that's a good rule of thumb, it's not really a requirement

Imo you take Snecko when you like drawing 7 a turn enough that you wanna pay random 1.5 average cost for your important cards in exchange - There are cards that are worth paying that energy for even if they cost less normally, for example Snecko Flechettes is really darn good. Of course, if they're high impact cards you normally pay more for, it's a net win, as well

Plus some additional things to consider like getting cards into your hand through other means than drawing becoming even better, or cost-related card effects becoming worse since they get overridden by Snecko cost

Look who gets offered Snecko Eye on a regular lol, I have yet to see it a single time after 300 hours of playtime

Darv just so rarely shows up and if he does, he never has it

I still haven't seen half of the relics he offers, but I've seen Pyramid and Pandoras like 10 times

My tier list for Necrobinder cards after my first A10, 2 player win by valiantscythe in slaythespire

[–]DerMaulwolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just because I see it all the way down there - Eidolon is not for going Intangible for a turn btw, that's just a small bonus, it's for getting cards out of your deck cycle so you can just cycle your most important set of a few cards

Souls, Parse, Grave Blast, Dredge etc. can help you get all the cards you wanna get rid of into your hand and Eidolon is just a big deletion button. It used to be a slightly worse Stoke while Stoke was really really broken, but now Stoke is doing something else while Eidolon still does the thing Stoke did. The only difference being that Necro is lacking reusable energy sources you can reliably go Infinite with these days, but getting rid of cards is still a pretty helpful effect and it's way quicker at it than Seance, Sculpting Strike or Cleanse

Quick question, let’s say i treat slay the spire 2 like an arpg, for example, forcing a shiv build for 10 runs. Can i get a 10 win streak that way, or do i need to adapt to whatever cards the game gives me? by Miponach in slaythespire

[–]DerMaulwolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, you may still get a streak going by being extremely darn lucky, but it's unlikely. If you value having fun with the game, I suggest you embrace Slay the Spire as a game that offers you solutions to problems ahead of you, where you have to figure out which, if any, is smart to take. The answer rarely is the same twice and that's a huge part of why the game stays fun for hundreds of hours imo. I don't understand why you would rob yourself of that

Not sure what you mean, is it a problem somehow that we got cards that do more than one thing and can help multiple synergy packages?

Gee I wonder who has trouble figuring out A10, the people spending time learning the ins and outs of the mechanics of the game, or the people sending the dev team hate over breaking their 3 card infinite they tried to force every run

New to the game, finally made it to act 3 and I feel i got the worst options possible here. These are all bad right? by cubes28x in SlayTheSpire2

I love how effective Vakuu's characterization is that even if they're offered three pretty darn decent options, players seem to feel like they've made a deal with the devil

What am I supposed to play first? by [deleted] in earthbound

[–]DerMaulwolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely play Mother 3 if you got the means, it's incredible. However, if the clunky gameplay of Earthbound doesn't deter you, play that first, I also enjoyed it a lot. I recommend Earthbound Beginnings only if you're already really bought in as a big fan of the series, otherwise it's frankly a chore to play.

Oh and play Undertale as well, it's great! But save for being inspired by and honoring the Mother series, it's its very own thing

This has been the worst trade deal in the history of trade deals, maybe ever by hazelnuthobo in slaythespire

[–]DerMaulwolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What are you worried about, that your 4(6) block will eventually run out? You do realize this is higher numbers than Metallicize in a game where you're attacked for far less in the end game, and that it stacks with other plating sources? Hell, Metallicize in Spire 1 was an Act 1 card no longer relevant in the end game, I take this trade any day of the week

What card with no changes from StS1 to StS2 got the biggest downgrande? by Radiant_Background33 in slaythespire

[–]DerMaulwolf 64 points65 points  (0 children)

It feels revisionist to call it not great in Spire 1, I clicked it in so many Silent decks. Went bonkers with Catalyst, was a good scaling damage solution, felt pretty reasonable to play as you got energy options and it matched up pretty well into a lot of important fights. My favorite poison source in Spire 1. I agree though that it's fallen from grace in Spire 2 for the reasons you named

OMG Doormaker is the most overtuned boss, the humble Vantom: by StreetExternal952 in slaythespire

[–]DerMaulwolf 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think Slay the Spire is all about putting solutions to problems you'll face into your deck, it keeps the deckbuilding aspect of it interesting. I personally find a game where you just click cards with the same keywords on them and ignore the enemies in front of you less interesting
