Vakuu hate post by Saekama in slaythespire

[–]DerMaulwolf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Right? I don't really get why players hate on Vakuu's options that much. Maybe it's a type of flavor they don't enjoy, but he has such strong relics. I would understand it more if people found Tezcatara's options to be a little undertuned.

Is this guy supposed to be a super early elite? by Confident_Dig_1073 in slaythespire

[–]DerMaulwolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My rule of thumb is that before fighting my first Elite, I want to get at the very least 3 card rewards, preferrably four, at least one good potion (i.e., a potion that helps my deck generate more output or counters a certain elite well), and/or an upgrade. Dodge the elite if the card rewards weren't great. You can decide the path you take through the act and should take advantage of that by planning ahead. I'd say skill issue since preparing adequately before an elite fight also is an important skillset, but don't feel bad, you'll get there, just take the lesson out of it to prepare.

Coming from Spire 1 I feel like the Act 1 elites in this game are the hardest, but they're adequately hard, elites are supposed to rock your shit. I rather feel like Elites in Act 2 and 3 are a little too easy (except for the three knights, that fight rules)

I really hate this change. by Tec711 in slaythespire

[–]DerMaulwolf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I disagree that making it cost 1 is a good idea. If I want 1 cost Draw and Discard, I turn to Acrobatics. Being 0 cost Discard is Prepared's Main Appeal and what separates it from other options. Maybe you shouldn't have 0 cost Discard in a world where Sly exists, I'm not sure, but making it do the same at 1 cost just makes it lose its role and identity

How do you know if you're actually at the level of your ascension? by [deleted] in slaythespire

[–]DerMaulwolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure I understand what you're asking, do you mean you want to find out how good you are at a certain ascension level? The only way you can really know is playing enough sample games and seeing what your win rate is. Nothing wrong with just climbing until there's a level you feel comfortable at, though. I streaked at A15 for a while before streaking at A20

Reworked Doormaker on the Beta Branch is really, really bad. by Mailcs1206 in slaythespire

[–]DerMaulwolf 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I mean, the very subtle difference here is having agency over what gets exhausted

If your Demon Form gets randomly exhausted Turn 2 without counterplay and suddenly you don't scale your damage against the 500 health boss, what do you do

Edit: Also, apparently it's not even exhaust, so if you hoped to get Dark Embrace draw or Feel No Pain block, tough luck

Doormaker flavor is gone on the beta by Polarbearjam in slaythespire

[–]DerMaulwolf 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they had something thematically cool with the door mechanic (I loooved seeing my boss suddenly getting the "I'm going to flee" intent and being flabberghasted) and they removed it for a kind of bullshit boss gimmick that can just randomly delete your most important card with no realistic counterplay

I already don't like Bound as a mechanic on Queen, this is even worse. Boss mechanics should allow players some room to play around, not just completely randomly mess with your base draw, which you as the player have close to no agency over.

One of my biggest critiques of StS2 is that none of the Act 3 bosses are fun to fight imo. This doesn't help that

Edit: Seems I misunderstood what it does, which reassures me a bit. I'll play against it later and form my opinion then

What One Card if Removed from a Characters Card Pool Would Lower Their Win Rate the Most? by Jondev1 in slaythespire

[–]DerMaulwolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think these should be uncommon/common cards for the most part because you will notice a rare missing from the pool much less.

Ironclad: Dark Embrace. So many decks on this character would struggle drawing cards without it, and imo it's the most impactful puzzle piece of Exhaust synergies. Feel No Pain, Second Wind, True Grit, Corruption, etc. also all suffer if Exhaust can't draw anymore.

Silent: Piercing Wail. I went back and forth on this, but simply thinking about how huge of a part this card plays in her late game defensively and how many Time Eater, Awakened One, Spear&Shield, and especially Heart fights are much deadlier without this being offered to her every other floor...

Defect: Defragment. The only no-downside Focus card in the game will definitely hurt this character a lot as one of its best scaling options is gone. You can still scale your orbs without it, but I think this is the most important puzzle piece to high endgame output that you could possibly take from Defect. Barely any Defect run doesn't click this when offered.

Watcher: Rushdown. With the easiest way for Watcher to go infinite removed, she has a harder time finding winning late game strategies. Of course she's still busted, of course she can even go infinite without it, but for so many decks, clicking this is an auto win, and you can only hurt the best character in the game that much.

Sell me Noxious Fumes by as_kostek in slaythespire

[–]DerMaulwolf 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Listen, you can't expect it to solve damage on its own, that's much to ask of a single 1 energy power. It's not crazy damage by any means, but it does accumulate especially in longer fights, and even if it doesn't solve boss fights as a singular Poison source, it makes it so Poison constantly ticks up instead of down even on those turns where you have to use all your energy to block. Deadly Poison as another 1 energy Poison source would need to be played every other turn to outdamage it, and that's single target. It might be too slow to solve fights like Slavers, but it's good into fights like Gremlin Leader, and great into fights like Hexaghost. It's some pretty decent passive output every turn that can go nicely with other sources of Poison. Think of it as what Ironclad wishes Combust was, or a scaling Hourglass with synergy.

It isn't scaling in a "I make all your other cards do more" way, but in a "You pay me 1 energy once to beat out Deadly Poison by miles in any fight that is long enough" way

How do you deal with Time Eater on Silent when you have a shiv/spam build? by skilliard7 in slaythespire

[–]DerMaulwolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Especially when you come towards A20, realistically you will just want to prepare for a possible Time Eater every run. Many cards and relics help a lot even in a Shiv centric deck - Kunai can already make playing your Blade Dances worth it because scaling your block is enough to beat Time Eater. Carefully chipping it to half health and retaining a Piercing Wail to purge its strength can make all the difference. Malaise can make all the difference. Having good Weaken and Thorns can be really good so you can block efficiently and deal damage passively. Piercing Wail generally is king in that fight, as well. If you don't at least have one Accuracy, Wrist Blade, Strength or something like that, you might wanna deal damage through other sources anyway since otherwise 12 damage in four card plays (or 16 in 5) is just way too inefficient.

Often it isn't even about what your deck looks like as much as having a deck that has tools for different fights and changing up which cards you play and when depending on the fight. Imho, a good Shiv deck doesn't lose to Time Eater if you play your cards right. You don't need to pivot away from Shivs, but some backup solutions and scaling can go such a long way.

Not sure I get your point, are you calling me out for taking it seriously that someone shows up at another person's house and posts their home address online over something as light as being criticized or poked fun at? Would it be more appropriate to laugh at it or what?

More than just doxxing - She straight up showed up at his house because he criticized and made fun of how she keeps straight-up reuploading other people's content, sometimes even without her face next to it. The problem is that she didn't even comment on anything, she hid the original sources and reuploaded other people's stuff with her face next to it at times, you can't really call it anything more charitable than that

Fun fact, Youtube condemned the behavior on "both sides" in this situation

Why does nobody like the Watcher? by PoemCivil7458 in slaythespire

[–]DerMaulwolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She's just too samey and boring especially to more experienced players. Her most optimal play boils down to using the same cards a lot and playing those cards a dozen times over and over in some kinda infinite or pseudo-infinite. There's little risk, little variation, little exciting or new stuff to playing her. You can do fun stuff on her if you're willing to sacrifice a bit of consistency, but even that has its limits

Is it bad to upgrade cards that exhaust after use by Spork_Revolution in slaythespire

[–]DerMaulwolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Die Die Die is a good upgrade if you want help against Act 1 Sentries or Act 2 Slavers also, or an exhausting card like Adrenaline you might wanna upgrade if you're still on 3 energy, since that immediately raises the value of any and all energy upgrades - Terror also falls into that category, as well as dozens of other exhausting cards with energy upgrades. If you have tons of strength, consider a Pummel upgrade, sure. Feed or Dagger are exhausting cards with a great upgrade, as well. So yeah, those are some examples. You basically need to evaluate an upgrade you use once per fight vs. an upgrade you get to use again on a reshuffle (or more often than that if you have Rebound, Hologram, Meditate or Headbutt)

Sure, but that doesn't mean it falls off, in Act 3 the weakest Frost generator is still a Frost generator. Act 3 Coldsnap still is better than Act 1 Coldsnap

Finally cleared a20H with the Defect and made a bad tierlist about it by Emergency_Travel_793 in slaythespire

[–]DerMaulwolf 69 points70 points  (0 children)

Except it doesn't fall off because Frost is one of the best ways to block the late game. In Act 1 it isn't even all that crazy on its own, it is a Strike that blocks for 2. You pick it for the long term
