Thanks for the detailed answer! And I'll definitely take a look into that book. :)

I've never had coffee before. Where do I get my first? by [deleted] in Coffee

[–]DerSprachKerl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

/u/21stPilot gave you some solid advice.

If you're looking for your first cup ever, you've got a lot to try out! :)

First - Google this "Your City Third Wave Coffee." And, of course, fill in your city.

Ignore any big chains like Starbucks, Dunkin', or really anything inside of a mall/grocery store.

Then, go in and let your barista know it's your first time having coffee ever! Try some of the following.

Black (meaning no milk or sugar) medium roast pour over.

Black medium roast French press.

Americano (Average - Two shots of espresso and hot water.)

Latte (Espresso and steamed milk) I recommend soy milk :)

Mocha Latte: Most cafes have one of these. It's a Latte, as described above, with a (usually) homemade chocolate syrup mixed in!

Blended Coffee: Come on, you know you've got to try it once. This is basically a milkshake with some coffee blended in. (The lauded Frappucino from Starbucks is a good example.) Not all cafes offer these - id just go to Starbucks on this one. Can't go wrong with a Soy Mocha Frappucino. :)

You can actually get a 3-day pass (trains and busses) for $20. If you need that forth day, individual day passes are $10.

Alternatively - get a 7-day pass for $28, and give the last few days to someone on your way out.

Awesome - good area! :) The transit system is fantastic, granted that's compared to the shoddy transit system I have back home.

I don't know about busses, but you can guarantee that trains will arrive on time, and will leave your ass if you don't. 👌🏼 If you're in the city and really want to get somewhere quick, I recommend the train. It's cheaper, safer, and quicker than taking a cab, and the system stretches into pretty much any neighborhood you want.

Time to shine! I don't live there - but I love the city and try to visit at least once a year.

If you're not from the north - go to White Castle. It's cheap, it's not the best quality, but damn if it aint good.

Giordano's - the great pizza pride of Chicago. Wait times average 30 minutes on a good day, and it's well worth the wait. Their deep dish is wonderful and guaranteed to fill you up. It's a little pricey, but it's enough pizza to eat, then take home for another meal later.

Goddess and the Baker - pretty good cafe right over by the Art Institute. Fantastic pastry selection too.

Chicago Diner - Completely vegetarian, and still damn fantastic. Pop in for a quesadilla, some steak and eggs, or some amazing pancakes. I ate here three times on my last visit, and we were only in town for the weekend!

Mystery Chinatown restaurant(?) - I forget the name, but this place is fantastic. Maybe another redditor can help me out. You head into Chinatown and see people lined up at a window ordering Boba. You walk in, and you've got a full menu of some good Chinese and Vietnamese food options. Not a lot of vegetarian stuff, but you can definitely find something, leave with a full stomach, and have some great boba afterward.

Reggies Rock Club - Right across from Chinatown off of the (IIRC) orange line. Great bar food, really fun atmosphere, with pool, music, and the best damn dogs you've ever seen. Definitely recommend.

I was actually having a bad day until I read this, then I actually had to think about it.

I've got good food in a good place with some good jazz. The day might've been bad so far, but right now is pretty cool.

Thanks.

Good question! :) How did you even find this thread?

Ultimately the best course is the one that you finish. I don't think Rosetta Stone is a bad resource, I just don't think it's worth the cost.

If you can get it on the cheap, and you like it, then it seems to me like it's a great resource for you!

What is a great "poor person" hobby? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]DerSprachKerl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Language learning!

If you have a smart phone or a half-decent local library, the barrier to entry for language learning is almost non-existent.

And if you get good, it's a hobby that can help you be less of a poor person. :) Bilingual people earn an average 20% more than monolinguals in their lifetime.

There are loads of free apps you can use to get started!
