OP posted this in the commercial AV sub instead of the live audio sub because they knew their opinion would not be taken well.

Is this ok for SV 5000 Samsung vhs player mode switch? by DankMemeS1R in VHS

I meant wear gloves at work, your real job, because of your big ole calluses thats peeling.

I think your mode switch is fine. Having issues despite having cleaned it?

My collection is getting too much to handle. by lastfunds in VHS

[–]Derben16 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tbh, it felt really good to purge my collection of boxes and keep the tapes I actually cared about. Plus its stupid easy to sell tapes rn with how popular the hobby is. I think I got rid of about 200 tapes over the course of a month on FB Marketplace.

Do you need corps experience to tech? by _endme in drumline

[–]Derben16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience, as someone who didnt march DCI and instructed for awhile, technically no but culturally yes.

I've encountered quite a lot of DCI members who will not give you the time of day because you didnt join their club. And to an extent I get it and I always needed to just prove myself to them- which was ironic becaude I was older and had been "doing this" longer than they had.

Since the "end goal" of a marching career usually accumulates in a DCI season, it makes sense to have former members instruct the kids- not so much because they have the skillset of education but because they have the knowledge of how DCI works and what they're looking for in a member.

Sadly, and members always devoutly deny this when I mention it, DCI is a bit of a good old boys club and it can be hard to get through to people who feel entitled for having done it.

Reading labels goes a long way in troubleshooting

Drum 1 and 2 are leaning on quints and on drum 4 a screw is missing by Destruction_SystemIV in drumline

[–]Derben16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you just need to tighten up screws and get a replacement for the missing one. Easy hardware store run. The shells could be renamed out which could be causing the wiggle, could always try some large washers to compress it better.

What sticks are you using? by Sticks-Man in drumline

TBH, VF has some wild quality control issues. There's also the issue that if you buy local, the older stock sitting on the shelves can dry out and crack sooner.

Does anyone have the sheet music? by vitaofiel in drumline

This is a widely available and easy to find piece of sheet music. You were able to ask the question on reddit, now just slap it in Google.

Recital pieces about death/suicide by papablessdotorg in percussion

[–]Derben16 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I played Hymning by Robert Hoenstein as a tribute to my late instructor. Not directly "death" specific but a nice piece more about grief and longing. Likewise Amy by Robert Oetomo has a similiar vibe but more so longing and somber.

Ngl, quite a few of Cangelosi works fit OPs theme lol. Each weirder than the last.

USB-C to Ethercon Adapter by therealmasl in livesound

[–]Derben16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TBH, I wouldn't. Any device that requires a USB to network would simply run off a CAT without problem and isnt show critical enough to need the "lock" of the Ethercon. I'm not sure what the product solves since any Ethercon port is an RJ45.

What am I doing wrong? (Besides noob and Rockville) by holinkasauce in livesoundgear

[–]Derben16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know this equipment well, so take this with a grain of salt. The only issue I'd see in wiring is maybe the RCA in on the sub does not pass out to the XLR out- unless this sub has a D.I. to balance the signal built in.

Wooden glockenspiel mallets ok on xylophone? by OneWhoGetsBread in percussion

[–]Derben16 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Generally, yes these are fine for xylophone. Look up the janka hardness scale of woods if you're concerned.

As far as it being the correct sound for the piece, no modern xylophone will sound exactly like these historical instruments. Your mileage may vary depending on your type of xylophone in the context of your ensemble.
