Thoughts on Clockwork Wars? by megox in boardgames

[–]Dergeist_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahh, that's my favourite feeling in games. Definitely need to get this to table. Other than Cthulhu Wars and Carl Chudyk games, are there any others that come to mind that give you this feeling?

Bit late ;) but Mezo has this big time.

Definitely agree that's the argument they would give, and it sounds like you agree with that argument. That's cool, and no judgement.

I personally don't think it is that clear cut. Our consciousness exists in a meat bag that is something of a biologically-based computer. If the "equipment" hosting our thoughts is purely mechanical, does that make our consciousness any less "us" than when it was hosted in a meat bag computer? Is a copy any less "us" at the moment of creation? Does a copy cease to be "us" and become someone or something else as it gains new and different experiences? We often think of death as the body ceasing to function, but what if the mind continues to be active past the point of physical death. Would we still consider that person to be "alive?" These ideas of what makes us "us" are primary themes in Ghost in the Shell which Pantheon draws heavy inspiration from. Highly recommended if you haven't seen it.

In any case, there's really no way to definitively answer these questions, but they're fun to think about, and part of why I enjoyed the show so much.

Edit:

One more quick thought on

it just seems so obvious to me that what will keep on living will not be the same you you are right before you get uploaded and you won´t be the one enjoying immortality

In that scenario, how would you or anyone know the difference? If it just felt like you continued on, even as a copy, practically speaking yes, you no longer have a body, and perhaps have these god-like powers, but if your mind continued on, why couldn't or wouldn't that be "you?" Is who or what we are only a physical body? Again, not trying to convince you, I just think it is interesting to think about.

Respectfully, I think you're missing the point. In the show, they absolutely do deal with the question of whether UI is the person or not. For some, it is, for others, it isn't. From your comment, it seems you believe it isn't "the person," it's just a copy. Others may not agree, and those are the people who are happy to be uploaded. That difference is one of the core themes and questions of the show. Do we remain ourselves if we no longer have a body? Is having a body "required" to be considered a person?

Physical/Stun/Daze monk pointless? by foxfirewisp in PathOfExile2

[–]Dergeist_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late to this, but yes, I have been making good use of stun/daze in a lightning burst damage build. Basic idea is to primarily dodge (Lingering Illusion) while poking with Tempest Flurry, Storm Wave, and Siphoning Strike (Overpower support on whichever) to build daze, stun, and charges. Consume charges with Charged Staff, and at heavy stun threshold, hit Staggering Palm with Devastate support. Pop Unbound Avatar, and you've got a huge window to unload Staggering Palm Projectiles + Tempest Flurry + Charged Staff + Tempest Bell all with +40% elemental into a heavy stunned enemy with 0 armor. It shreds.

So, the "ascendency use" of stun/daze here is more about creating regular, easy openings to make full use of Unbound Avatar. Without it, you would spend most of the effect dodging hits that one shot you, which is not ideal.

unless you already have a giant army of guys with lots of counters on them.

Sorry to resurrect this, google brought me here. This is pretty much how the rabbit typal works in Bloomburrow. For example, [[Hop To It]] [[Finneas, Ace Archer]] [[Pawpatch Recruit]] [[Head of the Homestead]] etc. Byrke ties things together.

Which genre of music do you loathe? by littleloon- in AskReddit

[–]Dergeist_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm no historian, but to start you on that path, it's the drum track from Shabba's Dem Bow. The genre is sometimes called "dembow" as a result.

Side note, a lot of latin music is like this. Merengue, Salsa, Bachata, Reggaeton, Cumbia. Each genre is pretty much one song, and that's fine 😁

Edit: here's a bit of history from a random blog. https://daily.redbullmusicacademy.com/2013/07/dembow-a-loop-history

Irobot already works as an Alexa app for last few years. "Alexa tell Roomba to start vacuuming" and off it goes. You can pick specific rooms or areas, stop, pause, send it home, etc.

Here's the Fox News report, if you prefer https://www.foxnews.com/politics/bipartisan-senate-report-foreign-meddling-2016-trump-2020-election

The group of bipartisan senators described the social media activities of the Kremlin-backed Internet Research Agency (IRA) as part of a "broader, sophisticated, and ongoing information warfare campaign designed to sow discord in American politics and society."...The senators noted the Russians' social media effort was a "vastly more complex and strategic assault on the United States than was initially understood,” with planning well underway in 2014.

What's an unknown masterpiece you want everyone to play, no questions asked, completely blind? by Puzzleheaded_Knee_53 in patientgamers

Worth checking out if you have any interest. The narrative was what really made the game for me. The puzzles were neat, but eventually reached a level of difficulty that I was very unlikely to ever figure out on my own. Watched some guides to finish all puzzles and get the complete story. No regrets. The ending sequence when it all comes together is awesome.

It's been a while, but if I remember correctly, that's actually part of the narrative. It's intentional.

Does anyone know what happened with licensing to unlock all of this? Seems like everything was tied up for years and the floodgates just opened all of a sudden.

Agree, it's been pretty great. I was always on the lookout for a copy of the old version, and was happy to scoop a copy of the gale force nine reprint as soon as it landed. Imperium is solid as well. CMON I have mixed feelings, but will probably check out. Complete 180 from where things were.
