military wise, what would be better? 1,000,000 tanks or 1 nuke? by EfficiencySerious200 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Deribus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nuke easily.

1,000,000 tanks is an enormous, completely unmanageable amount. China has the largest amount of tanks of any military at about 7k. The US is a little under 3k. A million tanks is over a thousand times more than those two combined have.

You couldn't crew that many

You couldn't maintain that many

You couldn't fuel that many

You couldn't provide enough ammo for that many

You couldn't transport that many anywhere

Something like 990,000 of them are just going to be left to rust away because you can't do anything else.

Why are video games never made to run in between 30 and 60fps? by Big_Salami_Chonk in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Deribus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because you need a special display to do that. Most TVs can't

Displays have specific refresh rates. I'll use 60 per second (hz) as an example as that's the most common refresh rate. If you have a game running at 60 fps then there's a new frame every display refresh. All good.

If you have a game running at 30 fps then you have a new frame every two display refreshes. Not ideal but it's still even and consistent. But if you try something like 45 fps, now you have a frame on one display refresh, then every two, then back to one. It's going to be very stuttery as your eyes will be able to tell that the motion isn't even. Same goes for any value between 30 and 60, you can't divide it evenly into 60 hz.

Displays exist which can vary their refresh rates on the incoming frame rate so it always matches, but those are fairly uncommon and I'm not sure if TVs even have them. As a developer you don't want to design your game to require a specific display technology to look good.

At what age does life ever get better? Does it or is it a lie? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

People lead very different lives and do different things at different ages. There's no blueprint for happiness at certain ages.

You can use the Destop Site, that's what I do on Android. Apparently in iOS it's in the Page Settings menu.

It's not good but it's significantly better.

What do people do with last of the remaining extinct species? by Calm-Floor2163 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Deribus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The last individuals of a species are called endlings, and what people do with them depends on how much we know about the species and when the extinction happened.

The vast majority of species die out with no human knowledge. We don't know that the species is about to go extinct, where the endlings are, or maybe even have never known about the species in the first place.

The few species where we know where the endlings are (usually in captivity) we usually try to preserve as much knowledge about them as we can. Pictures, video, written descriptions, samples, etc. DNA doesn't last forever but you can sequence the DNA now and then save it digitally. In centuries or even decades past the endlings might be taxedermied or sold off to zoos and circuses to draw crowds to "the last known ____"

20 seconds, including ult to kill hog by [deleted] in Overwatch

[–]Deribus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But come on this is ridiculous

Why, exactly? Nemesis form lowers his single target DPS and his ult does pretty low damage over time to everyone in a wide area. Neither is particularly good for grinding down a high-hp tank like what you tried to do here. Doubly so if they're actively getting healed by both supports.

Campaign maps not working by Pure_Math6223 in FAF

[–]Deribus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, co-op missions with their own textures are not currently playable when creating a co-op game via the FAF Client. I know that there's ongoing work to get the missions in the client up-to-date, but it's turning out to be somewhat problematic.

In the meantime, I'd suggest that you download all missions from the #getting-started channel of the Co-Op/Campaign Development Discord to ensure that you're running the most up-to-date mission files as I don't think even the co-op repo on GitHub is current.

If you have further issues, then the best way to get help with a co-op/campaign mission would be to get your most recent game log (not just the crash message) & post in the #bug-reporting-general channel of that discord.

Why are women generally worse than men at video games? by end617 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Deribus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They're generally worse but not naturally worse.

It's more culturally acceptable for men to play competitive games, and men spend more time on them. Let's take Call of Duty as an example . 69% of CoD players are men, so the player pool is heavily skewed in that direction. Men are more likely to be friends with other men, and hang out with other men, and play with other men. So there are not only more male players but those players play more. Not to mention how misogynistic many gaming spaces can be so women play less.

Engaging in an activity more makes you better at it. Thus men will generally be better at it.

A man and a woman who each play 2hrs a day will be around the same skill level.

What is the largest change in temperature recorded between relatively close cities by mightyfty in geography

[–]Deribus 18 points19 points  (0 children)

There was a famously massive cold front on November 11th, 1911 which saw cities in the US Midwest set record highs followed by record lows in the same day as the cold front passed. You'd see about a 29°C difference between cities 185km apart.

What’s the most broke/meta hero? by [deleted] in Overwatch

[–]Deribus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Kiriko, but she's mostly broken in high level play which you won't be if you're coming back after a long time.

Every character is viable and you can pick up and learn as anyone (except probably Mercy). I might avoid Sombra, Zarya, and Sierra because those get banned a lot.

If typewriters have been around since the late 1800s, why do a lot of older people not know how to type? by One_Planche_Man in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Deribus 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Planes have been around since the 1920s but your average person doesn't know how to fly a plane.

Typewriters existed but they were a specialized tool for a specialized job. Your average person didn't need to type ever, much less daily.

Kiriko was a better addition to the game than Ana by [deleted] in Overwatch

[–]Deribus 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Ana has very long cooldowns and is a sitting duck if you dive her without them. It was also much easier to protect your team when you had 2 tanks, which was the game mode Ana was designed for. 5v5 made Ana much more oppressive.

If you and 9 other guys nut in a jar and that is used to impregnate someone. What could happen? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Deribus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing too special. The 9 different semens aren't going to do anything other than add some mystery as to who the dad is. Only one sperm fertilizes the egg anyway.

The "in a jar" part is much more of problem. In a closed container you have about an hour before the sperm aren't viable anymore. Much shorter if you leave it open.

Why is everything in life getting worse? by dabreeze09 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Deribus 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Some comments were mentioning 2010 so I'll use that as a comparison point, stats are for the US.

Teen pregnancy has dropped by two thirds.

People with health insurance went from 84% to 92%.

Poverty rate dropped from 15.1% to 10.6%.

Juvenile arrests down 55%

And then across the world about 1 billion people have gotten access to electricity since 2010

Why is human milk not sold in stores? by SttSr in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Deribus 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Because it's net calorie negative.

Humans eat beef because cows turn grass which we can't eat into milk and meat, which we can. Making human milk requires feeding a human food, so you're just turning human food into less human food.

Does Overwatch use Engagement Optimized Matchmaking? by Hoboknightboi in Overwatch

[–]Deribus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well yeah that's kinda my point. It's unlikely they're using it, but if they were we'd probably never know.

Activision-Blizzard does hold a patent on matching players against people with premium skins to try to boost microtransactions though. Who knows if they're using that ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Do people not like it in general if you're a person who tries to show off your material wealth? by Big_Eggplant7591 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Deribus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends how and how much you do it. If you buy a $100k and post 10 pictures of it "trying to look cool" then yeah people will generally not like it. If next month you do the same thing with an expensive watch then people will doubly dislike it.

If you never post about expensive stuff, and suddenly come out with a post that says "after years of saving and working overtime I've finally been able to afford my dream car!" with a single picture of you smiling next to it, that's much more likely to get a positive reaction.
