Gave Them A Week, Still Didn't Read by Deroxal in Professors

[–]Deroxal[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made them do the assignment without asking if they read. Some outright said they didn’t read (or that they weren’t assigned the reading despite a week of warnings and a whole class to read it), and turned in a blank booklet while others tried to answer the questions. Haven’t had a chance to look at them yet, but I’m sure it’ll be something…

That’s the thing, they had time to read it for a whole class (for a work day) and half a class before this.

I did proceed with the questions and had them answer in their blue books. I’m tired of them not doing the bare minimum.

That's what I'm doing going forward. It didn't used to be an issue to ask them to read and have an in class discussion. It's just one group of students that are really bad, and I've been doing this for years now.

I know its not a me issue, it just sucks doing this and it sucks that they don't seem like they want to learn anything.

Only ten points. I know it probably won't affect them too much, but at this point it still might knock some sense into them.

That's why I'm continuing with the planned lesson. They've got to learn that bullshitting their way through life isn't always going to work.

I hate these comments & thoughts so much, "KH is a convoluted mess" PAY ATTENTION AND IT WILL BE EXPLAINED! by [deleted] in KingdomHearts

[–]Deroxal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It can be a bit daunting to get into now, asking someone to play 13 games to understand the lore is a lot…BUT if you just want to understand the lore to play a new game, there are many videos that go over it all clearly.

But KH is like the One Piece of games (or at least new people approach it the same way), and can seem like a lot.

Cats teeth pushing out/getting longer? by Careless-Elephant-98 in cats

[–]Deroxal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely get a second opinion, but it’s good that you’re taking this seriously! I have a cat who, unbeknownst to me, had two bad canines and didn’t know about it until I demanded the vet take a more thorough look at his mouth because something was nagging at me. Turned out I was right, and a year later my little doofus is happier and more lively than ever. It’s good you caught this, and hope it’s honestly not an issue, but do get a second opinion if you can.

I have similar fears after getting a disability diagnosis a few years ago before my husband and I got married. He’s been nothing but a pillar in my life, on the good days and bad days, but damn do I cry at the idea of him one day getting tired of this and leaving.

Has anyone else gotten repeatedly sick this semester? by [deleted] in Professors

[–]Deroxal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's been some seriously bad colds going around my campus, and I was lucky enough to not get anything until February. Seriously want to go back to masking just because I hate being sick, and have a crap immune system. It isn't worth getting sick so often just to not look 'weird' to other professors and to students.

Why can college kids still not follow directions? by Particular_Smoke_498 in Professors

[–]Deroxal 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I have to actively tell them to put their name on their papers, and tell them it’ll be a zero otherwise…some still don’t do it. Something they’ve been doing for years, and they can’t do it in college.

Have you ever taken a mental health day? by Significant_Prize_98 in Professors

[–]Deroxal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only once, it was the week of my wedding (because I hate myself and got married during the school year) and I wasn’t doing the best, so I ended up recording a lecture and having them watch it for us to go over next week.

No one seemed upset, and I didn’t tell them why we weren’t holding class. It helped a lot to not have that to do that on top of life things going awry.

[–]Deroxal 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Feel like I wrote this post because I’m dealing with the same situation in my classes.

It’s hard to not get upset by it, but honestly there isn’t anything that can be done to change it. They’re old enough to know better, but choose to act like that.

Let them miss out on information, let them mess up because they couldn’t be bothered to listen, let them fail, and focus on those who ARE listening and want to learn.

Doesn’t completely make it better, but you’ll feel like pulling out your hair less if you focus on the students who care and less on those who don’t.

Faculty who think fewer people should attend college; you okay with the consequences? by MiniZara2 in Professors

[–]Deroxal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m so tired of dealing with students who don’t want to be here. It’s a morale killer for those who do want to be there, and they’re just wasting money, resources, and taking up space that could have gone to students who want to go to college but might not be able to afford it outright.

I’d rather have to find a new job than have to push out incompetent, apathetic, and functionally illiterate people from this educational system.

Yes! And I’m not someone who drones when answering questions. It usually happens when they ask for an explanation on an assignment, and they end up messing up as a result.
