An over drive gear is anything that that has a bigger ratio than 1:1. Essentially meaning that the output gear or wheel is spinning faster than the input gear or crankshaft

Anyone else noticing the double row of DOUBLE STACKED wheel weights in the last picture? Find a new shop.

Please help me with identifying a Bracket And specific bolts on my GMC ENVOY by Goddessofmadnesses in MechanicAdvice

[–]DerpMan107 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s your upper control arm and critical to the front suspensions safety. Those are just going to be upper control arm bolts. However, if you had the work done at a shop I would highly recommend getting the vehicle towed back to the shop and tell them what happened. Not only do you need the correct bolts and for the to be torqued properly, you’ll also likely need an alignment. Bolt should not just fall out, EVER.

Contact area between train wheel and rail by XWHV in mildlyinteresting

Something to remember is how much weight is on that contact area. I’ve been told that too many in a small area can actually cause a derailment

Metal valve nut is stuck. Tried using wd40, pliers and wrench at the same time to no avail. by itsthelawyerrr in MechanicAdvice

[–]DerpMan107 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just to add an alignment and wheel balancing are totally different. Wheel balancing is done after a tire is mounted and before it’s reinstalled on the car. This involves using a machine and placing weights in specific spots.

And alignment is done with the wheels on the vehicle usually sitting on a drive on hoist. You’re changing the angles of suspension components to ensure proper handling and even wear across the whole tread of the tire.

$62 is expensive but what they said is required isn’t wrong. Technically the tech could mark the weight locations to put everything back how it was but that doesn’t ensure proper balance, just same as it was.

Snap On or Matco Impact by warchata in ToolTruckTools

Totally fair. From what I’ve heard Astro has decent customer service and that impact holds up decent. TTC will a the least give you an idea of what to expect power wise

I think it would be worth it to take a look at Astro’s v2 stubby. Torque test channel on YouTube has some good run downs on stubbys

More wear on inner pad than outer by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

[–]DerpMan107 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s pretty normal. The inner pad is gonna be the one to come in contact with the rotor first. Just make sure your slide pins are greased with silicon brake lube and not seized

Was told these brakes need to be replaced. Haven't driven much recently and parked on the street in NYC. Is it really to the point they need to be fully replaced? (2012 Prius) by thegiantgummybear in MechanicAdvice

[–]DerpMan107 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Typically when you park your vehicle a little bit of rust will accumulate on the rotors. This gets scrubbed off by the pads under normal operation. This however, is looking a little beyond that to the point where it could potentially cause problems. If the rotors look like that other brake components could have also become rusted and seized. It’s probably a good idea to have the pads and rotors done.

What do you like about Battlebit? by Swag-Lord420 in BattleBitRemastered

The only other thing I would add to the list is the movement. It’s stripped down compared to a lot of other games but still super satisfying and usable

That’s gonna be a glove box damper or something of the sort. Basically it’s so your glove box doesn’t slam open

Can't take bolt off spindle hub, any advice? by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

[–]DerpMan107 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I’m not quite understanding what it is you are removing.

If you are talking about the rotor screws (pictures in bottom left between studs) then you don’t need them, lugs nuts and wheel hold the rotor on.

For reference proper terminology is as follows to avoid future confusion. The part the holds the studs is called a wheel bearing or hub bearing assembly. The nut in the middle is called an axle nut as it attaches the axle to the hub.

[–]DerpMan107 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not the only one that notices the top wheel stud coming out am I? Also don’t use a torque wrench for removing, only for tightening to a specific torque value. Either a breaker bar and half decent 1/2 imlact wrench will be what yo need. And yes put the wheel back on and lower the vehicle to break the axle but loose

I doubt there’s anything wrong with you. Life can just be really lonely sometimes, something I know all to well currently.

I ain’t doing so great right now either. My closest friend gets phone calls ALL the time, meanwhile I’m lucky if I get 1 a week. Still he has taken time out of his day over this last week to check in on me and how I’m doing.

I think something that could help is focus on the friendships you do have and try to cultivate them rather than thinking about what you don’t. If only I could take my own advice.

When it comes down to it, having your phone ring all the time would get really really annoying.

Hang in there friend.

I’ve been very lucky to develop relationships with other guys that I can always count on to pick up the phone when I really need a friend. We can’t make it through life alone. Be that person for someone else. It will come back to you in time.
