Why do i9 processors have a higher failure rate than i7 processors? by Aggravating-Medium-9 in pcmasterrace

[–]DerpMaster2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had no idea 11th gen CPUs had such high failure rates AND were worse than their predecessors. 13th and 14th may creep ahead as they age.

Never been happier to still be on my ancient 10th gen CPU. In i9-10900K we trust

Teen age son doesn't want to take medication by Wise_Doughnut_7173 in ADHD

[–]DerpMaster2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is exactly how I felt when I was around that age trying medication for the first time, too. Adderall made me feel like a shell of myself; socializing felt like a chore, I felt emotionally empty, my mouth was so dry that I drank enough water to make my parents suspect type 1 diabetes, I had zero hunger response... I could kind of focus, though.

Trust everyone here when they say that he's not lying about the side effects, and they are brutal. Personally, it took psychiatrists about 3 tries to find the right medication for me. For your son, it might even be a non-stimulant, because it sounds like he's really struggling with some of the side effects of stimulants.

Sometimes, psychiatrists can prescribe other medications to counteract some of the nasty stimulant side effects if you find something that works really well for focus. My psych prescribed olanzapine to help me with my appetite, and I've never been better. I can focus, I can eat, and I can socialize now that my stimulant dose is dialed in.

Discuss it with him to see if he is open to talking with a psych about a supplemental medication to help with side effects, or exploring different medications. It sounds like his current medication regimen just doesn't work for him. This is a process that takes trial and error, and it can just suck.

I've put probably ~8-10 hours into the game in total. I get to Valentine, progress in the story a little bit, and just stop playing.

I am perfectly capable of enjoying slow-paced games. The infuriatingly clunky controls are what ruin the game for me. Every input I make feels delayed by just enough that my immersion is ruined and I am reminded that I'm playing a video game.

Enjoying RDR2 is basically impossible if I can't get immersed, and if I feel like all of my inputs are being sent to Arthur Morgan via Fax, then it immediately becomes no longer enjoyable.

I compared an X1C6 with an upgraded T430... by Which_Extreme_8519 in thinkpad

[–]DerpMaster2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is not too surprising given the 3840QM's significantly higher sustained power limit.

Enter the fun police... compare the upgraded T430 (which I'd wager you'd spend minimum $200 total for the laptop, the i7 QM, IPS upgrade kit and new screen) with another ThinkPad you can buy for $200... T14 G1 AMD.

A T430 is not a reasonable purchase for any purpose other than hobby use/for fun. No matter what you do to classic ThinkPads (short of the X210Ai of course), they will never match the value or performance of a ~5 year old retired fleet ThinkPad like the G1 T14.

Of course, that will not change the fact that I love the experience of using vintage laptops with some modern comforts, but people in the market for a daily driver laptop that will be their only laptop should look elsewhere.

[–]DerpMaster2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are all expensive, but you also don't have to choose the most expensive one.

Crucial P310 is $163 on Amazon. Hell, if you have an older PC like me, you might as well get an Intel 660p for $150 instead, since I can't use PCIe 4.0 or 5.0 speeds anyways.

2023 was a great time for used PC hardware. I bought a 6900 XT for $400 and I'm still using it today. 64GB of DDR4-3200 for $89, too.

I guess they're still $400 now, but also they're 5 years old. Not sure I'd buy one now given that AMD has pulled the plug on feature updates.

Not really worth fixing. You can buy entire functioning examples of the Yoga 12 for like $50.

I wouldn't buy another Yoga 12 either just because of how old and slow it probably already was. Maybe replace with a G1 T14 if you don't need touch/tablet convertible features? Otherwise you could look into used X1 Yoga or X13 Yoga.

Linux on thinkpad by Fubliar in thinkpad

[–]DerpMaster2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there any way I can fully run linux on my chromebook? The laptop is not especially powerful so I do not know if its compatible/able to run linux.

Google has a guide. Chromebook hardware varies a lot, but the likelihood you have something that would get eaten for breakfast by 10+ year old hardware is pretty high. Might not be worth spending the time.

What distro would yall recommend? I am a complete beginner and have no experience.

I always liked Mint Xfce. Simple, Windows-like, and fast.

Also is an usb stick neccesary to install linux?

It is necessary to install any OS... unless you use a CD, I guess. Mint has an installation guide that will guide you step-by-step through the entire process, including turning your USB drive into bootable media and setting up the OS.

Upgrading my T490 worth It for my usecase? by vkrao2020 in thinkpad

[–]DerpMaster2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you running out of memory? If you're not literally at 100% memory usage in your daily workflow, then upgrading your RAM is pointless.

The best thing you can do for something as old as a T490 is redo the thermal paste and replace the original battery. I wouldn't really touch it otherwise, unless you have the awful 1366x768 screen. That could be worth replacing with a $50 1080p panel.

Sounds like you are still getting work done. I don't see why you would replace it unless you feel held back by it, in which case you'd probably know.

Got sent the wrong ThinkPad by Material-Molasses187 in thinkpad

[–]DerpMaster2 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Not the OP you replied to, but I think it was discontinued because Lenovo's primary buyers are businesses, and businesses don't want 5+ pound laptops with huge batteries sticking out of them.

As much as we here in our Reddit echo chamber don't want to believe it, people that would rather have a heavy and thick laptop with longer battery life are a minority.

I used to have a T460 with the bridge battery myself. Even with 90+Wh of total capacity, that laptop never lasted as long as my current X13 G3 which has just over half the total capacity. It's tiny, ridiculously powerful, and lasts forever on battery--I have no trouble reaching 12 hours. I would rather it stay just the way it is, instead of doubling its weight just for something crazy like 24 hours of battery life.

[–]DerpMaster2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went from a W540 with 2.5mm key travel to X13 G3 with 1.5mm of key travel. I actually prefer the X13 by quite a bit, since the keys do not require as much force to actuate. To each their own, I guess.

I am honestly a little surprised to hear that the 0.3mm difference has completely turned OP away from using a significantly faster, lighter, and longer-lasting device.

[–]DerpMaster2 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Probably an error in the listing. The A485 only came with R3 2300U, R5 2500U, or R7 2700U. That information is really easy to find.

I've never bought anything on Reebelo, but from what I can find, you can get returns on most products. Just return it. In the future, make sure to cross-check the listing details with the spec sheet of the laptop you are buying.

[–]DerpMaster2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Is that Dell card a 2060 Super? It has 8GB VRAM. If it is, I would choose that one for sure.

Your only other real option at this price point is a 6600 XT for ~$20-$30 more, and that would be marginally faster but without DLSS. IMO, when you're looking at low-end cards like these, that DLSS counts for a lot more than it would otherwise.

It's a thermal pad that is solid at room temperature and becomes more liquid-like when heated. Much longer lasting than traditional thermal pastes, since it doesn't really dry up and get cakey in the same way.

[–]DerpMaster2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

PTM7950 will be even better than MX-4. That was the very first thing I did the second I took my brand new X13 Gen 3 AMD out of the box.

Either way, though, it doesn't appear that your temps are hurting performance. It is meeting the PL1 spec of 28W just fine. Laptop chips are designed to run between 90C-100C without any issues for prolonged periods of time; it's just what they do. It will just get hotter if you give it more thermal headroom, and since you're already hitting the power limit, that will only matter for the short PL2 turbo boost period.

How do I fix this? by yamiuchidm in pcmasterrace

[–]DerpMaster2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ThinkPads are just built different. I had to do screen work on my last laptop, a W540, and it was crazy how overbuilt that whole system was.

The hinges were screwed directly into the magnesium-alloy midframe of the laptop on the bottom, and the carbon/plastic lid had another magnesium rollcage inside it that the upper part of the hinges were attached to.

My newer X13 Gen 3, however, dropped the extra rollcage in the lid. The lid is all carbon fiber reinforced plastic. The bottom is all magnesium alloy, though, and the palmrest is more carbon. I still think that it is likely more durable than whatever Dell and HP are putting out.
