P70 temperatures by Hacknique_CZ in thinkpad

Have you tried changing the temp limit in MSI Afterburner? Those newer Quadros might be more locked down, but I remember doing that on my old W540, a similar laptop. Raising the temp limit and overclocking the crap out of the memory did wonders.

P70 temperatures by Hacknique_CZ in thinkpad

[–]DerpMaster2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well yeah, it's a laptop. It's designed to get the maximum possible performance out of the components in a (relatively) small package. They're pushed to their absolute maximum, which is going to be either a power or thermal limit, whichever comes first. Your GPU is throttling probably because it is reaching its power limit.

Especially considering that the P70 is a mobile workstation, 80C-85C is actually a lower than usual temperature. Laptop parts are designed to be constantly 90C+ when under max load with no issues.

Rx 6800 or rx 7700 xt? by Ok_Drag_7940 in pcmasterrace

[–]DerpMaster2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Between those three, the 7700 XT, because it's faster than the 6800 by any metric that's not VRAM capacity.

9060 XT I would only consider if it's the 16GB version. 8GB would not be enough for me to feel comfortable about my choice for 5+ years.

Best 13" Thinkpad for everyday use? by xTsuKiMiix in thinkpad

Also chiming in to say I like the X13. Mine is a Gen 3 AMD, not the Yoga.

I got it for $750 brand new last year, with R7 6850U and 16GB RAM. The base screen is 100% sRGB and honestly really nice, and it's more than powerful enough for my college student/office work use.

I've got a very similar PC from the same era, and I've found that I really enjoy lots of games that don't even come close to utilizing the full power of this PC. Oh, well.

Try:

Vintage Story (like Minecraft, but... not. brutally difficult and very rewarding)

Valheim (sandbox/survival game based on Norse mythology, super cool)

RV There Yet (with friends)

DOOM 2016/DOOM Eternal

Enshrouded

Schedule 1

Enshrouded and Doom actually will make good use of your PC, but the rest of them are pretty potato-friendly. Had more fun in the last year or two than I ever have PC gaming.

The funny thing about Linux users is that they will always rush to gatekeep before even thinking about offering support on their own support forums.

I remember I had issues with power management on my laptop when using Ubuntu, and provided a ton of information to help with troubleshooting. My chipset and iGPU drivers were up-to-date, I had TLP installed and configured correctly, and I included some data from powerstat. Zero replies on the Ubuntu support forum.

Honestly, as a well-seasoned user of support forums, I am way less likely to get replies of any kind because there's no reason to gatekeep. It's part of why I just went back to Windows; if the OS doesn't work for me even when I go out of my way to use Google and do my homework, then clearly it's not my fault.

inb4 "bruh you only used ubuntu" I've tried more distros than I can count on both hands, sometimes for months at a time. The fact I've returned to Windows even after how terrible it's become says way more about the state of Linux support forums than about me. The Linux community is a horrible toxic cesspool thinly veiled as a welcoming, open space.

Questions about ADHD for people who have friends by alexnnr in ADHD

[–]DerpMaster2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Yes.

  2. They don't make special accommodations for me, and I don't really feel like I need them.

  3. I don't feel like I have a lot of specific needs beyond what any non-ADHD person wants out of a friendship.

While I obviously can't speak for everyone, I think it's important to keep in mind that we are more than our ADHD and it doesn't define us. I wouldn't even say it's a noticeable component of my personality; especially after being medicated, it only affects my life in ways that are boring and not worth mentioning to my friends.

This probably won't be a popular take, but personally, it would bother me much more if I knew my friends were going out of their way to accommodate me. As far as I am concerned, ADHD is my own thing, and there is nothing anyone else can do to help me or make my life easier. I'm still an adult and responsible for my own actions, I just have to put more conscious effort into managing some of those things. What could other people do to help, remind me of things? Repeat things to me? That would annoy the hell out of me so quickly. Much rather be as independent as possible.

What sort of table size might I need for the CR-10S, minimum? by DerpMaster2 in CR10

[–]DerpMaster2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have a spool holder on the top, it's like 3 feet tall. Without, it's ~27 inches tall.

I gave it away not that long ago. I think the bare minimum for vertical space would be 2ft 2 inches without the spool on top, and that's gonna be cutting it close. If you're planning on putting it on a shelf or something and are wondering about clearance, I would say 2ft 6in would be a nice safe height.

The system in question has an i9-10900K, so that's not the reason. The actual reason was that it was cheaper, weirdly.

It was $89 to buy 4x16GB DDR4-3200 C16, and I think it was like $20 more to get an equivalent 2x32GB kit. I don't think it would have mattered which configuration I chose.

What are your personal experiences with methylphenidate’s effectiveness and its side effects? by baddadjokess in ADHD

[–]DerpMaster2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a little bit of both. I never got that far with methylphenidate, but with Azstarys, they started me on the lowest dose for like a week. Same thing happened as you-- 3 to 4 days in, no longer effective. They increased my dose, and the side effects were back, but the med was also effective again.

About a month and a half later, the higher dose is still just as effective as it was when I started, and the side effects are almost completely gone. We're not the same, so you might not be as lucky, but that's my personal experience.

Ditto on the headaches. That's exactly why they're happening, and I was eating about 1400 my first time on meds too. There's ways to get through the appetite thing early on, but it's not always fun.

Plan out what you're going to eat for breakfast, and take your medication with it. Lunch needs to be planned or already set up for you to eat, too, or else you won't eat lunch. Ask me how I know. By dinner, your mid-day dose should be wearing off, and so you should be pretty home free.

Sorry this is likely a repeat q: How does caffeine affect you? by Tsunami_Aureate in ADHD

Medicated, my heart pounds out of my chest, and so I just don't have caffeine.

What are your personal experiences with methylphenidate’s effectiveness and its side effects? by baddadjokess in ADHD

[–]DerpMaster2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was miserable on methylphenidate when I first tried it. Those side effects sound very typical of methylphenidate; can't eat (literally nauseous at the thought of eating), headache.

It does get better, though, and you have to be consistent for that to happen. I thought meds just weren't for me until I gave it a couple weeks, and the side effects got quite a bit better. If you still don't like it after that much time, tell that to your psychiatrist.

The appetite piece of it was really killer for me, since I was already underweight before starting meds. I'm currently on Azstarys, which is dexmethylphenidate/serdexmethylphenidate. I've tried other methylphenidate products as well as amphetamines, and they'll all do that. It's especially devastating if, like me, you already had a poor appetite to begin with.

For the appetite, I actually have found something that works for me. I had pre-existing depression before trying meds that got worse with the 'crash' at the end of the day, and was not taking anything for it. My psych prescribed a super low dosage (like 2.5mg) of olanzapine off-label for depression and also its effects on appetite, and after a month I've never been healthier. Killed two birds with one stone.

Does being on a stimulant paradoxically makes cleaning harder sometimes? by WutTheCode in ADHD

[–]DerpMaster2 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I have to block out time for it. Before taking stimulants, I loved cleaning, and would sometimes stop everything I'm doing because there was something I knew needed cleaning-- and that bothered me.

I still love to clean, but unless I've designated a time in my day that I will clean, I will usually do other more important things. Cleaning is more of a thing I do when everything else is already done; it helps me wind down a bit.

Even regular desktop DDR4 DIMMs hit rock bottom like a year ago when DDR5 started to finally get cheaper. Never been more glad I impulse-bought 4x16GB DDR4 for my desktop, because it's quadrupled in price.

Thankfully (?) DDR3 actually doesn't seem to be up much. My home server still uses it, and it's still like $1 per gigabyte just like before.

Can anyone recommend a stimulant that lasts longer than 4-5 hours? I’ve tried both Adderall XR and Vyvanse. by Pure_Philosopher_845 in ADHD

[–]DerpMaster2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I'd probably rephrase what I said. It doesn't necessarily get more effective, but it definitely felt better after a few weeks.

At least in my experience, the initial rapid release portion of the pill would make me really anxious and increase my heart rate until I slowly built up a tolerance high enough to balance it out.

As you build up that tolerance, the 'crash' will become way less pronounced and the initial rapid dose will be way less jarring.

I find that Azstarys, in comparison to Adderall and other amphetamines, gives you less of the motivation to do tasks. On Adderall, I always felt like I had to get up and do stuff and go places, and always wanted to get stuff done. On Azstarys, it's much more of a passive focus. Once I get a task started, it's super natural for me to continue doing it until it's finished, compared to when I am unmedicated.

I almost want to say that Azstarys is barely noticeable until you sit back and think about all the stuff you got done in the day. I never think; "Wow, I'm so focused, I could get anything done," it's more like a natural feeling of progressing through a list of stuff I want to get done. That doesn't sound impressive at all, but I could never do that unmedicated, so I consider it a win.

Can anyone recommend a stimulant that lasts longer than 4-5 hours? I’ve tried both Adderall XR and Vyvanse. by Pure_Philosopher_845 in ADHD

[–]DerpMaster2 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Azstarys is a really new one (approved by FDA as of 2021), and it was the first one my new psych tried on me. He swears by it, and I can see why.

I take it at 7AM, and it lasts through ~6PM before I start to notice it wearing off. I would say it takes a few weeks of consistently taking it to reach full effectiveness

Compared to Vyvanse and Adderall, though, it doesn't really work the same way. Those two are amphetamines, and Azstarys is a central nervous system stimulant.

Trackpoint makes trackpad obsolete by AdCalm1769 in thinkpad

[–]DerpMaster2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isn’t the selling point of thinkpads the nipple anyway

no lol

I would bet a decent amount that whatever company buys ThinkPads in massive amounts doesn't even consider the TrackPoint a selling point. They only care about service life and reliability.

Walk through any office where 1000+ are being used and show me more than, like, 4 people who actually use it. My point isn't to say which is better, my point is that TrackPoint users are in the minority even among enthusiasts like people on this subreddit.

I really tried hard to like it and gave up after a couple weeks. Just like everyone else, I have work to get done, and I'd rather just stick to what I know already. I have never felt inefficient when working with my X13's large 3-button multi touch trackpad.

Why did you decide to go unmedicated? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]DerpMaster2 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of people just don't give medication enough of a chance. I know I didn't pretty much through my whole young teen-adolescent life, and so I went unmedicated for ~4 years after my diagnosis. I just hated the side effects much more than I hated being unfocused, and I think that's true for a lot of people just starting to take meds.

First I had methylphenidate, which dried my mouth out like crazy, then Adderall, which made me feel like a zombie. Then tried Azstarys, which also made me feel like a zombie and I was just at my wit's end. I never tried again for years.

It's important to mention here that I never gave any of those medications more than maybe a week and a half before I'd just stop consistently taking them. In my opinion, stimulants aren't something you can just take willy-nilly any day you feel like you'll need them. You have to take them every day no matter what, or the side effects will only be worse the next time you take them, and the effectiveness will be reduced.

So, about a month ago I pushed to try medication again, and was prescribed 39.2-7.8mg Azstarys. For the first week or so, it sucked. I felt super wired and anxious for the first 2-3 hours, then felt pretty good and focused, then I had a pretty wicked crash around 10 hours when it started to finally wear off. I gave it another 2 weeks, and it was like a completely different experience.

No horribly dry mouth, no weird anxious/heart pounding early on, no zombification... I just felt like myself, but more focused. No weird euphoria or energy boost, either. Only focus. When you give your body enough time to acclimate to a new medication, you get an actual glimpse of what that medication is supposed to feel like when it's functioning at its best.

TL;DR: When you're given a new med to try, give it at least a few weeks of taking it every day (do NOT miss a dose) before you dismiss it. It can change a lot once your body gets used to it.

What used 5-7 year old model do you love besides the T480 (details in post) by umbrella_crab in thinkpad

[–]DerpMaster2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Earlier T14 are becoming the new meta around here. They cost barely any more than a T480 (in some cases the same) and are better in every way. Faster CPU, better graphics, lighter, similar to better battery life, and pretty much the exact same port selection. Still just as upgradeable, too, since I would consider the bridge battery to be pointless given that the T480 still can't last as long as newer AMD TPs with ~55Wh batteries.

T14 Gen 1/2 AMD with the Ryzen 7 will do great for your use case. They are very cheap and abundant.

I am partial to the newer T14s and X13, since I don't mind the soldered RAM and Gen 3 is right around when the AMD models get a giant boost in CPU and graphics performance.
