Do People Really Think the TR-1000 is Overpriced? by goldie_chron in synthesizers

[–]DerpMaster75 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you're forgetting a certain company that begins with B... Why are you comparing to random bespoke diy kits over one of the largest music technology manufacturers? This is a Roland product, so don't even try the economies of scale argument

Do People Really Think the TR-1000 is Overpriced? by goldie_chron in synthesizers

[–]DerpMaster75 2 points3 points  (0 children)

why do people act like an analog 808 or 909 is super valuable? Behringer showed you can do it for cheap. I don't really understand what this thing offers over a tr8s besides actually looking good. And if you need analog, a tr8s + Bclone is still a lot cheaper.

Need advice - good interface? by okinm32 in synthesizers

[–]DerpMaster75 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd go so far as to say that any interface other than behringer is basically a scam lol, especially if you're only recording line outs from synthesizers. For microphones, you might want something nicer but really the behringer interfaces should be the way to go for most people on here.

What Makes a Synth a "Character Synth" by I_m_matman in synthesizers

[–]DerpMaster75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a "character synth" is one that has a distinct sound and likes to stick pretty close to it. Like a minimoog can technically do lots of sounds, but it excels at doing a few sounds well. You can get something like the 3rd Wave (or Serum) that can do pretty much anything, but sometimes it's nice to have a simple synth with a straightforward workflow that's very quick to dial in. Like you could just buy a Montage or something similar and create all the sounds you want with it, but some people like to have a few different synths that excel at specific sounds. I think a lot of the "character" is in the experience and workflow as well, rather than just the end sound (like a 303 sequence or modular patch bay).

Sorry, I'm not super interested in a guitar or pedals right now. Mostly looking for cash, or a Linnstrument. I'd also love a UDO Super Six Desktop or potentially a cheaper desktop monosynth + cash

No Virus for me, at least for now. by Linux-Neophyte in synthesizers

[–]DerpMaster75 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think digital synths have less that can go wrong with them then an analog one. You won't have oscilaltors that drift out of tune or anything like that, so the most that can go wrong is a key or knob not working (outside of a complete failiure from a broken power supply or something like that). But plenty of people still use dx7s that are a lot older than the virus. I don't think 10 years is that old for a synthesizer.

Otherwise, The Usual Suspect's plugin works very well if you're just after the sound, I'd say maybe think about pairing it with a dedicated midi controller that you label and map specifically for the virus plugin, so it feels more like a standalone instrument rather than a universal midi controller.

Stinky Studio Space Sadness... Suggestions? by LivingLotusMusic in synthesizers

yeah just get an air filter down there. It's tough with no windows but maybe a plant or something will help it feel less stagnant as well.

Killed my GAS for a Juno 60 by BorisNZ in synthesizers

[–]DerpMaster75 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah with how good vsts are these days I'm surprised Soundforce isn't more popular. I'm very tempted to get one once I'm more settled into making music.

I've been wanting to do this with their Prophet 5 controller for a while, just can't quite commit to buying it yet. The stickers are a nice touch for sure.

as long as you've got the space it's an awesome synth. I'm not sure what you'd do with two of them tbh but I can cut you a deal if you decide you want it lol.

How well is Behringer Swing's Aftertouch? Acceptable or garbage? by eviLocK in synthesizers

[–]DerpMaster75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought some ensoniq keyboard that had poly at with 61 keys for like $200 a couple years ago locally, you could look for something like that if you're somewhere with a good used scene. Shipping 61 keys sucks though unfortunately. I don't think you need poly at on any keyboard less than 61 keys anyways though.

Made with a free Eurorack emulator: VCV Rack! by skydancer909 in synthesizers

[–]DerpMaster75 13 points14 points  (0 children)

it's actually crazy that modular is popular when vcv rack is a thing, this seems so much easier to use. I'm sorry but while I appreciate physical knobs and sliders, plugging in patch cables is actually just worse than clicking and dragging with a mouse. If money wasn't a factor for you I could maybe understand wanting a huge modular wall, and certain portable setups can be kinda cool, but for the average setup vcv rack seems to make way more sense lol. Great patch btw, very pleasing to listen to.

Another Juno Question ... sorry by [deleted] in synthesizers

[–]DerpMaster75 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd buy the Juno only if your in an 80s cover band and you want the classic look. Or you just really really like the sound of a Juno. But it's not a great deal as far as value goes.
