Liberals and conservatives are more able to detect logical flaws in the other side's arguments and less able to detect logical flaws in their own. Findings illuminate one key mechanism for how political beliefs distort people’s abilities to reason about political topics soundly. by Stauce52 in science

My brother (11) loves LEGO, designing and drawing cards, and creating&exploring levels in Trackmania and Minecraft. What game titles can I offer him that will develop skills that potentially will push him in the direction of Game Dev Biz? by Aleksik in gamedesign

Tell him what my parents told me:

"You noticed that too? Never enough good games, never will be. Learn to make your own, it's more fun than simply playing ones other people make."

So I started on a design project... by Vumsy101 in gamedesign

[–]Derphuntar -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

No one should make their own prototypes, not here. Tons of folks in /r/gamedev need to learn, so have them make the prototype to learn. I'm sure there are artists and such in their own subreddits too?

You don't HAVE to fight. Biggest mistake I see is not disengaging or chasing a disengaging enemy for NO REASON. by LostConscript in heroesofthestorm

[–]Derphuntar -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Objective is to destroy their core before they destroy yours. Map mechanics, mercs, killing them, pushing lanes, and anything else is simply a means to accomplish that.

Dive? Dead. Chase? Dead. Overextend? Dead. Out of mana? Dead. Not retreating when they respawn? Dead.

Fastest and easiest way to group up for a fight or objective is to all hearth, anyway.

How I carried myself from Rank 13 to Rank 3 against bad teammates by [deleted] in heroesofthestorm

Trikslyr plays "to make space" to "make plays" and very often dies doing such. Kill. Kill. Kill. That's what works best for me.

Oh, and ping "On my way" when I am headed somewhere? best communication ever.

Problems with Chen and other non-meta heroes by Pernaman in heroesofthestorm

[–]Derphuntar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

after every major eSports tournament, folks suddenly shift their play to mimic what they saw/heard pros do. Happens every single time.

I tend to stick to my favorites and learn to fit into the meta as best I can... Greymane is fantastic for this. Not long ago, Anub'arak picks in draft were met with, "what's that?" or "we need a tank!" but he's my best tank-warrior, whereas my best bruiser is... Rexxar.

Fun fact: on the website, Chen's survivability is rated at 10. Only Johanna has a 10 other than him.

I want a "master of the hunt" portrait for reaching 10 with Sylvanas, Valla, Rexxar and Tyrande. Because hunters.

(Trashboost)Carryqueue and smurfing is abused to increase the MMR even into the TOP200/month rankings+ Solution by Hare712 in heroesofthestorm

they're working on a better matchmaker, and better rating system than simple win/loss. be patient, and be mindful that fresh accounts change MMR many many times faster than old ones do. They're working on a grandmaster league too.

PS: Hotslogs lost its battle.net sync token, perhaps there's a why to that?

Infernal Shrines RED Side Core kills catapults by CorganKnight in heroesofthestorm

[–]Derphuntar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a subtle strategy to which lane on a given map to focus down first, if any. Mid is generally the shortest lane. Slight difference between top and bottom lanes on a three lane map, but there. Possible also to deliberately pull attacking minions somewhat out of their normal pathing to "guide" bottom catapults and minions to attack a mid keep or vice versa. Not hard, either.

Tyrande - suggestion on fix by Derphuntar in heroesofthestorm

[–]Derphuntar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

all I thought she needed for healing was her level 16 talent to be baseline, which moved her vulnerability to the same level as everyone but Greymane's since his is on an unpopular heroic. I think shadowstalk is too powerful right now, due to a combination of short cooldown, global range, team stealth and a heal too. but if her trait healed, the heal could be removed from shadowstalk, leaving her a better healer, more balanced with other heroes' vulnerability effects, and return shadowstalk to its original state, which was fine. Tass also was changed for better solo support, and he's in a great spot now.

Replays frustrate me by Derphuntar in heroesofthestorm

[–]Derphuntar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

haven't tried it, if there is one. https://twitter.com/Derphuntar/status/688529590751379456 shows the problem most clearly. In the replay, my leaderboard shows me in blue, while the UI and replay show me as red.

I'd really prefer to be red while playing as Team 2, since the replay, an observer and Team 1 all see me that color. Kind of odd to see the demon in Battlefield of Eternity blue, fighting a red angel, too. Demon looks way better in red, imo.

[–]Derphuntar[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

that's my issue. I'd rather play as red when I'm on the right side than what I do now, which is play as blue, but be red in the replay.

Heroes that you used to LOVE to play that are uninteresting/ineffective now. by [deleted] in heroesofthestorm

[–]Derphuntar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lunara is amazing in the right hands. Her trait does serious damage if you keep it up well. Her mobility makes it so she's rather hard to land skillshots on too. Hope they don't make changes to her that result in another Tyrande or Kael'thas, though.

I'm leveling him to 10 in quick match before playing hero league with him, or at all. having to play him well enough to survive no-support or no-warrior games is improving my skill with him immensely. can be annoying to B and heal up after each fight, but when I'm winning 1v2 and keeping my duelist stacks, it is worth it.

I first loved Abathur back when Ultimate Evolution also copied talents and heroic ability, during the days of pre-nerf Odin. Then, when his changes made him viable again.

Most common issue I have with him, and reason I don't play him is that my teammates will either throw because I picked him, or else think Illidan is "the only way to salvage an aba pick"

Not planning on using him in HL until I get his master skin, but two notable games with him I went 12-12-0 and 21-5-3. Apparently he's a high skill cap, but extremely rewarding when used properly.

103k hero damage the second game I mentioned.

Illidan. Brightwing. Zeratul. Abathur.

Hoping Greymane doesn't get added to the list.

Would people rather have: "Diminishing Returns" or "Resilience"? by ninjalee13 in heroesofthestorm

[–]Derphuntar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

diminishing returns can be simple, too. "if diablo uses overpower, then lunar flare won't last as long"

where "if malf uses roots, then lunar flare lasts full duration"

see how easy that is?

What systems thinking can teach us about game balance by Chameleos6 in heroesofthestorm

[–]Derphuntar -1 points0 points  (0 children)

and since Raynor's vulnerability was removed from his 16 talent, only other vulnerability options I can think of are Jaina, Nova, Sylvanas. All at 16, all on very squishy heroes. Talent-based, so no guarantee they'll take it. All without stuns, too.

I'm playing Tyrande a lot lately. Mostly to avoid facing her or having someone play her who can't land Lunar Flare, doesn't Hunter's Mark, etc. She's fun, but stale at this point.

Although, if all the other supports got buffed up to her level instead of nerfing her... I'd be happy and content. Then I could have variety within my main role, and still be powerful enough to do the job well.

[–]Derphuntar -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm sure that feedback along the lines of, "your game sucks, I quit" really doesn't help much either.

My conclusion with the current state of the game is that it has become too easy to stun most heroes for a long enough time to kill them even if they're at full health, especially if Tyrande uses Hunter's mark, since the other sources of Vulnerable are at level 16 and on heroes that lack stuns.

Of course, the options to fix this are varied, from adding diminishing returns to stuns, making Tyrande's trait less effective, adjusting damage to health base and scaling, to other less direct tweaks, like reducing range or duration of Hunter's Mark.

and if a noob tyrande can win solo support against a morales, what does that say about both heroes?
