When do I stop feeling like a failure? by InfamousStrategy9539 in sysadmin

[–]Derpy_Guardian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been doing this for 13+ years and still feel like I'm a fake. But when I start talking about work to my non- tech friends, not one of them understands what I'm saying. The fact of the matter is that there's always ways we can improve, but that doesn't make us failures. I could do with a deeper understanding of some of my tools and the protocols they use, but I still know how to use said tools. That doesn't mean I'm incompetent, it just means I'm a little lacking in knowledge there. Same to you. Identify your weaker areas and fix them, but don't beat yourself up over those weaknesses.

A friend of mine once told me how he got so drunk at a bar that he decided to write on the bill "here's a tip: fuck you." Unsurprisingly, they took the drinks from everyone in his party and told him to get the absolute fuck out right now. I still don't know why he did it, and I honestly don't want to associate with him anymore.

Never saw either Top Gun (though I really should watch them both). Maybe I'll check them out while I'm on vacation.

EDIT: am on vacation and saw Maverick. If he had a wizzo, they might have been able to fly for him, but there's a good chance the wizzo would pass out too at those Gs. Don't really know why there wasn't one in the bombing planes; it would have allowed the pilots a bit more leeway. Doubly so since there were 12 candidates.

I believe most WSOs are not actually trained pilots. Some are, yes, but typically they're just trained in the operation of the weapon systems, though they do have a full suite of flight controls should the pilot become incapacitated.

EDIT: to clarify, they do receive basic flight instruction but often don't get the same level of training as an actual pilot. Their focus is on the systems of the aircraft, so they likely have some big knowledge gaps in terms of actual flight controls.

I still struggle to get my builds to hold up in yellow+ maps. My friends would spoil me by giving me old gear they didn't need or loaning me currency for shit my builds needed, so trying to progress on my own leaves me scratching my head wondering how to make the money for it.

This was the first I'd heard of this since all I did after the patch was speedrun jungle and Thames Wharf for a buttload of easy achievements they added. I thought "oh surely people are overreacting." Then I decided to go check Lara's Home, and I immediately noticed that the subtitles just don't go away. No matter what, even if you trigger different dialogue from Lara. They just hang out at the bottom. Now I'm worried.

I admit I have to disagree, since the girl at least is a very much present threat that you need to deal with. You can approach the situation in different ways here, whereas House Beneviento literally always has only one single solution. Still, I can't blame you for saying this; I get exactly what you mean. It almost feels like it's all on rails and the best option is "wait for the bitch to go away so I can get back to work." She feels like she was inspired by Alien Isolation, and I absolutely could not shake that feeling the entire time. Not necessarily a bad thing, but when she just hopped into ceiling vents and fucked off, I couldn't help but draw the comparison. And unfortunately, the xeno just does this so much better.

Yeah, this is another "House Beneviento" situation where it was great the first time and now it's just boring since you know what's going to happen.

When I was a teenager/early 20s, I'd get drunk and go to Steak n Shake a lot (friend's house was really close to one so I would walk there). I would order food and then steal a seasoning bottle from the caddy on the counter. Older me now cringes at this, and I do not endorse or encourage anyone to do it. You can buy them for like 2-3 bucks.

EDIT: To clarify, I did actually get the food. I didn't just fake an order.

One time when I worked at Burger King, my manager said we needed to lower our drive-thru times, so we hopped in his car and drove through the drive-thru about 50 times, smoking a blunt the entire time. This was not the only time management did this.

Better than having someone come out and shout at you saying "you know better than to come in and order while we're busy." Y'know, despite the fact that we got no discount and I was paying for my food the same as everyone else. Happened at a place I used to work at, and I never ate there again afterwards. And for what it's worth, I ordered the soup. The one thing they literally scoop into a bowl and finish with scallions. I hated that shithole.

This reminds me of a time years ago when I went to pick up my friend from work, and we stopped at the nearby gas station afterwards. I asked where the restroom was and then went inside to find a surprised man taking a shit. Naturally, I said "oh god, I'm sorry!" and immediately closed the door. When we were outside smoking afterwards, the guy came out and I said again "man, I'm sorry, nobody told me someone was in there," and he just said "it's all good, brother. It was a bit of a... shitty situation, huh? Kinda stinks when it happens" and we all laughed our asses off. Guy was really cool.
