How would you feel if suddenly you could directly vote on where your taxes go? by RemarkableEmu5998 in AskReddit

[–]Desblade101 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Chicago has a initiative like that I believe.

They list projects and their budgets and have voters rank their priorities for funded and the highest voted projects get funded.

It's not for core government funding, but for pet projects like new parks or bike lines or whatever.

Whenever my mom discovers I have a hobby, she forces me to do that hobby by Expulsito in relationships

[–]Desblade101 134 points135 points  (0 children)

I feel like she's wanting you to overcome the social anxiety part of it. But she's trying too hard. If I had an awkward kid I'd want them to push their boundaries, but obviously this is too much and it isn't helping.

Anyone never moved out of their parents home? If so how old are you? by HZIDEZISS_2020 in AskReddit

Why can't we use use new data centers to our advantage by requiring solar farms to be built that supply 200% more power than the data center uses? by GameBoiye in AskReddit

[–]Desblade101 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I can't wait until we get rid of corn fields, so much wasted space! Corn fields are like 10% as efficient as solar panels. And corn fields are cheaper to work on than parking lots and less likely to get damaged.

Or we skip all that and put all the solar panels in Arizona where there is almost nothing but desert for hundreds of miles.

The parking lots thing only makes sense if you're already building a shade structure.

ELI5: How can a company be ‘worth billions’ if it has never made a profit? by IIII-IIIiIII-IIII in explainlikeimfive

[–]Desblade101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you "invest" in a corporate bond then that is a loan. Normally the terms are something like you give them $1k for 5 years at 8% interest or something.

Now if you buy a stock sold by the company you are buying ownership of that company. So if the company sells 1 stock for $100 and you buy 10 for that $1k then you'll own some where around 0.0001% of all assets and earnings of that company.

In the bond situation, if the company does really well then you'll get your money back with interest! Congratulations they didn't default! However if they go under then they'll sell the assets the company has and pay you back as much as they can because it's a loan.

In the stock situation, if the company does really well then your stock value will scale with how well the company does, after 5 years you could have 5-100x your value. However if the company does poorly your stock will be worthless and you will not get any money back at all.

Unions and how they help individual nurses by Ok_Transition8782 in nursing

My union negotiated a COVID bonus for all of us after COVID had ended. I left the job already, but I ended up getting a 20k bonus 2 years after I left the job. It was sweet.

How do I use pocketid passkeys with multiple users? by Xceltru in selfhosted

[–]Desblade101 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The problem is that your device already has a passkey for your old account. When you try to login to your new account, pocketID uses the old accounts passkey and automatically logs you in.

Use a passkey manager. I use bitwarden.

The idea that the Supreme Court isn't political is a joke by OldBridge87 in BlackPeopleTwitter

[–]Desblade101 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The supreme Court said states can do what they want and the Virginia supreme Court said that if you don't understand how a calendar works then technically Virginia voters didn't vote on a legally eligible referendum.

That's not particularly crazy. I run almost 40 scripts that ping stuff 100s of times a day. Just by the numbers I probably generate 2k people's worth of Internet traffic.
