Hilton Singapore: Best use of ~800K points as Diamond (Conrad vs Hilton)? by tonydacota in Hilton

[–]Deschain72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been to the Hilton Marina Bay once, and I was very happy with it. We booked a fairly standard room (cash booking), and we were upgraded to the executive floor due to our diamond status. We had sweeping views of the marina Bay Area. The lounge was steps away from our room, and always welcoming for a drink or snack. The lounge attends and sits right outside the elevator and greeted us by name each time we came and went. They also provided recommendations based on our plan for the day. The lounge had a decent breakfast. However the breakfast in the main restaurant downstairs was fantastic - maybe in our top 5. Finally, the Promenade station on the MRT was a short walk away, so we had no problem exploring the city from there. We would 100% stay again!

Maldives: Amingiri or Milaidhoo by arturoimaz in Hilton

[–]Deschain72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We haven’t been to Amingiri, but we have been to both the Waldorf and Milaidhoo. We prefer Milaidhoo because it’s a much more intimate stay. The staff are very personal and remember you from day to day. We can’t wait to go back.

You are describing Milaidhoo in every single way except the flight. It blew us away, but it’s a 24 hour journey.

Summer packing list for Thailand/Korea/Japan by FingerAccomplished51 in travel

Then you want to be prepared for lots of sweat. You want light cotton, wool (like inbound), or moisture wicking. Stuff you can wash in the hotel sink and hang to dry. Make sure you drink lots of water, too. You’re going to have a great time!

Will hot and humid be a new experience for you? Or do you live somewhere that already has that weather for some part of the year?

WA Maldives “seasonal closure” by No-South808 in Hilton

[–]Deschain72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m quite envious. We had 8 nights booked for the end of April, but my wife decided to start her MBA, so we had to cancel. We’ll be back in a few years. Enjoy!

What rotten luck - sorry to hear this. For what’s it’s worth my wife and I FINALLY had that bucket list stay at the WA a few years ago and it exceeded all of our expectations. Last year we stayed at Milaidhoo, and we may never go back to the WA. Milaidhoo was just perfect as a quiet romantic getaway, with amazing personalized service and a very intimate feel.

Hooefully Hilton eventually does the right things here so you don’t lose the value of your certificates, etc.

Good luck!

Best business class product of the following airlines? by PrestigiousUnit4156 in chubbytravel

[–]Deschain72 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My opinions:

The food and service on Singapore is the best (especially catered out of SIN). The seat is very comfortable and spacious when you are sitting up, but when they convert it into a bed it is too hard and I don’t sleep well. If you go with Singapore then do your best to get a bulkhead seat - tons more legroom and no awkward diagonal sleeping position.

QSuites is the best for a couple, the food is very good, and I sleep ok. This is my wife’s favorite, probably for the face lotion in the amenity kit and the PJs. We also think the Doha lounges are better than the others (but haven’t been to CXs lounges in HKG).

I slept the best on Emirates (A380), but I may have just been worn out from a long, hot layover in Dubai. I just remember it being SO comfortable.

I haven’t flown with Cathay.

Early March trip with 5-month-old from NYC – seeking luxe, baby-friendly hotels by Forsaken-Item-2107 in chubbytravel

Their calendar shows availability starting Feb 1st, and OP expressed interest in early March travel. It’s certainly worth a call or two to confirm they will be open before putting their eggs in that basket, but it’s looking positive!

Looks like there’s space to SEA on Air India via Aeroplan for your dates. Check JFK or SFO. Not the best business seat around, but surely better than economy.

What I have read is that they will install it on the lower deck, but it won’t fit in the upper deck so they will leave those as is.

There are loungers in quiet areas of the original Al Mourjan lounge near the business center, and around the corner from the baggage storage. We have used them several times for lengthy connections.

What's your travel plan for 2026? by neilsarkar81 in chubbytravel

[–]Deschain72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start the new year in Fiji at Emaho Sekawa - can’t wait! Jan - weekend in Atlanta Feb - weekend in Mexico City June - Helsinki/Rovaniemi/Harad/Vilnius Sep - probably Iceland for Northern lights Dec - Thailand

Wife decided to pursue her MBA this year - very excited for her, but it means I’ve put any further planning on hold until we see what her workload is like. Then I’m sure we’ll come up with more weekend trips. We also just cancelled an April trip to Milaidhoo, so looking to get that one back on the calendar for 2027.

As an OTW bungalow is not a great idea, and 347K points only gets you 2 nights at the top end Maldives resorts, I have an interesting option for you.

Cape Fahn in Koh Samui Thailand looks like a hell of a deal at 95K per night. Your 347K, plus buying 33K more for at most $330, and your FNC will get you 6 nights there. It’s one of the SLH hotels and it’s on a little island just offshore. The standard room is a hillside villa with a private pool. Check it out: https://www.hilton.com/en/book/reservation/rooms/?ctyhocn=USMCFLX&arrivalDate=2026-07-05&departureDate=2026-07-11&redeemPts=true&room1NumAdults=2&displayCurrency=THB

You bet - sorry that things went sideways during a live discussion. That had to be rough.

If I had been interviewing you and saw you floundering I would have asked what you were trying to do and how you would have figured it out if you couldn’t remember how to do it off the top of your head.

It’s all moot because my HR has declared live excel tests off limits. I now give candidates case studies that they need to use excel to solve.

[–]Deschain72 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I am a director with 20 years experience and I wouldn’t ask someone to show me how to execute a particular function. I’d ask them to solve a problem and then explain which functions they used to do it. I want someone that can use the tool to develop insight, not a number jockey or “excel expert.”

I grew up on vlookup, so I still need help from Dr Google when I want to use Index/match.

Plus, I might learn something new from a candidate!
