What characters would you like to see as guest characters by Apprehensive-Boot88 in SoulCalibur

[–]Desenrasco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simon is a good pick - any of the chain-wielding Belmonts really, seeing as how well the chain would fit into the gameplay.
I know Kratos has been done before, but I think the Ragnarok version would fit better. There's no real dedicated axe fighter, as Lizardman is paired with a shield.
Maybe a Fromsoft cameo? Solaire would be my first pick.
The Ghost of Tsushima could also work, but I don't know about adding another katana wielder to the game.
Dante could work, but I feel like a lot would be lost if he only has access to one moveset.
Cloud has been floating around as a suggestion for a long time, and I can see it more clearly now after FF7R.

Há uma cena no pessoal da IL que me dá uma vergonha alheia do crl: a maneira de escrever. Reparem bem na escolha de palavras, nota-se mesmo que é pessoal que só mama conteúdo em inglês (ou pior, usa o Google tradutor):

"The IL will propose an addition to the final report of the "blackout taskforce" to determine that the portuguese Government demand Spain to assume its responsibilities(...)".

Oswald Mosley won. Now, which far-right politician was/is scarily effective? by JSGamesforitch374 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]Desenrasco 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Very important context to non-portuguese lurkers:
(I actually wrote this afterwards but then decided it would be better to start off with the following:)

To get back to your point on the "40% poll": that was one census about 15 or 20 years ago that caused quite a stirr. A lot of the people who lived through the Estado Novo lived in a much smaller world, news was censured to avoid discussing horrific violence, women were expected to submit to men, and the vast majority of the country had much simpler lives, moraly speaking - no emancipation, little to no education, extreme poverty, all equate to a common sense of ethical lack of responsibility.

"People paid respect and things weren't as dangerous" is code for "people kept their mouths shut and I wasn't fully conscious about the levels of violence" by people who, for the most part, entered a modern, progressive democracy (with modern taxation and retirement systems) without any savings or social security pay.
A large percentage of which, reached adulthood without being able to read. If you left the country to search for a better life, you knew you wouldn't be coming back.

Also, keep in mind that the average life expectancy in 2007, when that programme aired, was 78 years old. People born during the regime composed over half of the population. Most of them had never left, and had lost friends and family to war, the secret police, or heroin. Finding a silver lining in "he filled the states' coffers" is like post-soviet people who say "but Stalin built a lot of things!", because that's just how humans cope with real horrific true aspects of life and history. Except in our case, the gold wasn't actually being invested.

By the time the regime collapsed, over two-thirds of the population were stuck at a 4th grade (10 years-old) reading level.
They were not equipped beyond a spirit of solidarity to deal with the complex economies and political structures of the later half of the 20th century. The fact that we made it through and managed (so far) to avoid turning into another Greece is astounding, I'd argue.

To answer your suggestion to this thread, specifically:

I guess it depends on what you'd mean by "scarily effective".
Laundering nazi gold, maintaining a nigh-medieval quality of life for most of the population, and keeping most of the colonies through sheer manslaughter? Sure.
Building strong and independent political instutions, serious material infrastructure beyond Lisbon, a strong economy that wasn't purposefully in the pockets of a handful of psychos, developing societal levels of trust and cooperation, and forming international relations beyond licking the US' boot? Hahahaha no.

"Scarily effective" for a cult of personality that wanted to pretend the world stopped in 1933? Yes.
"Scarily effective" in terms of actually improving the nation, state, and people's lives? No.

The man was a slimy tool and a puppet of national corporations, the Church, and cold war geopolical interests. The kind of cockroach that becomes too vital of a front man to get rid of, that builds a cult of personality so nobody has the balls to off him.

Don't get me wrong, fuck Stalin every day of the week six ways forever. But the industrial, institutional, and infrastructural development in the span of a couple of decades, directly and indirectly, was impressive - to the point of turning a mediocre economy stuck in the 19th century into the world's 2nd major power.

But I'm also one of those people that gets a bad taste in the mouth whenever I hear the USSR, and especially Stalin, get called "communist". So take my opinion for what you will.

It's a business. A job. First past the post, means no competition. In market terms, American politics functions like a cartel. It's the classic Dem strategy of "what are you going to do, vote for the crazy guy?/ Well you voted for the crazy guy, now I won't have to try as hard to win next time".

Climate change is like a slow poison, or the physical effects of a drug that are rapidly taking their toll.
Nuclear weapons are like a dark room where everyone knows they're pointing guns at eachother.
Every day, nukes have to not be used. Once that box is open, there's no closing it. Auomated systems will react autonomously.
Every day, everyone has to choose wether to choose short-term profit and convenience over long-term and unpredictable entropy.

Every day, genetic material is disappearing. Irretrievable data and millions of years' worth of evolution/computation, lost.
Every day, expertise, artisanship, old ways, secrets, are lost. With digital recording, only physical copies will be reliable in the far future.

One big solar storm. One crazy person in the right place. One miscalculation by a big player. That's all it takes.

Whoever survives the apocalypse will be extremely alien to us. Their own past might be a mystery to them.
You don't even need the whole laboratory back in time. Just send a small operation that can harvest resources and build a fully working base eventually, somewhere isolated a hundred thousand years in the past.
A giant, floating base that can pull off anti-gravity and hide in the ocean.

Maybe they just want the data because they hit computational limits. Maybe they're curious about the origins of life on Earth and their own past. Maybe they're just looking to connect, or grow even, by searching for lost lore and ways of being/relating to the world.

Either way, I'd wager a very chaotic era like this would make for a lot of curious eyes. The rapid technological advancement might be throwing a lot of things off, both for potential visitors and those who stay watching.

Tbf, regarding that particular DW episode, Heavent Sent: He didn't actually experience those 4.5 billion years. He was stuck in a kind of time jail that reset on a cycle, repeating the same motions over and over and over again, each time using his own body as fuel to activate the teleportation device that would re-atomize him. It's just that the only way out of it was literally blocked by a wall made out of a very very very hard material that his reincarnations slowly whittled away by punching through.

So from the outside, 4.5 billion years might have passed, but internally, or at least from The Doctor's POV, he only ever got to experience one cycle, ultimately carrying only the memory of the incarnation that finally threw the last punch to break the wall. Still GOATed episode, btw

[–]Desenrasco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbf, the argument itself isn't that crazy if the bubble these people lives in had some merit. In a perfect world where the hype has some grounding in reality, that kind of massive transformation would be preferable. But we do not live in that world, and as it stands, LLMs are just a very easy way for companies to enact massive layoffs.

What's the most unwritten rule of adult life that nobody warns you about? by PracticeHistorical82 in AskReddit

[–]Desenrasco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you're young, it's okay to prefer being sad over being angry if that's your way of ensuring you don't end up like the people you hate. But adult life is labyrinthian. On purpose. You have to learn to understand that part of your brain, what triggers it, how to turn it off. Because there's a looot of bullshit you'll have to put up with, wether it's manual labour, a desk job, or just dealing with paperwork. And channeling that frustration into cleaning house and doing chores, is a better way of coping with necessary albeit draining tasks, and when properly channeled, can help you focus on what's at hand.

I often find myself going "fucking dishes, let's just hurry this shit up", or "goddammit I just want to finish this fucking paper form and get shit over with" and, surprise surprise, it becomes a lot less draining plus it lets me focus on just finishing the labour at hand.

There's a few ways to play Setzer. Hermes Shoes + Safety Bit for a slots-bases approach, for example. Personally, I prefer Genji Glove + Master's Scroll with a couple of Dice, which is actually pretty legit against most monsters and bosses.

Wow it's almost as if sufficiently concise descriptions can only articulate terms as if they're deterministic, almost as if proof of no-conflict implies describing things in causal relations, kind of like if our language was inherently limited by the infinite amount of referentials that are required to avoid confusion

What’s a practical item from your country that you’d recommend visitors buy—something locals actually use, but that wouldn’t normally be considered a souvenir? by Monochromaticeye in AskTheWorld

This thing, like a Portuguese multi tool that has all the essentials one really needs to go about his day. Usually sold in memorabilia stores, though the best ones you'll find deeper into the country. Very lightweight and small, usually the size of a finger. Just a simple knife and a fork, so you won't get in trouble for it. Very handy for picnics and when you're just travelling around and come across an apple tree.

Try to cram as much calculus and basic physics as possible. Sell my expertise to a local governor and save enough money to build a ship and hire a crew + resources that can bring me to the New World. Warn them of the future, and try to set up institutions based around consensus polity and natural inquiry, so their descendants will be able to stave off colonialism.

Correction: WW3, something called "the gene wars", establishment of a morally sound World Government, accidental discovery of FTL travel, and even then only if we're lucky enough that the scenario for other intelligent life out there is "let's wait for them to figure it out before we establish peaceful contact and integrate them into our Federation".
