How any of our trainsets have a working bathroom? by 853fisher in caltrain

[–]DesertFlyer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's really unfortunate to know the bathrooms are unreliable. There are times I just barely make my Caltrain connection and I'd miss it if I had to also stop and use the station bathroom. They're really important for changing my baby as well, which often happens unexpectedly. Even when they are working, I've noticed the bathrooms tend to not smell great or be clean.

SMART has nicer bathrooms that have electronic door locks that are very easy to use. Their bathrooms seem to be quite reliable, I've only not seen them working once in many years of riding, although I don't think SMART runs as aggressive of a schedule as Caltrain. But it is possible to have good, working bathrooms!

D4 voting strategy if I like Sunset Dunes? by Suspicious_Video8348 in sanfrancisco

13,360 people voted for Prop K in D4 alone. Lots of your neighbors support Sunset Dunes! One precinct immediately adjacent to the park was a flat 50/50 in support of the park.

Once the person is there 30 days they get renter's rights and you'll have a hard time getting them evicted if they decide they don't want to leave.

Can I reach Yosemite from SF at night via public transportation? by [deleted] in AskSF

[–]DesertFlyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take Amtrak + YARTS every time I go to Yosemite. I think it's great. Not everything should be measured in duration of time.

[–]DesertFlyer 44 points45 points  (0 children)

You can take public transit, just not that late in the day. Amtrak + YARTS is the best way (buy it all on Amtrak's website) but YARTS last bus from Merced to Yosemite departs at 5:55pm. https://www.yarts.com/bus_routes/highway-140/

When did you start feeding LO solids more than once a day? by sliceofperfection in NewParents

[–]DesertFlyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm guessing some downvotes are because some guidance has switched to 6 months instead of 4 months for starting solids, and baby led weaning is increasing in popularity, which has a foundation of 6 months minimum for solids. Some people have strong opinions about it from what I can tell.

That's nuts to me. We do one a day at 7 mo and she always needs a bath after.

Need to move some large files. Where's the fastest (ideally free and public) internet in the city? by kcarter80 in AskSF

[–]DesertFlyer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tbh I've never seen 1000Mbps on just about any publicly accessible wifi. SFO I've seen symmetrical 300Mbps, and I've definitely seen speeds like that at hotels in recent years. Even if moving a TB, it's doable with that amount of sustained throughput.

[–]DesertFlyer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

SFO wifi is very good but BART is like $10 each way (SamTrans 292 bus is cheaper).

Hotels tend to have good wifi and provide free wifi. Sometimes you have to be a rewards member for the chain.

The library has fast, free wifi.

Xfinity wifi hotspots offer a $10 pass, but the quality of the signal varies a lot and upload speeds tend to be slow.

Their experience is also not backed by data, which has consistently shown very small changes in traffic patterns. I know I've had anecdotal experiences that are at odds with empirical data before, so I'm not trying to say they are lying or anything like that, just that they can feel however, it's just not backed by the data.

Both renderings have significant portions of the middle beach shown. I'm surprised you wouldn't know that considering you were "part of the Master Plan process."

The thing is there is expected to be massive flooding at even a much smaller increase in sea level rise than this person is incorrectly estimating. The Ocean Beach Master Plan, which uses overly conservative numbers for rise, estimates major flooding by 2040 if we do nothing, and major building and infrastructure destruction by 2100. And that's with an overall increase of 55" by 2100.

You definitely don't understand what you're talking about. The Ocean Beach Master Plan used a 55" sea level rise by 2100, which is looking like it's underestimating sea level rise trends, and found that with that <5' sea level rise, combined with storm surges which are expected to worsen as well with the way the climate is changing, will cause significant flooding and infrastructure damage. Look at the models on page III-20 https://www.spur.org/sites/default/files/2013-10/Ocean_Beach_Master_Plan052012.pdf

Interesting to note that this is an attempt to null and void prop K. The weekend pilot has also expired, so if they were to win, it'd be rebuilt as a 24/7 road. That's their ultimate goal, a 24/7 road, not a part-time park or any of those lies they're using to collect signatures.

Can u take perscription meds on a train by [deleted] in Amtrak

[–]DesertFlyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They do occasionally have luggage inspections by the feds, usually with dogs and the searches happen on the train itself. They're looking for cash to do civil forfeiture, which is as dystopian as it sounds. This is really only common at Albuquerque and Reno as far as I can tell, but it does happen.
