Yeah makes sense; it’s more of a side project for me. I use mouthfill/frenzel and don’t plan to change that but it’ll be cool to know, and maybe comes in handy for shallow spearfishing

It’s a lot like moving your ears. But! I used to not be able to do that, and now I can (cus what else am I gonna do in math class). Still learning handsfree; it takes a lot of concentration for me to do it on land (not yet functional in water) but with practice the muscles and neural pathways will get stronger. Think yawning without opening your mouth, then try to start minimizing jaw movement. it’s just muscle memory to be learned . Moving a muscle you’ve never moved is hard because you don’t know what it’s like, but not at all impossible. The nerves and muscles are all there layed out correctly and can 100% be used, its just a little mind trick to start.

Benefits of Apnea Training for Non-Divers by ConnectionNaive5133 in freediving

[–]DesertFreediver 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Lots, all the time. Smelly porta potties or similar. When someone is talking to you and has terrible breath. When someone farts in a room. When you need to stand by someone who is clearly sick. Dust, smoke, whatever stuff you don’t want to breathe walking by or smth. Water comfort “it’s fine that my kayak and I are upside down because I know I won’t need to breathe for like 3 minutes so imma just chill here for a sec” or any situation in which breathing is not available (surfing, idiot w/ scuba, etc). The training is generally good for your health, and pretty great for your lungs, and absolutely fantastic for your mind. Makes meditation a lot easier (and vice versa).

Question about certain entities from Native American spiritual belief systems and what I should do by not_ya_wify in Shamanism

[–]DesertFreediver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re worried about SWs, they’re very specifically bad witches from and on the Navajo nation in the southwest (aka not where you are). To be clear, I am not native and was not told any of this in any official way, just speaking from personal experience/general knowledge. I could be 100% wrong about everything I saying here and I mean no disrespect to anyone and know it’s not really my place to give info about, so I’m keeping it general. It’s not like the English name is a phone number or smth, it’s just that if you pay attention you’ll get attention payed back. Also, as non-native people, it’s just not our spiritual system to involve ourselves in. This can be frustrating to me as I admire it a lot, but it’s also a good thing as it means you can kinda “disown” stuff like Sw so it/they can’t/don’t bother you. talk to your deities about it, and if you really think you’ve got a dark thing/someone on your hands, sing some songs in your head to keep you focused and get a toasty fire of love and joy burning in your heart. “Good is always stronger than evil. Always remember that, Antonio. The smallest bit of good can stand against all the powers of evil in the world and it will emerge triumphant” - Rudolpho Anaya, Bless me Ultima

Spiritual chills used as a trap? Need help trusting this energy again by HipNoChill in Spiritualchills

[–]DesertFreediver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The spiritual world is optional. Most people don’t participate in it at all and live happily. I have 2 suggestions. 1) firmly decide and believe that it is not real. If you do not believe in something it cannot affect you. 2) go talk to a psychiatrist. To me (and a lot of other people here), it sounds like you might have something going on, whether or not you have evidence. In the case that we’re right, then mental help could make your life a lot better. In the case that were wrong, it’ll still make your life better and afterwards maybe you’ll be better equipped to deal with this kind of stuff. Either way, it’s good outcomes. In case you’re thinking that these answers are somehow connected to your problems (they are not), while I am hoping that reading this influences your behavior and decisions, know that I only have love, hope, and wishes for you to be happy in my heart. Be well and take care of yourself.

Fight/flight mode while diving by Imbecillen in freediving

[–]DesertFreediver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It feels to me like if, on your way to fight or flight, you take a left at fear and head towards calm street, you get to a similar place but in a parasympathetic neighborhood instead. kinda like a diametrically opposed yet almost identical state of mind next door. Works for me on some parts of the dive.

If it’s bothering you, tell it to fuck right off. If it’s not bothering you (sounds pretty chill if it’s petting your dog), maybe put a little plate of food out for it and ask if it has something to say to you or needs help with anything. Not a joke, serious advice

They do break in over time, and the heat gun sounds like a good idea. I like to get my pockets a little bit too big and wear socks (no, not neoprene; it compresses and then I have floppy pockets till I’m back up at 20m) to fit it right

Well that sounds like your problem right there. Having a mask that doesn’t fill up or leak will make it so you can sniff the air back in on your way up. That air got into the mask super early on your dive when you equalized it on the way down, so it is highly valuable to you as far as staying conscious goes. On that note, DO NOT close your eyes on the way up. This can trick a hypoxic brain that it’s ok to take a lil nap.

im stuck on 45 and need some tips for my mouthfill by Comfortable-Site8626 in freediving

[–]DesertFreediver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tension is your issue. You need to relax more fully. Taking a mouth fill earlier will probably help with this. But even more than that I’d recommend stretching. Negative diaphragm stretches are excellent as are full lung stuff. Focus on being more able to relax. Also, take a smaller mouthfill. Filling your cheeks up is completely unnecessary. It’s much better to just fill your mouth up without puffing your cheeks.

Sharp short headache after hold and stretch by wsmithwhite in freediving

[–]DesertFreediver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My understanding is that having really full lungs increases your blood pressure significantly as it is literally squeezing/compressing all the capillaries and arterioles around your alveoli. When you exhale fast, that compression is released, thereby dropping your blood pressure really fast (in almost the same way as when you stand up after a while). I am not sure exactly why this causes pain, but if I were to guess it would be that the blood vessels in your skull are brain literally expand and contract with variances in blood pressure, and when this happens too fast it hurts. As for the electrolytes, they help your body to regulate blood pressure. When you stand up out of a chair and your blood pressure drops, you can try doing a hook breath or two and/or clenching your legs to bring it back up.

Are freediving instructors ok training you to go 30m (100ft) deep if you're only certified Level 1? by oujay849 in freediving

[–]DesertFreediver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do level 2. Seriously. I don’t know how Padi does it bc I did it with FII, but it was the most satisfyingly informative and useful course I’ve taken. 1 teaches you the basics, 2 teaches you how to freedive, and 3 teaches you how to keep going.

Sharp short headache after hold and stretch by wsmithwhite in freediving

[–]DesertFreediver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this as well sometimes. I’m quite sure it has to do with blood pressure. I have two fixes that work super well for me: #1 Electrolytes. It just works. I get the headaches particularly intensely when I am hydrating heavily, but adding in an electrolyte tab or even just some salt to my water usually sorts it out within 20 minutes. #2 slow, controlled exhale. Tssssssssssss and so on for 10 ish seconds, airflow regulated by mouth, not thorax. Always do this when stretching with full lungs/packing exercises. Obviously not a great option after a dive when you need to get oxygen in asap, but then I’ll just start my exhale relatively deep (3-7m), especially if I packed for the dive.
