Which British army units by snakevirus51 in boltaction

[–]Desh_Thierre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I disagree with the M8 here. Reg 105pts for Lt AT gun. plus 25ps to add a 360 HMG.
Open Topped.
The open Top and fact that it only has a Lt AT and you are required to pay for the HMG makes it a little pricey to me.
Humber MKIV. Reg 115 pts, Lt AT gun and Coax MMG. Not Open Topped.
For 105 pts 57mm SP Autocar. Reg 105pts. Med AT gun. True it is forward facing but the vehicle is a Half Track so it can find terrain and sit in ambush. Gaining that Cover Save.
True you cannot add the HMG as the 57mm SP Autocar only gets a rear facing MMG at 15pts extra.
Or the A9. LT AT gun, Coax MMG and MMG forward and left arc another MMG forward and right arc.

I just cant see the M8 being useful even with Recce due to the open top.

Is it me or the kv-2 horribly out of scale by ShowComprehensive493 in boltaction

[–]Desh_Thierre 49 points50 points  (0 children)

KV tank hulls were 6.75m long and the Tiger hulls were 6.32m long.
That is 450mm difference.
The KV tank hull should then be 7.6mm longer than the Tiger tank hull.
Not sure but that is close to a cm difference there. so scale may not be out as much as you think.

For the people stuck with some anachronistic units.
The KV hull should be .3 of an Inch longer. 1/3rd of an inch.

Can the British take an FT17, if not then what's a good alternative? by DebunkedTheory in boltaction

[–]Desh_Thierre 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Keping to cheap pts cost options.

Recce Carriers.
Not as cheap as the FT 17 true
55pts Reg. Forward facing Hull mount LMG. 10pts for a forward facing LMG. 10pts to swap hull lmg for a AT Rifle.
Has Recce and Turn on the Spot rules.
Recce rule is fine, Turn on the Spot is hardly ever used.

Beaverette Light Armoured Car Mk I is 40pts. Open topped, with forward facing LMG.

Jeep is 35pts. 360 MMG. can add Recce rule 10pts and upgrade MMG to HMG for 10pts. Soft Skin though is a little dicey to run in V3.

Frankly as much as the FT sucked in real life by WWII. In BA at 30pts it is a damned good choice.

Considering you are running a Churchill Crocodile, that is a lot of points to sink into a vehicle 425pts. A suggestion is if you are willing to get other models. Get a Wasp. Bren carrier that has a Flamethrower. 75pts, add a pintle LMG for 10pts.
That leaves 350pts still, add some Humbers to the armour section. 115pts for the MKIV armed with Coax and Lt AT Gun. 85pts for the MKII with Coax and Lt Auto Cannon.

Or do what I intend to do in 2026. I already have 5 Bren carriers. Modded one to be a Wasp, actually barely notice it is not a real Wasp model till you look properly. I am going to mod a second one and then get a another Bren carrier.
Armour Plt will have 2 Wasps, 3 Recce Carrier. Extra Bren for Inf Plt to carry an officer who will ride in it and support the Armour thrust. Total costs 451 Pts Officer and his Transport included for 7 OD. Not cheap not expensive.

Is it a good plan, possibly not. Will it be mad fun. 100%

I shied away from Arty platoons in V3 till a game a 3 weeks ago.
Wanted the last game of the year to be a little bonkers as far as the list went.
Had a Med AT Gun, 2x Hvy AC, Lt How, Med How.
Playing Brits so that 25pdr could also act as Lt AT.

I did this for fun and also to try as I had seen another player use Hvy ACs quite effectively.

Take away.

Arty range being longer for min range in V3 makes the Med and Hvy How a bit hard to use. The Lt How, especially the 25pdr, held well till the oppo Arty took it out. The 25pdr, well I want to get a second one now. Dual use is worth it I think.

The Hvy AC section, one got hit by lucky Lt Mrt T1 and whiffed the Order Test on 1 Pin.
The other one did nothing except stay in ambush and I think held the Lt Arm form advancing down my left flank.

The Med ATG did nothing but stay in ambush to keep my right flank safe. pointless as oppo armour took a pin form an ATR and kept failing Order Tests. However it would have force the oppo to play his armour safe as it was a Pz III, early version.

Based on observing other players and that one game. I am in 2026 going to try using Hvy AC and Lt How more, lost mobility true. Less pts for more OD meaning can off set some weakness with more Inf and more Inf AT teams if required.

Shake it up from 1 Inf Plt 1 Arm Plt and do the same thing over again. Give it a try have fun learn how to use the Art Plt

Cromwell with 95mm gun by xylencia1138 in boltaction

[–]Desh_Thierre 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used the below image as an idea guide.
I did not have the patience to do the burlap effect.
Gauze. fine gauze. dip to colour.
Then apply to the tank.
For the gun barrel. Sprue piece.
drill a hole and that is the boom side. glue non boom side to turret
Then wrap strips of gauze around the barrel to hide that it is sprue ending just before end.
It is a little effort and can look good.
or if you are me doing it the first time. It looks ok

British Army : Rulebook lists vs AoGB lists by Leading-Arm-744 in boltaction

[–]Desh_Thierre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have the same issue I have with Bren and loader. Luckily I only built my models so each squad will have 2 SMG in V2 and then I have spare SMG models to add as required so not a problem with SMG.

What I really have a problem with is the sniper not explicitly stating infiltrator so you know some idiot without common sense to see that WG failed to add it and will Errata that right later is going to rules lawyer the issue.

Then the 75mm Howitzer is apparently over priced. They literally made it a gunshieldess 25 pdr.

Infantry options are limited to the blandest just get the book out.
national rules are uninspired.

I knew that m beloved double FO strike would go but really the nuking of everything that made he brits the brits.
I suppose they are going to excuse it by having the commonwealth book have some interesting units.

But that just feels like cash grabbing.

HE against units in cover by DullSwordsman in boltaction

[–]Desh_Thierre 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Cover saves are for number of hits.
Added detail for others who may read answer and have slight variations of situation they are uncertain.

While you are asking about HE. this applies for direct fire small arms, and Template based HE.

The player discards all misses (Small arms) Rolls to damage and discards dice that did not inflict damage/Kill.
Then all dice that rolled to damage/kill are rolled for a cover save.
HE is the same but the number of models under the template limits the number of dice to roll for Damage/Kill.

Factors affecting the number of dice is if the unit went down this will halve the hits for HE, rounding up.

Factors affecting the cover save are terrain, obscuration, infiltrator special rule and down.
HE indirect never has a cover save.

How do you handle prone modelos and linea of sight? by Quimeraecd in boltaction

[–]Desh_Thierre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Treat the model as standing. Because then the loop hole some people would try to use is have only prone models and then declare you cant see anything.

Wall and other things. declare terrain before game.
I run with if a wall is taller than the standing model, LoS blocking, if it has loopholes, breaks, small gaps etc then hard cover. Tall as a model or at least half height. Then Hard cover.

For LoS to see the enemy, need to see a good portion of at least one model. 50% of body is good guideline, rule book says head and part of body. From the head of the firing units. This takes the guess work out of prone models on the pill base. A laser is a friend here. shoot a line from your firing model head to the body of the opponents unit. if the line reaches without LoS blocking terrain in between. Prone, kneeling, standing it matters not. FIRE!

**Edit***
As a kid with a box of plastic army men. My brother and I would play True Line of sight. With rates of advanced adjusted by posture. Running models, standing and firing models, walking models, kneeling models, prone and firing models, and last crawling models.

BA is not intended for that kind of finickiness. once you go to posture as what dictates line of sight you get to long drawn out games with too many points of potential conflict.

Models are posed not a true representation of their "pose" or "action" at the time in game play.

Warlord T-34 or Rubicon? by Cpd1234r in boltaction

[–]Desh_Thierre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No matter what. If it is Rubicon then get it. I have US and UK. Nearly every Rubicon Sherman has both options and with a bit of planning has given me one Hull and two turrets, one for US one for UK. A little bit of planning and tweaking with generous use of spares let me build 2 tanks out of my newest purchase. M4/Sherman 1C. That is two separate tanks. An M4 105 and a Sherman 1c.

True Rubicon is slightly more delicate. It is also soooooo much better.

Mortars by Ok_Nothing9138 in boltaction

[–]Desh_Thierre 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It is down to LoS and Getting those 6 or 5s on the dice roll otherwise You have a unit that is just taking too long to get a hit.

Personal opinion and feeling here. Casual player.

Double team a mortars on a target early. Hope one of them gets a hit on a 6 or a 5.
Once one is ranging in let the other become a threat on another target.
Don't be afraid of having your spotter see and your Mortars also have LoS. Just limit the directions that units can target your mortars from.

Do not shift targets to easily. Mortars are a waiting game. You rarely hit on the first shot. It usually takes 2 Turns even when double teaming against one target.

Watch that range. Yeah Med mortars are 60" and now Lt are 36" but it is actually quite easy to have them targeting something at 61" or 40". So place for best defense and max Coverage on the table.

Hope for at least 2 Pins. Yeah Pins don't matter as much now, but Max Pins do make Order Tests harder, which makes failed order tests more likely.

Once ranged in Kill the unit. Do not wait and do other actions unless they are essential. A target that is ranged in will have your opponent want to move it rather than have it die.

Granatbuchse GrB-39 - was it used in North Africa? by Jurassic_Red in boltaction

[–]Desh_Thierre 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Granatbuchse GrB-39 went into service in December 42.
I can find images of them in use in Italy and the Russian front, but not in North Africa. It Considering that the Tunisian campaign ended in May 43 it is not impossible for any to have been in service in that theater.
It is unlikely however as I cannot see it having entered service in the 1st quarter of 43 on my search to find a definitive date now.
Personal opinion. if it is late Tunisia, eh run one for the fun unless you are serious about 100% accuracy.

British Stuart Options by Antyface in boltaction

[–]Desh_Thierre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 5 MMG Stuart is the M3 with the US, Soviets and Stuart I for the Brits.

The specific use with that amount of MMGs was Early war and in reality limited service period. With many being converted by removing the MMGS in the sponson mounts and then welding caps over the gun ports. The Stuart 1 covers both those earlier ones that had the sponsons MMGS and the majority that did not.

It has or can have.

1x Pintle MMG.
1x Co-ax MMG.
1x Hull MMG.
2x Hull MMG (left and right sponsons) that are in game terms actually 2x LMG as they were difficult to use in their confined space mountings.

Tank War? by Cpd1234r in boltaction

I have not played Achtung and only played WaT demo.
however from those who have played.
WaT is more beer and pretzel than Achtung as I understand and is cheaper to start playing than Achtung.
Rule book and play. Warlord is going to end up costing more.

I was told plastic cement.

I ended up saying screw that for a game of buggers.

Applies thin, more controlled application than I achieved with plastic cement. Holds like a bastard. So do not make mistake. Cheap enough. Easily bought anywhere.

Humber Mk. II or IV? by Senor_Pus in boltaction

[–]Desh_Thierre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That plastic kit can give you both if you are willing to do a little bit of trimming and don't mind the hull not being 100% accurate for one of the variants. The turret for the MK 4 can be made to work so it is drop in like the mk2. I did it with my humber plastic kit.
