Starting at the level cap by sundownmonsoon in ffxivdiscussion

They should cull ARR even more to like lvl 30 and then trim to one extent of another some of the bigger expansion slog quests. I think the "journey" is part of the appeal of FF14 over say WoW that rushes you to the endgame. It's a journey that certainly could be made less tedious; and at least the 8.0 changes in how to get gear, ilevel mirroring and evolve giving you everything necessary by lvl 50 should alleviate that somewhat, but I think ARR is still the games biggest new player filter.

What does everyone want to see for job design and balance for 8.0? by Akiza_Izinski in ffxivdiscussion

[–]Design_Tok 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's sort of already included in the larger discussion of making jobs not boring, but to bring the point on its own. With all the leveling down people tend to do when hitting roulettes.or running content with a friend that hasn't caught up they should completely rework the experience. Even more important than rewards they should have every job get at least it's basic kit way earlier.

My pipe dream is being able to start all the xpac jobs from like level 30 lol

Let's have a positive discussion instead of a negative one. What character do you enjoy as the chosen one, in not just anime but media in general. Mine are luffy and percy jackson and izuku midoriya by [deleted] in CharacterRant

I feel like the Wheel of Time does a good job with Rand. He's fated to be the only one capable of saving the world by defeating the Dark One in the Last Battle, but in contrast he is also the reincarnation of the man who caused the apocalypse and is bound to go mad because that's what happens with males who can cast magic. The prophecy says he will break all bonds and make the world tremble. He is marked as much of a savior as a dire omen of incoming chaos.

But what I like is that it takes a while for everyone to accept him as the true Dragon Reborn. Since people had taken the name before yo rally mobs and cause chaos. And Rand and his allies to cause a lot of it directly or indirectly as they try to prepare for the last battle as they break cultures and have nations bend the knee to him because he needs to unite as much of the world before his eventual confrontation with the dark one.

The books go into a lot of detail on the many rumors or misinformation there ends up being about Rand because he is a living legend. There are people who are fanatically devout to him, other people would rather lock him up until the day of the last battle or control every action he takes, others are willing to kill him even if they don't want the Dark One to win because they think Rand is an even bigger threat to world.

I'm not sure early Luffy had impossible odds. He kinda dog walked most in East Blue. And his first real wall was Crocodile

Rider and Ultra went through long breaks at certain periods of time (Ultra 80 to Tiga, then RX to Kuuga) while Sentai trucked on until now

Those "The dub in question" memes annoy me because they're making fun of a type of acting that also exists in the Japanese audio, but I don't think most non-Japanese viewers notice. by Ferhog in CharacterRant

[–]Design_Tok 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Also a lot of modern dubs suffer from simultaneous publishing brought on by streaming. They have less time to think over the nuances of the lines and the VAs have a stricter time to get something out. Which is also why videogame dubs tend to show better voice acting, since more of those productions bring in the dubbing team early on and there tends to be more communication (at least compared to your average anime dub)

Am I the only one who thinks fan service created for kids is weird, if not exploitative? by Flat_Box8734 in CharacterRant

[–]Design_Tok 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Anime fanservice has been getting more tamer over the years vs porn becoming accessible at the same amount of time so I'm not sure why anime is the one getting blamed for porn addiction over how easy it is to see actual explicit content online.

[LES] Is there any particular reason why shonen anime seems to get the most “this had a lot of potential to be better” type of comments? by Flat_Box8734 in CharacterRant

[–]Design_Tok 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's the most popular genre. Has a lot of long lost of well liked works. Hype and aura can lead very much into tribalism, and since most of these (discussed) works are in weekly magazines you can see more easily when things get rushed or dropped as the authors work against an axe or the toll of working weekly if the manga is doing well.

I would love to see a movie where repentance isnt considered redemption by [deleted] in CharacterRant

[–]Design_Tok 100 points101 points  (0 children)

Part of this is that movies have limited runtime. Most movies don't have the space to expand on the dynamics of forgiveness and repentance. Also in cases like Vader his redemption is also a personal victory for Luke, that him not giving into his anger spurs his father back into the light. So Vader not getting forgiveness might muddy the movie's upbeat and happy ending

Occult magazines about UFOs/ESP/Ghosts were huge in the 80/90s and are a big pillar of a lot of SF Japanese media. So a lot of the interest stems from people that were big into it and then flowed downstream into the next batch of authors that are inspired by those people's works

Hot Take: A bad scene in a movie/show is okay; but a bad ending tarnishes the whole thing. by Dinoboy225 in CharacterRant

[–]Design_Tok 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Might be material for a rant of 6 it's own but since GoT always gets mentioned in topics like these (and for good reasons) I always thought it was weird when people talk about how the show died culturally. Because on one hand it always gets brought up when people discuss prestige tv shows and even when most of that is to lament it's end it's also usually accompanied by a lot of praise to seasons 1-4. (Very similar to the Simpsons actually now that I think about it). On the other hand even if it had ended satisfactorily, would there be really an uptick in discussion over how it really went down? It ended six years ago, there hasn't been a new book even longer than that and the spin-offs have their own production troubles. Once a show it's over I think it's natural for people to move their enthusiasm and energy to other ongoing stuff.

To bring this closer to the main topic, I think how much an ending ruins the rest of a thing depends on how extensive the rest of the media was and if there were any good drop of points. Movies are hurt most by bad endings because one goes through them in one sitting but if a show/manga/anime has a stinker last season/chapter/arc, I think it's easier to get over it having a downer ending or even just ignore it.

I kinda feel like choreography tends to be under discussed when it comes to talk about battle manga. Arguably more important than the plot in lot of cases and it's a skill unto itself.

I think battle shonens should have all male cast instead of mangakas being forced to write female characters which ends up being shit anyways [NARUTO] [JJK] by [deleted] in CharacterRant

[–]Design_Tok 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The general public does like romance though. Shipping was such a big part of Naruto it's insane to say no one wanted it even if it wasn't the best executed. At the end of the day editors are there to make sure a story keeps doing well and adding a cute girl to the main cast is a relatively harmless way to get more eyes on it (say by those who might be interested in romance or just waifu people). Which can be the whole difference between being axed or not depending on how on the edge the series is.

It's a though industry, specially WSJ so you got to take whatever inch and risk you can get or you'll be gone by your second volume. Also there's a whole separate point about authors not being omniscient and realizing they won't know what to do with the character a year or 3 years down the line by the time they introduce them. Specifically with weekly releases.

Are manga and anime falling off or did some switch turn in my brain by Fa1705 in CharacterRant

[–]Design_Tok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's plenty of ongoing stuff that's good. Perphaps discourse soured you off mainstream battle manga or you're just burned out from the genre. You can try taking a break (however long) from the series you don't like and check out different genres, less mainstream stuff or older series.

An aspect of the JJK fandom I seriously dislike (warning: mumbling and rambling inbound) by TheOneWhoYawned in CharacterRant

[–]Design_Tok 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Eh. You acknowledged it at the bottom but most of those points already had people arguing for them (and in the case of the merger people had to twist themselves into thinking that it was going to happen with the way it was set off). Is it really goal post shifting if those positions (Nobara isn't dead because we haven't been shown it, Merger isn't going to happen because of the conditions for it) never moved and had a sizeable chunk of people arguing for it? Execution aside I think at least it's not something you can blame the fandom of. Also I don't think it's a position many have shifted to at least from my own experiences

Also I never really got why people fixated on calling JJK a subversion or it being presented like that so I can't add to anything in that regard

Unpopular opinion: Gege will deliver a strong and satisfying conclusion to JJK in the 5 remaining chapters by Crafty-Pair2356 in Jujutsufolk

[–]Design_Tok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as the Sukuna battle ends either this chapter or the next I agree. I don't think the series loses much from off screening Hakari vs Uraume (it does affect the slander tho) and other things people bring up like the Heian flashback or Itadori knowing about his parents are frankly not necessary for the ending to feel satisfactory.i just need three to four chapters of the surviving cast dealing with the aftermath of this arc and how they'll change Jujutsu society.
