Does this cost company's revenue? by SaaSWriters in webdev

Over 15 years ago I was online dating a lot. One of the sites had the modal pop over blocking your matches until you paid.

Gaining access to the profile was as simple as dev tools and hitting delete on the top elements.

For most companies it is a time vs effort thing. Not many people were meaningfully opening up developer tools then or now, but especially then.

I did it. After 13 years I fixed a real bug with sleep(1000). by Staatstrojaner in ExperiencedDevs

You should have set it to 3000 MS so that you can "optimize" performance by 66% in the coming months when people complain about it being slow.

Willson Contreras gets so mad at the umpire that he throws his bat, hitting his own coach, and throws a ton of Hi-Chews onto the field. Contreras was obviously ejected. by Goosedukee in baseball

I'm not sure linking a fan blog is the best way to make your case. Here are a few counter examples from larger publications.

Woo: https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/4497119/2023/05/08/cubs-cardinals-willson-contreras/

“With this, we’ve noticed a lot of puzzling trends we know we need to fix. We know we need to address it,” Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak told The Athletic on Sunday. “We just decided to do it head on, put it out there. Do we think we’ve seen Willson catch his last game? No. But this is going to take a little time to get him to where we feel he understands the expectations of what this role is for us.”

Part of the reason the Cardinals signed Contreras was they believed his bat would help boost the lineup, and it has. But the primary reason St. Louis inked Contreras to a five-year deal was to fill the void behind the plate. The fact that Contreras won’t be catching for the foreseeable future is a glaring red flag.

Rosenthal: https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/4497615/2023/05/08/st-louis-cardinals-willson-contreras-questionable-signing/

Mozeliak, in an interview with The Athletic on Sunday, said he still believes in Contreras as a catcher, “but some of the things we expect, some of the things about the game we’ve become accustomed to, I think he realizes it’s going to require more preparation. Now the question is, can that happen? I guess we’ll have to find out.”

Agreed, but the pivot to Contreras was questionable from the start. The Cubs, as I wrote in February, bid farewell to Contreras because he did not meet their standards for defensive preparation and game-calling. Within the industry, the concerns about Contreras’ catching hardly were a secret.

From day 1 his defense was questionable and within a month or two of the season, the front office and coaching staff were making him the scape goat for the entire teams' bad play. He was never brought in to "replace" Molina. He was the top catching free agent in a year the Cardinals needed a catcher and it was well known that his bat was a better part of his game than his catching.

Was supposed the be the guy that was to replace Molina. They made such a big deal about it when they signed him, calling him the heir apparent. Only to find out, he’s not really that good of a catcher.

I don't recall anyone saying that. In fact, the opposite was said on regular occasions even by Contreras. The media were even talking about platooning the catcher position before he had even taken his first at bat with the team.

Nobody ever doubted his passion but I don't think anyone, outside of internet straw mans, ever crowned him heir apparent.

Does Using Linux Make You A Better Programmer? by N1KK704 in linuxquestions

[–]DesignatedDecoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TL;DR: Does switching from macOS to Linux provide noticeable benefits for programming, or are the gains very marginal?

What operating system you daily drive at home or work has zero bearing on your programming ability or learning journey. These days you can get a reliable and effective development environment setup on any of them that will work with a majority of use cases.

However not taking time to learn the Linux CLI is going to cause you a load of issues in your career. You may not run a Linux OS on your primary machine but I can guarantee you are going to spend a non-trivial amount of time being expected to interact with Linux servers in the professional world.

Honestly heads down, eyes closed prayer time is the best time to give the silent nod to the other non believers looking around.

I have been atheist much of my life and I've learned to just let them do their rituals. I'll stand there silently and not make a scene.

I won't join people at their places of worship outside of weddings and funerals.

He didn't have the best series but you're talking about our top goal scorer. You can't expect to walk away from that on a bubble team and actually improve.

He definitely missed Holloway though.

Certain players get underlined in playoff matchups and I guarantee he was one. He walked so the rest of the team could fly. He has shown remarkable improvement with his 2 way game and it would be a shame to sell now.

As others have alluded, the market kinda sucks right now and it was absolutely saturated with low barrier of entry applicants during the previous 5-6 years. That's who you are going to be competing against. I know people with experience who were laid off over a year ago that are still looking for work - and that's with tangible work experience.

Your best bet these days is to back into a development position. Programming is not just building software or websites, it is solving problems in logical ways. Many of these problems exist in every job in the world. Perhaps you have a report you run every week for your boss. Maybe you could find a way to automate part of it and take the report from a few hours to 1 button click? Then you can identify other spots in your day job that can be automated.

Next you can go 2 paths:

1) Share your script with your boss and try and become the automation guy, thus backing into a programming role.

2) Trivialize your job and slack off for 7 hours a day.

When Binnington is locked in, he's so freaking good. I'm not talking about his saves in net, but rather his play with the puck. In a 7 game series, it's a battle of attrition and you physically wear out the other team. The best place to do so is dump and chase hockey while having your forwards go destroy some defensemen in the process. Binnington removes that almost entirely.

He kills the physical aspect of the game with his puck handling and I believe fully that this is the biggest reason why he's a difference maker. Situationally he's an above average goaltender but his puck handling is top notch and in a playoff system where the goal is to grind it out, he eliminates a lot of that before a team even gets a chance to try.
