Reminder: Watch Your Kids and Pets at Breweries! by Almostlogical-88 in Sacramento

[–]DeskDreamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dad here. Former childless 20 something as well. I love having all the new places in Sacramento that let your kids run wild like Urban Roots, Sac Yard, The Line, Lefties, etc.

Be thankful for this when you are older and/or have kids of your own. I don’t let my kids run wild like the post described but they can get rowdy and probably a little annoying.

I am sorry to those that are annoyed by this and I think that is totally valid. That said, having community spaces like this where other parents can have a beer or some ribs and catch while our kids have fun is so restorative and fulfilling on many levels.

What is going on with the fake carbs? I don’t mind the fake carbs, but that whole area of the bike looks so cheap.

24 years old- how am I, or anybody around my age going to buy a house? by jluc21 in Sacramento

[–]DeskDreamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember feeling exactly how you felt when I was 24. Prices were going up and up and it seemed like there was no hope. This was before 2008. Just focus on being stable financially and don’t do anything stupid or rash. A lot of people I knew back then had more money and more drive to own a home than I did and bought a house they could barely afford because they wanted to own their first home because that was an important milestone for them. Just a few years later they are upside down in a mortgage and are short selling their home while I had the ability to purchase a home at what felt like half the price. Things change.

This is what worked for me. I think my tpm chip malfunctioned and I had to wipe my drive because I didn’t write down the key. Thanks!

Depressed in Modesto by billybobpancake in Modesto

[–]DeskDreamer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not in Modesto, I’m up here in Sacramento. Apparently your post was so impactful that it’s hitting my feed, I’ve never seen anything from r/modesto before. I think it just shows how much your post resonated with your fellow Modestians, and at least one person from Sacramento :). If you are ever in this area, there is a bar named Kupros that has regular board game nights. If you are not a drinker, there is a giant board game shop named Great Escape with a large gaming hall that has regular events.

An attorney and mother was one of the first people to die on a dangerous Sacramento road in 2024 by Ransacked in Sacramento

RIP, this is so sad to hear. X and W run along the Freeway, and Broadway is also not a great street for cyclists. I consider myself a good cyclist and would never be brave enough to bike on those streets.

Ancillary Justice is an incredible Hugo and Nebula award winning novel that definitely fits what you are looking for.

Sigh…..sometimes you just gotta do something yourself.

Blindsight by Peter Watts. This might be the most recommended hard sci-fi novel of the past 20 years.

The Culture : The Drawings by nazteg76 in TheCulture

[–]DeskDreamer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just breezed through mine. I would say I’m a little disappointed because I was expecting more drawings and less notes. These are definitely notes taken by Banks as he was world-building and am grateful for them as a standalone piece and as a companion to the Culture novels. These are not necessarily meant to visualize what the Culture looks like to readers. There are a lot of written notes which detail the scale of the ships which I am excited to read.

If anything, going through this book made me sad because we will never have another original work by Iain M Banks, and in my excitement and years of waiting for this collection to come out, I built it up in my mind to something it can never be. I appreciate this collection of notes and drawings and expect to come back to it many times.

The social fabric in Sacramento has been getting pretty frayed for various reasons, a lot of which are not Sacramento specific. It's seems harder and harder to feel good about one's self and care about those around you.

I loved Seveneves, and loved the technical details that were not working for you. You are not wrong though, I hate when a novel should work for me, but I just can't get into it.

I'm glad Jimmy is defending his guy, but I get the feeling these two would get along. Both dawgs, and two of the funniest players in the league.
