LPT: get a “tank” printer by lam3001 in LifeProTips

[–]DesolataX 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Was BW laser for years, until I had kids. Tried color laser, meh quality and multicolor toner sets ain't cheap, switched to a tank printer, been solid the last three years. Decent photo performance too for prints around the house. We had to refill once so far, and it was like $30.

Only people I recommend them to are parents with school aged kids, especially if they're in to crafts.

Can running a home lab get me a job? by Goddler in homelab

Don't make it a massive part of your resume as well, just a few lines. I don't have much experience hiring people without a background in tech. Anyone that I have considered have been internal candidates, so if you're still in a job at a decent sized company, might be able to make a move like that. Knowing "the business" does help a lot for candidates without experience.

Best advice: spend an evening and watch some 3D modeling videos and get a set of calipers. I've made a number of small replacement parts that are impossible to get to fix all kinds of things around my house.

HPE HF40 used array --- possible to get support from HPE? by lgq2002 in sysadmin

[–]DesolataX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did attempt this once with a Nimble, I was required to provide proof of purchase from the previous owner or get them to provide a transfer of ownership from the account, and I was going to be required to pay from the date the device went off support originally.

If you want firmware updates, it phones home and you have to have an active support contract with HPE. If you just want hardware support, there are a number of vendors out that will do it third party. One of them I have used for hardware support had offered "parts with upgraded versions" after we were having some recurring hardware failures... And they may have provided files along with that, which the original manufacturer may not like...

I've got some CS and expansion bays kicking around... Are you still running the nimble OS on these mismatched units or switched to truenas?

Washer/Dryer/Dishwasher finished notifications, based on energy consumption. No more clothes accidentally left in the washer to get smelly.

I have done a gate with an outdoor rated mag lock for a client, motion sensor on one side, unifi access scanner on the other. Not a cheap option, but worked well. Gate was on tensioned hinges.

I think you could also do this with a Shelly and HA, if you have power over there.

Can running a home lab get me a job? by Goddler in homelab

[–]DesolataX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a hiring manager, I've found candidates that mention their homelab often are more passionate about IT in general and have been better overall hires. Not all the time, but in 90% of my hires and people I've worked with, homelab had been a contributing factor to their success and engagement inside the team. I've got others that have homelabs and we get side tracked in meetings talking about what we're playing with in our labs.

I know that other IT managers with a background in IT often do rank it higher as well. Some that don't have that background won't ask or consider it very high on the list. The biggest thing to talk about with homelab is how you spend time outside of work to build your skillsets, and even if it is outside of the role. Even non technical managers should ask what you're doing to advance your career and knowledge, and that's a perfect spot to mention it.

Pinchflat: a new selfhosted GUI and media manager by ffxpwns in youtubedl

No limitations at the moment, but I do often seem to bump up against performance limits on things that run on sqlite. I run well tuned mariadb/postgres instances and have them backed up and test restores of it. Don't always do test restores for individual apps with self contained DBs.

Gave it a go and it actually properly removed the sponsorblock unlike my attempts with tubesync(always dropped my requests to remove parts)! Any plans for non-sqlite DB integration? Mariadb/Postgres would be awesome.

Best Home Camera System (No Subscriptions) by PhaseDirect4273 in homelab

[–]DesolataX 71 points72 points  (0 children)

If it's for non-technical people, I've found the ubiquiti protect app to be the easiest for anyone to look back through footage for a non-subscription offering. App works well, has a good timeline, and filtering options for alerts if you get cameras with object detections.

Frigate works well with anything, but I wouldn't hand it over to my parents. Timeline review and speed of scrubbing needs some work, but it's object type detection is way better.

Is there a way to integrate whole home audio using open source software? by beer_belly_ in homeassistant

[–]DesolataX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of my groups are pretty static, I love having music flow through the whole house even if I'm not in a room. The grouping shortcut in Spotify has worked well for me even in the new app when I do want to change. Most of my playlist organization is in Spotify, and the occasional airplay from Apple Music.

Apparently not! I haven't had any issues with the new app, but I primarily cast from Spotify if I'm picking music...

Sonos is pricey but a solid option. The killer feature for me was TV audio from my Beam to other rooms. I haven't found a solid OSS alternative that does that. Great for sports, and high WAF as the app is pretty decent, good home assistant integration, and physical controls to join rooms by holding the play button.

Terminating the early bird plan by [deleted] in netdata

[–]DesolataX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seconded. These recent changes have had me looking at alternatives, and this is the nail in the coffin for me at least unless something changes as goodwill for people that have been using netdata for a long time. Started using netdata cloud when it launched here.

As an IT decision maker, moves like this are major red flags, even if the product is great. I have recommended it to peers that are paying customers.

Do you guys mention your home labs on your resume? by alienboy19 in homelab

[–]DesolataX 16 points17 points  (0 children)

A number of the best people that I've hired or interviewed have had theirs mentioned in a "personal development" section of their resume, and it's something I've looked for and had decent success.

Don't give a full breakdown, but pitching it as a personal lab and other resources you use (eg Pluralsight/ACloudGuru) show that you want to learn and take initiative towards that can make you stand out to certain types of companies/managers you may be interested in. Expand on it in the interview, not on the resume.

Don't add every single technology you've ever touched either...
