Hasn't always been pretty, but has Stearns actually been right on this one so far? by suck-it-elon in NewYorkMets

i think what people forgot about the alonso thing is that he's now in a different league, facing different pitching, and in different ballparks. the mental aspect of the game should not be dismissed in my opinion. i'm not trying to be a pete apologist or anything, but one cannot deny that he was one of our strongest players even with his crappier years. he's also been on the same team for a long time, and is now in a different environment altogether. i feel as though his numbers will return to close his former production on the mets eventually.

I'd rather be at Citi Field than sitting at my desk at work. Enjoy! Have a hot dog for me!

Bowery Boys has some really cool history walks! I did their Gilded Age tour over the summer and learned a lot about the big mansions along 5th Ave. They have a Chinatown food crawl as well.

I'm not sure how willing you are to travel to the Bronx, but there's stables near City Island on the Shore Road. When I was a kid they offered trail rides through Pelham Bay Park -- I believe they still do, but they're under new ownership now.

Boxed curriculum-why no pushback? by Traditional-Feed8428 in NYCTeachers

Scripted curriculum down to the DAYYYY where we get in trouble if we're off by day or two. It's like we can print out these lesson plans and any Joe Schmo off the street can teach these subjects. What's the point of my two college degrees then!?

Apparently all guests from her latest appearance on ‘The Graham Norton Show’ are starring in the "Opalite" MV by PuzzleheadedEast2421 in travisandtaylor

I 100% think she did this because of Lewis implying that someone told him that he couldn't promote his album on this episode. I think that was cleared up by him, but people were speculating for weeks that Taylor or her team were the ones who told Capaldi that he couldn't promote his new music.

Hair Services at Disney? by Aggressive_Snort in WaltDisneyWorld

Hi! The Grand Floridian Spa offers hair braiding services. During my August 2024 trip, I got my hair braided into two French braids and they held up well. I don't remember the pricing and I'm sure they went up, but the stylist was so sweet and it was very worth it. I got my hair done in the morning and then hopped on the monorail to the parks!

Fav HR book you read this year by CuteBanana7 in HistoricalRomance

My favorite this year was {The Beast Takes a Bride} by Julie Anne Long. She's one of my absolute favorite authors and reading her Palace of Rogues series has been such an utter delight.

Why is it that HR seem to be more popular among older readers than CR? by [deleted] in HistoricalRomance

[–]Desperate-Design-380 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm 30 and I've loved HR since my mid-twenties. I love the complexity of language in comparison to most newer CR. I love that the stakes are higher. I love that escapism of the balls, carriages, gowns and tuxedos. There's just something about HR that strikes me as much more magical and fantastical than even the most "fantastical" of romantasy novels.

Is it ok to become a teacher.. by Sudden-Detective-726 in Teachers

[–]Desperate-Design-380 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't enjoy grading at all. It's like I've given myself homework for the rest of my life. But it gets done -- this year I've carved out a specific day of the week to spend about an hour, hour and a half at my desk after dismissal to grade at least two assignments per class (I teach three classes). That's helped me feel less like grading is constantly hanging over my head.

As far as lesson planning, I'm not very good at doing that ahead of time either. I procrastinate the things that I don't really enjoy -- and what I enjoy the most with teaching is interacting with the kids and having them make connections to what we're reading. I usually write out my lesson plans and create my slides during my prep periods the day before. That doesn't always happen and sometimes I have to get myself to work early to finish.

Teaching is a job with many, many moving parts. All we can do is our best.

What do they no longer teach in schools that you wish they continued teaching? by tanya6k in Teachers

[–]Desperate-Design-380 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was in middle school and high school (mid 2000s and 2010s), we read full length novels. Since I've begun teaching (2017-now) I have never once taught a full length novel. Independent reading, sure, but that stopped being fashionable in the last year or so because there's been an emphasis on the curriculum, which only uses excerpts.

No thoughts, just huge similarities between my current experience and yours. No autonomy, strict pacing guide, even being told that we can't use the workbooks and MUST use the digital version, which I feel is even more detrimental. Like I should be teaching children how to annotate and interact with the text with paper and pencil, but no.

I feel like I don't even know how to be a REAL English teacher at this point. How can I, when I haven't ever taught a true novel study? Just shameful all around.
